Yorkies are so small and vulnerable. You don’t just have to worry about coyotes, but larger more aggressive dogs. They do bark , and can be feisty but he’s lucky the coyote lost interest in him or he’d be dead.

Dogs in a dog park are typically well trained and friendly in a way that makes them not interested in attacking other animals in general, don't use that as a comparison to all dogs. I've seen many videos of unprovoked large dogs attacking smaller ones for no reason. It does happen quite often.

Saw the actual footage, and she's literally a 10 year old child--I don't blame her. She tried to get the Yorkie to run, but it was in defensive mode. It is recommended by wildlife experts to NOT bend near a predator as they are typically aiming for the neck. You bending over is giving them access and making yourself look smaller in that moment. Your suggestion goes against everything you should do in this situation regardless and for a child it is even worse. The girl probably can't even identify a coyote at a glance, and even if she could, she should not put her self in danger for a pet. Children are taught to run for help when they are in danger, she did exactly as she was supposed to. What has this world come to where we blame a child for not facing down a wild animal?

The same thing happened to me when I was walking my labrador x kelpie up this mountain walk that we always walked along. The coyote didn't actually attack my dog though it came close and was acting aggressive and my dog started growling and barking at it. When the coyote was going to growl and bite back I ran at it and yelled very loud and the coyote hightailed it.

Cayote would have attacked her..... lots of cayotes down by the lake area neighbourhoods and have heard a few stories of how brazen they are with grown adult men walking their dogs. They will attack so be ready but I would not expect a child to try to fend it off, she did the right thing to yell and someone did hear and came along wished it would have been a quicker response. Wonder how many neighbours just watched from their windows.....

It is not recommended by ANY wildlife experts to bend over next to a predator, as you are bringing you neck in easy reach, plus are making yourself smaller next to them. What you are saying could get the child killed. No, she shouldn't bend down and pick up her dog with a coyote two feet away. This same coyote was reported a few blocks away in the news report attacking a full grown man, it would have harmed the little girl 100%

100% dog lover and owner my entire life, and the moronic derps commenting on how that CHILD was wrong for running blows my mind. That being said, that toy dog handled itself pretty well IMO, but may have been worse had that CHILD stood up to that coyote, because even though that dog is a 10th of the coyotes size, it likely went after the coyote because she was nearby and big or small, dogs will defend their pack. Everyone involved are lucky that the coyote decided that neither of them were worth the fight. Animal control will likely track that coyote and put it down, given it has a tracking collar. If that little girl reads these comments, don't listen to the dopes on here... you did the Right thing!

If you expect a 10 year old to defend something with their life, you need your head checked. Children shouldn't be expected to put their life in danger for a pet. And yeah, it should be instict for a child to run for an adult if they are in a dangerous situation. What adult doesn't tell a child to run for help if they are in danger??? You really wanted this 10 year old girl to risk potential rabies, being the Coyote's next target, or worse for a dog? Really? Not to mention that in the report for this story, the coyote went on to attack a full grown man a few blocks away, proving that it deciding to attack the child instead was a real possibility. A 10 year old child IS the vulnerable tf. Parents teach their child to get adult help when they are in danger, not risk their life for a dog. Btw, the full story of this incident reports that a few blocks away this same coyote attacked a grown man, so clearly it was not going to be scared away by a little girl and would have been able to hurt her badly.
