Growing up my parents were on welfare and SSI and i had no idea that someone else had to pay for that in order for me to get a good education and decently clean clothes. Now that i have "made it" i dont complain about paying taxes because i know it might impact someone else who is in the same position i was in. I hate taxes but i am humbled by the good graces to be able to live in America, and to be given a shot at being successful

This happened in France too. They jacked up taxes on the 'super rich', and these people bought homes in other countries and moved. France ended up with less tax revenues than if they'd left the rates alone. They had to lower taxes again.

It really is cutting off your nose to spite your face. In the short term, promising "free" stuff will get you elected...until the bill come due, then you eventually either have to reverse that or get voted out. This is the beginning of the economic "death spiral". It's not so much the millionaires and billionaires leaving, it's when the upper middle class earners are leaving, which they are. Those that make between 100K-250K are now leaving. They're taking their tax revenue with them. California is so desperate that they're trying to tax residents as they leave the state. Note to all: I've lived 36 of my 50 years in California. I've lived in the Bay Area, Riverside County, and San Diego. I've worked in both the central valley and the Sacramento area. I currently live in San Diego county. I'm saying this to head off all of the typical "California is the 6th largest economy" in the world or the "California subsidizes" the red states commenters. I can tell you from first hand and years of experience that California is declining fast. The homeless problem is totally out of control. The crime, especially in the cities, is not only out of control, it's totally unaddressed. Believe me, I've lived in California longer than most of these commenters have been alive.

It’s not rich people leaving that’s really the problem. If you lose the ambitious young people, that’s when you are in real trouble. They see older people leaving, and they learn why, then they follow because they realize there’s no sense building a life where others will try to take it from you.

@@T1kr3b3u While that's certainly true, it doesn't change the high cost of living in the area. Even if you pay nothing in taxes, you're still paying an exorbitant amount for *everything*. And unless you land a lucrative starting position at one of the big firms in the state, it's nearly impossible to have a respectable life on your own with money left over for healthy savings. Of course, this mostly applies to the desired areas of the state. You can definitely have a decent quality of life in, say, Stockton, but then you have to live in Stockton

We left Santa Rosa. After we lost our home to the Tubbs Fire, Sonoma Co, wanted $45,000 in permits to rebuild our 1500 sq. ft. home. Just disgusting. We sold the lot, and it's still empty. They haven't collected real property taxes on that lot since 2017. How does that make economic sense? The sales tax on building materials, the property taxes on a home, the income taxes for the contractors, plus our income taxes lost to another state. I estimate, that $45K lost them $250K to date.

I left because of the crime. It’s a shame because I loved living in my neighborhood. But everyone I know either has been robbed, gotten their homes cased, assaulted, or knows someone who had this happen to them. Even Beverly Hills isn’t safe anymore. The Flats constantly have helicopters over the the homes because home invasions and break ins are becoming common. Yet there are a lot of Angelenos who think the open drug use, near elementary schools and day cares, fires, assaults, frequent home invasions, follow and robs, homeless people defecating in businesses serving food and supermarkets, and then carrying weapons to harm people is normal. The rest of the world doesn’t act this way.

I feel bad for the lowest paid workers that may be affected, but not CEO's. A lot of them have created this abusive corporate pay structure where they are paid 300 to 400 percent the salary of entry level workers. Most add very little value. Give people a financial motivation to do something and that's what they'll do. Especially people who have worked to be successful, only to see their taxes go up and their standard of living go down.

i left in 2018 and took 25 office job to texas, the state was too much to deal with. The taxes and high prices I can live with, but the hostile business law drove us away. There are too many fraudulent EDD claim and ppl came in to take advantage of the california law. We were being scam left and right, then went to the EDD board and got slap in the face, so i left. I sold my company in 2020 in texas and now am retired in florida. It's a sad story bc i grew up in california, but the hostile business environment need to change.
