KTLA 5 coverage of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake - Part III

At exactly 4:30:55 a.m. on Jan. 17, 1994, Los Angeles was rocked by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that caused catastrophic damage, particularly near the epicenter in the San Fernando Valley. 57 people lost their lives and property damage was estimated between $13 billion and $50 billion. This is an extended segment of KTLA 5’s live coverage from that day.

I lived in California for 20 years and had never experienced such a horrific earthquake. It was not a "shaking" quake, it was a jolting up and down quake that I thought would never end. The after shocks were no joke either.

Unfortunately, the guy’s mom at 11:00 was killed in the quake. Her name was Carol Runnings and she was 48. A photo of her was shown in this video.

I'll never forget that earthquake. We lived in Perris at the time and our house was shaking soooo hard. Watching the news stories the following day was awful

I live in Santa Monica California (Los Angeles County) used to live in San Francisco. My house is new and built to current earthquake codes for California and the office I work in has been retrofitted to current California earthquake codes. I have a storm shelter with a month’s worth of food and supplies in the case of an actual earthquake emergency. I forgot to add the biggest earthquake I was in: Loma Prieta in San Francisco October 17th 1989. I was at the A’s-Giants World Series game! 15 seconds of pure adrenaline and fear! I’m glad I wasn’t on the Bay Bridge and especially not on the Cypress Expressway!

Hardly, but you clearly weren't there or didn't live close enough to it. Although I didn't live in Northridge, I was living not far from there and the experience is something to be feared because it feels like everything around you are going to fall on top of you. Not only that, but the shaking also took many minutes to go away and a minute of that kind of shaking feels like it'll never end. Not counting the aftershocks that happened too, and I remember there were about 7 of those throughout the entire day.

Do you know the victims in the 1994 quake. It was deadly for those in the San Fernando Valley. However there are other faults in the LA area over due for the next 6.7 and above quake that is yet to be verified.
