Home security video captures the tense moment a coyote sneaks into a Woodland Hills home and stands off with a housecat in the middle of the night.
The coyote is seen strolling into the living room through a doggie door around 4 a.m. before being greeted by a fierce, hissing cat. The cat is darting around on dining chairs as the coyote appears apprehensive and spooked by the feline.
KTLA's John Fenoglio reports on May 5, 2023.

Cats are incredible creatures. When my brother and I were in Junior High School. We had a car named Simba and a hound mix named Boomer. Or chain link fence was up against a field behind the house. One day a Doberman Pincher (Pitbull of the 1970's) was at the gate and was in a snarling contest that was quite aggressive. Simba cooly jumped up on the top of the gate and jumped on to the back of the Doberman and with his claws buried into the dogs back, rode him about 30 feet as the Doberman ran away yelping. Simba jumped off the dog like a champion bronk rider then trotted back over and jumped the fence like it was nothing. Nobody messed with his buddy Boomer on his watch. Not sure how he'd fair with a hungry coyote.

There are cat doors/doggy doors that interact with your pet's microchip, so it auto-locks until it senses the microchip from your pet going into it, unlocks for that pet, then autolocks again. You can even set schedules for each animal so if they come in after a certain time, you can keep them indoors, etc. I'm glad that cat didn't killed by the coyote!

I had a kitten who would listen to my commands since I raised him since he was a newborn I gave him milk and I would take him to play with stray kittens and their mom at the park since he never had siblings and a mom I found him alone on my front steps... my mom didn't let me keep him since we had to move. But that was the smartest kitten I ever had. I would ride around town on my bike with him inside my shirt and take him to play with the local stray cats and he would always come back to me when I would call him

If I was your mom we would have had that kitten for it’s entire life. You have the power to change your family training. I was talked into giving my loyal German shepherd away “to a better home” in 1974 and I later learned he had been collected with other free dogs to sell to a lab for medical experiments (tortured). I’m 68 and it’s my biggest regret. Keep your pets forever and give them the best home you are able to. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

That was definitely a kitty that would have been a great cat. When they’re trained like that from very young, they adapt well to do a lot of things other cats usually won’t. My friend did that w/a kitten & that cat was much more like a dog, than any cat I ever saw! Went on walks w/her, to the beach to play & walk/run around, loved car rides & would wait on it for when she would go out in it. Loved to curl around her neck as she was inside walking around. She carried it on her shoulders as a small kitten & it adapted to be able to stay there as it grew. A great kitty! I’m so sorry you were robbed of a beautiful little companion. It’s never right to get rid of pets. They are for life! I so hope you gave it to people you knew, that kept it & loved it forever. Any other option was too risky.

@@im-gi2pg That is horrendous! I don’t blame you for never getting over that. I fear the same for an incredibly smart dog given to us by people we knew for years that lived a few blocks up the street. The father was transferred out of the country for his job & they had a wonderful black lab mix, ‘Laddie’. There were 5 of us kids & we had a big yard. They asked us if we would want him & we all were very excited, of course. My father didn’t want Laddie inside, so he had to stay in the garage a lot, when not out w/us. Or tied to the clothesline pole in the yard, b/c my father wouldn’t get a fence at the driveway to keep him in. He was so obedient, he probably would have never left the yard, once he adapted to us. IDK. He did leave a few times to go back to his old home, after they left. :( He would bark a lot at night in the garage, he was so upset not having his family & no comfort at night in our garage. My brother used to sneak out to sleep w/him to help him be comfy. My father just wasn’t having any of it. After a month or so, we came home from school & Laddie was gone! He said he took him to the shelter, where he was taken right away by a nice family. I never believed him. Especially after I too, learned of what happened to so many shelter dogs, if they didn’t get homes by a deadline....Gassing was the common way to kill them then. And they also had contracts w/labs to sell them in bulk. I was young...4th grade. I too, have never forgotten Laddie. And what was probably his horrid fate. After being so well loved & cared for, for almost 6 yrs from a pup. To lose his family to my father’s total rejection of him & then suffer that next step he most likely did....🤢🤮 That dog was almost human! He did everything he was told, the first time, w/o hesitation. I used to take him for long walks daily & would always drop the leash after I got out of sight of my parents & he never left my side. At the park, he was a wizard w/playing catch, flying in the air before the ball hit the ground. If he played w/other dogs, he would come immediately when called away, no prob. He knew every command & so many tricks! Even walking backwards! He was also very protective. When a stranger (males) spoke to me, he was right there, giving the wary eye & a low growl, unless I told him ’OK Laddie’. I wailed for days, until my mom took me to the shelter w/o my father’s knowledge, so I could talk to the ppl there about him. At first, they were stumped. But then one lady said she remembered him & came back w/a card, saying ‘yes, he was adopted quickly’. Still, I never quite believed it. I so hope I’m wrong. We finally did get a dog/puppy, a couple yrs later, we kept for life. A few of us never got past the sudden departure of that wonderful black lab mix, Laddie. So, enter Inky, A black poodle mix, half the size of Laddie. ‘Inky’ became my best friend for the next 17 yrs. And in the meantime, my father vacated, & things were much better, all around. ;) Inky became as smart as Laddie & much more protective of all of us & his home. He prevented a break in & never forgot any bullies any of us kids had contended with. ;) He literally went almost everywhere w/me. Ran alongside my bike & when I got my license & first car, he went everywhere in it, too. He even went on dates w/me! 😂 Clearly, a ‘love me, love my dog’ scenario! Putting him down was the hardest thing I ever had to do. He’s buried at a lake, where we rented a great camp every month of August & it was the happiest times of our childhoods. (Our father was only there on weekends;) We got permission from the owner, to bury him w/their dog, that was next to him. Even after some years, I would still go visit there, b/c we knew so many ppl, & I planted purple Asters & made a little rock marker around them. They bloomed each yr for some yrs, anyway. Once I moved, IDK how much longer. Last I was there, was about a decade ago. No Asters, rock markers gone. But the ground was still ‘settled’ where the 2 dogs are. I left a few more rocks... ;) But had to be careful, as the camps are now owned by strangers. So is the last one where I used to go visit, when I was ‘home’. It was just across the dirt road from where we spent a month of childhood bliss, every year. Now, we can have our pets cremated & bring them w/us. As I’ve done w/my last 3 dogs now...all rescues. All similar in size. All about the same size as ‘Inky’. ;) None quite as smart, however. Never gets easier. :( I look forward to having them all w/me in God’s Great Heaven, one day, in the not too distant future.❤🐾 Didn’t think I’d get into all this.... Thanks for reading. :)

Good kitty! One night I came downstairs to find my cat sitting about 15 feet from his food area staring in that direction… I moved my gaze toward the food bowls and there was a raccoon sitting there munching on the dry food! we lived in a condo with a detached garage, and our cat had created a little cat door in the screen of our patio slider. Someone had left the garage door wide-open to the alley while taking out the trash or bringing in some other items and the raccoon took the opportunity! This was in the reseda and Lassen area of Northridge. We also used to get an owl or two that would come through and stock our cat at night! This is why you don't have a doggie door. Just pay attention to your animals and let them out when they alert you (whining, pawing, pacing, nibbling at hands/sleeves to lead, etc). Imagine that coyote finding a sleeping toddler whose bedroom door is ajar. I would never be able to live with myself 😢

I suspect that family learned a little lesson not to be leaving their doggie door unlocked at night. That cat is lucky he's still alive and didn't get dragged off and eaten. I'm signed up with an email program with the humane society whereby I get emails in regards to lost dogs and cats in the area I live. It's amazing how many dogs and cats are lost every week just in my local area. As a matter of fact, it's rather shocking and sad. I will never understand why people allow their loving cats to run around outside and risk dealing with coyotes and cars. If you let your cat run around outside, there's a good chance a coyote will get them.

We got a Kevlar coyote vest for our dog with a spiked neck guard and she wears it whenever we’re outside. I live in the woods in VA. We have pack of coyotes, or I should say “had”. We have Turkish Kangal Dogs. The old man of our crew stays in the house. When I hear the coyotes getting close to our property, I bring him out on the porch. His bark is ferocious and loud…it echos off a bluff and rolls down the valley like he’s an angry monster. The coyotes hear that and they are gone for months. You can keep a Kangal in a neighborhood if you socialize them as a puppy. They should meet everyone in your neighborhood early and often to know who is supposed to be there. Including pets. They need exercise, and a strong person to walk them. They are slow to mature…not obedience types. They are independent thinkers who judge danger and expect the pack (their humans) to let them do their jobs. You WILL need a good strong fence, six feet. They absolutely know dogs from wolves or coyotes or hybrids. A man brought a wold hybrid pup to our old man’s puppy kindergarten class. No one knew, except our dog who got along with all the pups EXCEPT that hybrid.

As for why they are coming into neighborhoods more, I've done a bit of reading on this, and some wildlife experts believe that it's not due to human encroachment but more that they are evolving to find easier food. Woodland hills is full of homes from the 1950-1970s. It's not like there are many new places to build. I live in Thousand Oaks not far from the park Rancho Sierra. It's the largest suburban/urban park system in the US. It's 150,000 acres of mountains, hills, woods and meadows. The coyotes will leave the park and cross the street to hunt in neighborhoods. The newest neighborhoood is over 20 years old. The rest of the homes in this area were built between the 50s-1980s. Again, nobody has encroached for decades. Apparently they are evolving to be less afraid of humans and learning that backyards with pets make for easier food. They've become a real problem in our area. Where I used to live in Virginia, you could hunt them year around so it was super rare for one to end up in a suburb. Not that I could ever hunt for anything. I don't want to see them killed. But people also should be able to use their own yard for their pets. I'm always hearing about someone's small dog taken by a coyote after they let the dog out to pee either early morning or evening hours.
