The person reading the news didnt pay attention. It started in a river bed near Auto Center Drive. Person being interviewed corrected her. Evacuation order is for anyone in or near the riverbed, possibly including homeless persons who may be there.

Yes I noticed that when Andrew made clarifications and answered her questions thoroughly, she paused, didn't acknowledge or respond to his answers, and then just kept firing away questions. It was annoying to me... because what she said on the air at first was actually misinformation. She didn't express relief at the positive things he said or reiterate to the public the CORRECT information either. Felt like her ego was a bit bruised...

It's called Auto Fire because it started by Auto Center Drive, not because it started as an auto fire. It started in the homeless encampment which everyone in Ventura knows it right there in that area. Maybe finally that encampment is being cleared.

The Auto Fire is currently burning up river (dry bed) toward, and directly upwind from the mushroom farm that butts up to the river bed with the thickest concentration of brush. This mushroom farm is locally notorious for the large manure compost piles and grow beds that spontaneously combust and smolder creating a heavy, lingering foul smelling smoke. Ventura County is currently suing the mushroom farm over the toxic air pollution from the last fire that took VCFD 5 days to suppress. Several years ago a section of this farm spontaneously combusted and it smoldered for months. Back then I owned a business nearby, and the smell was overwhelming when the wind shifted, even worse when there was no wind at all. Even when its not burning, the smell is still very strong. People driving past Harbor blvd and Olivas Park Drive typically blame the smell on the sewer processing plant located at Harbor and Olivas, but it is actually the mushroom farm they smell. Hopefully the fire crews will prevent the fire from igniting the shroom farm again. Regardless of the smell, I'm not criticizing the mushroom farms existence, it is necessary agriculture. I'm pointing out that it is a virtual powder keg directly inline with the wind and fire direction. The open agriculture fields on either side of the river bed should be relatively safe, as they are well irrigated, and the typical crop rotations are high water content and are somewhat slow to burn, like celery, lettuce, cabbage, strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower etc., and the open flat fields are easy access for fire crews to quickly access and suppress. I live a few miles up the Santa Clara River near the southernmost edge of the Mountain Fire a few months ago with similar Santa Ana conditions. One night we watched it rain large embers for hours over the mixed agriculture fields in front of my house between East Ventura and Santa Paula. No fires in the agriculture, only A small amount of dry brush in the irrigation ditches between fields burned.

I'm thinking homeless encampment with a fire to keep warm, lost control of the fire, and this is the result when the fire department had budget cuts and is pushed to the limit by other fires in the area. I was reading that LA had something like 13,000 fires that were started by homeless people in 2024, some of those were arson but most were just fires that got out of control. So not arson. But negligence and massive incompetence by the local and state government. They have refused to deal with the homelessness issue in California for decades. And they refuse to properly manage their forest, or at least properly according to the definition of the rest of the world, because they put limits on everything in order to protect the environment.

Our local authorities stated the same thing, the fire started in a homeless encampment behind the Ventura Auto Center. If you lived in this area, you'd be very familiar with the homeless problem and the many fires started each year in the river bottom due to someone trying to cook or stay warm.

The fire was in Oxnard border crossing with ventura. Alot of homeless people live in that river bank. I was able to see the red flames from house which is about 15min away. And that's considering in Oxnard we have a flat land city

A good reason why squatting on public lands should simply NOT be tolerated. California, just like Oregon and Washington states, is dying from its own compassion. If you want to be compassionate, provide shelter... then force people to make use of it or be thrown in jail. People squatting on public land will - understandably - make fires to cook food, or to heat themselves in winter. The risk is far too high to afford to indulge compassion and tolerance for such behavior. May seem cruel, but sometimes there is no other choice than to be cruel to be kind (as the saying goes).

What it is, is the random ignitions that happen all the time, that either go out or someone puts them out, but with very very low humidity and very strong winds.

Or embers from miles away can travel and start fires elsewhere. With extreme dry conditions, ample dry foliage, 80-100mph winds, any place can easily burn with a single spark. I guess it is easier to visualize and blame a person, rather than climate change which is more difficult to visualize, is not satisfying to assign blame and is extremely hard to tackle. However, identifying the true cause is essential to solving the issue. If you want to assign blame however, the fossil fuel industries have known for decades that burning them as we have been would lead to climate disasters such as this, and put profit over people. So, please hold them accountable by fighting to switch to renewable energy NOW.
