To both Catherine Caroline Forbes and Cubetrosity: thank you for your comments. This is general common sense. Always ask the owner first. You don’t ever try to pet a dog or any other animal that you don’t know. Heh, though when it comes to my dad’s dog, Jet, she’ll be going straight to you for attention. She’s a love bug and loves attention. Not to mention she’s hyper, very hyper. Don’t know what breed she is. But still, love your comments.

Saw one (a younger dog) at my local Walmart in Northern Michigan; the second time I saw it, with its handler/trainer, I HAD to ask what breed it was. You could see it was a "pedigreed" pooch. The gentleman told me I COULD pet him, (never DO so WITHOUT permission, people!) and stated that he was a "Redbone." (Coon Hound) Being a "Lab" man myself, (Labrador Retrievers) I STILL have high regard for ANY good looking, quality dog--words HERE can't describe how AWESOME that Service Dog In Training looked--well, maybe "magnificent"---and he WAS... lol

I have a friend that appears completely fit, and healthy. He is in his early 30s, and does not appear to have a disability, but he has a German Shepherd service dog that he takes everywhere. People make rude comments, and confront him sometimes because he looks healthy, and they don't think that he should have the dog. What those people don't realize is that he has a severe seizure disorder. His service dog is trained to alert him when he is about to have a seizure, and to protect him while he is indisposed. No one has a right to confront someone with a service animal, and demand to know their medical condition.
@aennaenn7468
@aennaenn7468 6 жыл бұрын
Not ENTIRELY true. But basically yes. There are only two questions that store associates/security/etc can ask. And there isn't really a clear answer on whether the service dogs owner HAS to answer them or not. But. You CAN ask. 1. Is this animal for a disability? (Note this isn't asking WHAT disability you have) 2. What work is this animal trained to perform? (I.e. what is it supposed to do for you?) Both are designed to give employees a way to recognize that the animal is working, and what it should look like if the animal is currently performing it's function, and the person may need assistance or something.
@raicrush

@LooneyPlootzy Some people, kinda like the guy that is being spoken about in this video, are so conceded that THEY demand answers for something that doesn't even concern them at all. My grandma only has one functioning arm due to a botched breast surgery to remove the breast due to cancer, but she was still able to keep the non-working arm. Because of the arm and some other health issues she is able to have a handicap sign for her car. One time when she got out some jerk confronted her about it, saying that she "didn't look handicap" to him. Some people are just very ignorant.

I' work in the transportation industry and have witnessed passengers lie and call they're pets service animals. A service animal is trained and does not go around sniffing people or urinates on floors. Unfortunately there are low life people who abuse a law and make it harder for people who truly need service animals. Just waiting for the day when someone puts a vest on a raccoon and now it's a service animal. That's the real abuse.

It’s actually a federal offense to interfere with a service dog, or to attack a service dog. It comes with a hefty fine and jail time if a handler so chooses to push it far. As a teenager service dog handler I have been shoved, belittled, called names, my leash has almost been snatched from my hand and people have tried to hit him with shopping carts or step on my dog. As well as my last dog has been attacked by multiple fake service dogs in Walmart and had scars. The US needs to do something better for us. The way we’re treated is absolutely disgusting

Omigosh that’s insane! Who the hell would hit a dog with a shopping cart, any dog, for that matter??? I’d rather mistake a fake service dog for a real one than cause emotional distress on the part of a legitimately disabled owner by accusing them of faking. I work in retail, I haven’t encountered a service dog user yet, but how do you know if it’s a legit service dog or not? I assumed by the vest and stuff that it would be legit but I keep reading that scumbags are purchasing fake vests to have fake service animals. Is there a question I should ask or a label that would be visible?

@@juliarunn5009 a real service dog is one that has been specifically and thoroughly trained to mitigate a disabled persons disability. You can usually tell by the way they act and in America, they legally don’t need a vest or anything marking them as a service dog. If you have doubts, you can ask 2 questions. 1. Is that a service dog And if yes 2. What task or tasks is it trained to provide. If they answer with “it just makes me feel better” or anywhere along the lines of them saying emotional support, they are fake. If they slap down a card and say that’s proof, it is not as no national registry is in existence and the ADA does not recognize them. I answer with “psychiatric and medical alert and response” Even if they are real service dogs, if they are causing a scene or trouble, you have the right to ask them to leave.

@Main Street Boxer It's not so much knowing, or even caring about, every jot and tittle of the law/facts. I had a platonic female roommate whose boyfriend was Shock And Awe-era Iraq Veteran who was regularly bothered by businesses who thought they didn't have to admit his PTSD service dog. There were several incidents where we were confronted by employees and proprietors who A) Thought he because he wasn't blind that his dog wasn't a real service dog, or B) Thought that, just because they were private business owners who built that business with their blood, sweat and tears, they didn't have to obey the Americans With Disabilities Act. One crybaby business owner actually believed that he had the discretion to dismiss the A.D.A. as "some communist Federal Gub-Mint New World Order bullshit" because it was his precious private business, empowering them to choose who and who not to serve. Another snitched to the police who promptly told him that the ADA and Public Accommodation Law trumped his proprietorship. That piece of shit kicked out all of his customers and closed for the rest of the day in protest. Thanks to Facebook, he had to accept a "Service-Dog-In-Day" in his precious fucking private business the subsequent Saturday...some of those dogs were just wearing fake Service Dog vests, For The Win. I LOVE that shit. Same as when racists didn't want to serve blacks but were forced to do so anyway and when Christians don't want to serve LGBT but are forced to do so anyway. If you're going to run a business, you will have to submit to the edicts of a well-functioning collective society. The Rugged Individualist is dead.

That makes me sick. Service animals are necessary and people who try to take them are committing assault. Comic Drew Lynch (he's on KZbin) has a stutter and a service dog. He talks about incidents like this that have happened to him and others, plus some of his commenters also share such stories. Always get the police involved and get a record of each incident. I used to work for a King Soopers myself and we had no problems allowing service animals into the store. In fact many people there welcomed them, thinking they were a bit of sweetness for a sour day. If memory serves, we only had one incident where a man with a prosthetic leg was driving around in a motorcart and he was YELLING at an elderly man for having a service dog 'in the fucking way.' Now. State law FORBIDS us from getting physically involved... but someone did wheel a cart around and separated the two as the elderly man tried to move away. Security had to be called in... Made me FURIOUS We couldn't interfere.

The store should have surveillance tapes that could be turned over to the authorities for possible identification of the harasser. I also agree with the woman, it’s the cheaters that cast bonafide service animals in a bad light. I used to work in a grocery store and would see folks bring in little “purse dogs” and say that the animals were emotional support animals - which does NOT mean they are automatically service animals! - or try to claim them as service animals. We were prevented from confronting them or even raising the issue because the law prevented us. Service animals are specially trained to perform tasks to assist their owners. They are also trained to high standards of behavior in public. Think Guide Dogs for the blind and that’s the sort of training involved. The animals must pass rigorous training and tests to gain the skills needed to operate in potentially high-stress situations, such as heavy crowds and areas with obstacles/hazards, while keeping calm and focused. A very sad incident in my area a couple years ago involved an actual service dog being violently attacked by a non-service dog on a public bus. If memory serves, the service dog was a smaller breed and ended up dying as a result of its injuries. The initial claims of the owner of the attacking dog were that it was a service dog, too. This was found to be total bullshit. It was a horrific example of what can happen when folks cheat so they can take their f’ing pet where they shouldn’t.

Well it may not affect me but I don’t want someone to kick another person so I stop the person from kicking again. Imposing your will isn’t ways a bad thing I don’t have problem with people imposing their will just imposing their will unreasonable. Another situation is on the subway a man using a cane to walk needs a seat though someone is taking up two. Well it doesn’t affect me so I should let the man fall. It’s not illegal to take up two seats if you report it then nothing will happen either. The man doesn’t have a right to a seat. Still I would impose my will and ask him to give up seat or shame him for not giving up his seat to the disabled old man.
@hamstermain8327
@hamstermain8327 5 жыл бұрын
CavedMan Jim Though if it isn’t by law then it is imposing your will. You think they should stop taking up the seat it not based on law or anything written just what you want. It is my will when it doesn’t effect me it’s just me talking to them because I want the guy to have a seat. When you try to do something that will effect others when it wouldn’t effect you I would say is imposing your will. I take the train everyday and people often times people take up two seats even the disabled and sometimes I don’t have seat to give up. When I have a seat I give it up and my ride is like 15 mins so it’s pretty short. I think politics need to improve because people take things has you are with me or against me. That’s not healthy way of think and all you are doing is dividing yourself. People need to listen to other ideas instead of just trying to put them in categories like democrat or republican. The choices are limited which supports the you are with me or against me argument because you have two choices if you vote one party you are voting against the other.

CavedMan Jim m I think since Social Law is constantly changing and is different for each person then it can’t really be used in situations since it’s not official or written. Since the guy you are talking to could have a very different view point. It’s basically what you think because of it being different and unofficial. So I think that is imposing your will. It will probably take centuries for our political system to advance though it going to happen there were times when we had one party and times when we had three. It’s going to change eventually.

I avoided them. Then I was in the trees section (where they put them on pallets with an aisle to go down, but it was narrow and loads of foliage crowding the space). And this manchild decides his best route to get to the front of the garden section isn't going up one aisle over, he decides to come crowd into the aisle I'm in with his horse dog. I had to scootch over and this dog (who I don't blame) begins nosing and sniffing and rubbing his snot snout on me. I was furious and scolded the manboy who then threw a tantrum "It's just a dog! It's just a dog, GEEEEZ! It's just a DOG!" He had no sense of other people's entitlement not to have dog snot wiped on them. In his world, dog snot is like water from the faucet, like the air we breathe, as in "dog snot is part of daily life". An employee came over and the man whined at the employee I was complaining about his dog and I called out "he wiped his snot all over me. Take better control of your dog. Here’s the deal. If you have a SERVICE dog. It’s completely legit to have it in a store. I have no problem with people and their pets in their own house apts etc. I am an animal lover. And have my own. One thing I don’t do or understand. ASIDE FROM SERVICE DOGS. Why do you have to take fee fee grocery shopping with you. I’ve seen this in FL, and only with the seasonal people coming down. Sitting fee fee in the grocery cart, while grocery shopping. There’s a reason the FDA have laws about animals where food is. Hookworms and roundworms are two of the most common parasites found in our pets that have zoonotic potential for humans. These worms can be very prolific and one worm can produce more than 100,000 eggs a day. I don’t know the health of your animal. Nor do I want to be bothered while grocery shopping. Or have some mother put their child in a cart a dog has been sitting in after fee fee has been sitting there. Leave your pet home if you are going to be where food is. That’s all I care about.

@@C.Church that’s discusting and I don’t blame you actually. And there is also a difference between a service dog and what people claim to be “emotional support”. Even the Americans with Disabilities state this: . Americans With Disabilities cites that emotional support dogs or animals do not have the training to do specific tasks in assisting a person with disability or impairment, unlike service animals. Hence, the pets may not be allowed to accompany their owner in public places ie. restaurants, stores, hotels

My grandmother has a service dog for her oxygen. She has trouble breathing otherwise. In the last year though she's kind of become the service human. The pup has been having sesures when she gets too hot. Shes only 8, but now relies on my grandmother to keep her cool and safe. They work for eachother now. Grandma keeps her cool and safe and helps through sesures, and gives her meds. And the pup helps my grandmother when her breathing gets labored due to lack of oxygen.

A service dog is literally a medical tool. It is a crime to distract them or cause harm to their owners. Yes, it is a dog and yes it is a part of their owner's family, but that dog has a job. They cannot be distracted as you don't know why that dog is needed. Be it seizures, fainting spells, etc. You are putting a person's life at risk because you want to pet the dog, your disgusting kids want to pet the dog, you don't think the dog belongs there or whatever other reason you have to distract a WORKING, MEDICAL EQUIPMENT ANIMAL. It isn't hard to teach your kids to leave dogs (or ponies or whatever else animal is being used as a service animal) alone. It isn't hard to ignore them. It isn't hard to let another person live their life without fear you're going to be a risk to them. You also don't have any right to know what disability a person has to require a fucking service dog. Just ignore them, keep walking, stay out of their way and control your brats.

The store manager was not the one to okay a pet into the store. The customer was right to have a fit, because only SERVICE DOGS are allowed in the store. If the manager allowed every dog and cat into the store that was not trained service animals, he could get into trouble with the health department. A dog will pee at any spot in the store, thus insuring a health hazard. You should have not taken the dog with you in the vehicle, should have left it at home where it belongs, not in a grocery store. Trained service dogs serve a purpose to help its owner with his/her health issue. A pet dog belongs at home. Next time, leave it at home.

In the case of the woman in this news story, she can't leave the house without her dog. What would you propose she do if she goes out to eat? Leave her dog outside the restaurant for an hour +? No! That would be stupid. And if you think ALL dogs shed hair, bark, and bite, you're retarded. Here's 5 dog breeds I can think of off the top of my head that don't shed. 1. Maltese 2. Shih Tzu 3. Tibetan terrier 4. Brussels griffon 5. Portuguese water dogs For the other 2, Just train your dog that barking and biting isn't ok, and problem solved. And this is just talking about normal "pet" dogs. A certified service dog, (or any animal for that matter.) will be trained not to bark, bite, or generally do anything that could hurt anyone. Do you think they just give out dogs willy-nilly and say they're service animals? No! I am glad to see so many people speak up about this issue. I and my young daughter encountered a woman and her service dog at our family doctor's. I had taught my daughter not to touch stranger's pets because you never know the animal's disposition. My daughter was very young, 3 or 4 yrs and she almost reached out to pet the woman's service dog, but she must have remembered the rules and she pulled back her hand and turned to me and asked. I didn't know the rules about service dogs, but I told her the rule about unknown animals and told her to ask the woman (who engaged in eye and verbal contact). The woman was kind and explained "No, because he's a service dog and on duty." We both respected the woman's wishes. After about fifteen minutes, she spoke to her dog briefly, and turned my daughter and I, giving my daughter permission to talk to and pet her dog. The dog was so friendly and beautifully trained. The woman thanked my daughter and then me, and explained about service dogs and how to tell which dogs are service animals. We all learned much that day by being respectful to each other. My little girl and I were educated that day, but I wish we had known already because little ones and naive older ones can make a huge mistake with these working animals who are partners, not just pets.

The fundamental problem with touching a trained service animal at work isn't that they might be dangerous. It's that you distract them from their job, which is protecting someone. Touch a working service animal and you endanger that person. Animal companions that aren't trained service animals re social animals with the same instincts. Honestly I will turn into a mean little person if you touch my service dog without ask, ok a kid I get adult no.

Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) makes it legal for people with disabilities to be able to have their dogs with them anywhere. The dog does NOT need a license of any kind. The dog does NOT have to be in a vest of any kind. Your dog can be trained by their owner to do these tasks. People are only allowed to ask if it is a service dog?....and what task does the dog perform for you? The dog DOES have to be non aggressive and is not allowed to misbehave. They are allowed to bark, if that is an alert to their owner. People are not allowed to interfere with a service dog in any way.

There’s no “tests” for a service dog. You don’t have to have the dog go do tests. They need to be able to do their job. Like responding to a seizure..or reminding someone to take their medication. On top of that the owner needs to train the dog to behave in public and teach them right from wrong and to ignore other people. They can behave like a service dog in public but if they don’t do something for their owner who has a disability or illness then they aren’t a service animal..their isn’t any real registration or tests that mean anything

It's because people lie about needing service dogs too often. I remember a woman took her dog to this festival and the dog got loose and took off running all over. She called and called for it to come back chasing it around. Took her a good 20 minutes to get him. Now on the other hand my aunt is legally blind and has an amazing service dog. It can learn up to 2,000 words. Her's knows left, right, 360, 180, etc. Pretty amazing. And they don't just place you with any dog either. They flew her out to the training facility where she stayed 1 month to get to know the dog and train with the dog. They make sure the dog is compatible with you.

So tragic!! People are just crazy!! If the dog is performing a service that's all there is to it. The line is crossed if a dog is creating a disturbance (aggression, destruction etc). Otherwise, the dog has a job to do and that's it. Doesn't matter the breed, the size, the age etc. I know she was upset but my advice to people is, if a worker is denying access and doesn't want to budge, you keep calm, walk out and call 911. Let the police handle the situation (also ask for a senior officer so you're dealing with someone who has handled these situations in the past and is familiar with the law). Don't leave, just step outside and wait for police

Having someone try to take your service dog really is like someone trying to take your wheelchair, I should know since I need both. And the feeling when someone is trying to intimidate you and make you leave because they aren’t happy being near what you need to function every day is indescribable. I’m fortunate in Texas there are laws protecting service dog owners from harassment that are actually enforced and it is never been an issue here but in Maryland it certainly was in many many places. I’m so sick of these people that take advantage of the service dog regulations, or should I say lack of regulations, they are making life more of a hell for those of us who really do need our SDs just because they want to take their puppy everywhere or not be charged extra for a plane or hotel.

R Vandenburg actually that’s what’s happening a lot in our world today. People are getting influenced by the media and that sometimes makes them make dumb assumptions. Like I remember one time seeing a news video about a mom complaining about an airport security system for doing a pat down on her and her son. Like that’s basic procedure and after 9/11 they’ve become even stricter. Before everyone thought that service dogs were completely okay but now that there are people who abuse the system people are starting to think that any service dog they see is fake. They don’t know if it’s fake or not but now that the people who fake it are becoming more in the known that makes them even more paranoid. I’m not trying to justify this guys actions or the people who abuse the system at all but the fact that you’re so willing to assume what a person is regularly like just because of one incident they had?? I personally think service animals are great. But I respect that not everyone agrees and that they have the right to that opinion. What the man certainly did NOT have a right to do, was trying to take her dog. That would be like someone not agreeing with a button on my purse, and then trying to remove it. Or not agreeing with a message on my shirt, and trying to take it. No matter if the woman was in the right or not, the dog still belongs to her, and no one has a right to try and steal her dog. I was in kindergarten when I learned two wrongs don't make a right. This guy and those that joined in with him should maybe go back to school. There are proper mature ways to handle situations, none of which were attempted by those that were upset by the dog.

Sorry for any confusion caused by my lack of clarity. I do see the difference. But just because someone needs something, does not negate someones right to have an opinion about it. That doesn't mean they have the right to try and force their opinion on anyone. I in no way was defending the nameless man, just was refusing to stoop to his level of immaturity or disrespect. I can point out why his actions are wrong, while still respecting his right to his opinions and feelings.
@Severn963
@Severn963 7 жыл бұрын
I'm enjoying the conversation and the furthering of the conversation as well. I think everyone is entitled to think and feel how they wish, however, a person's rights end, where another's rights begin. So he has a right to feel how he does, but, so does everyone else, and no one has a right to try and force their feelings or thoughts or opinions on others. Having the opinion wasn't wrong, his taking out that opinion on her, very much was wrong, and not within his rights. Had I witnessed it, I would have gladly called the cops for her. As for those that so violently and wrongly harasses people with service animals, they are bullies. The service animal tells these people that their owner is an easy target, and thus they lash out. (I don't think those that need service animals are weak or easy targets, I just think this is a misguided impression that bullies are given) If they really wanted their views to be heard, if they really wanted to try and make a change, then they wouldn't target disabled people or those with service animals. They would petition store owners to change their policy, and for laws to be changed. Or try to find some compromise that doesn't take away from a disabled person's needs, while still respecting their delicate sensitivities.

He doesn’t need to know why you have the dog there. As long as you have everything that’s required then that’s all that matters!!! Not what’s wrong not what kinda of dog it is!!! No I do not have one myself. I do have a lot of dogs and they are a big help because I have a lot of things wrong with me but I don’t really go anywhere or anything so I don’t do the service thing. However if I wanted to then it’s my choice and my doctors or who ever else who have to talk to do it. If someone like him had the same problems as me or someone else who needs help then they would change the attitude!!!!

Omg I deal with these people at my call center job. People will call in saying all animals should die and saying service animals or pets shouldn’t be allowed to be owned. These Karen’s are insane.

It's probably a good thing I wasn't at this store. I'd help this lady out. She shouldn't have to worry about anyone being abusive towards her or her SD. There are way too many fake ones out there, but that's no excuse to treat any SD or their person this way. What ever happened to respecting others anymore?

You see "way too many" "fake" service dogs? Really? How the fuck do you KNOW they're "fake"?
@katz734

L Whitby if you have a clue what a service dog is about and when they are around, you can see they are trained. They stay calm in all situations and have not one ounce of aggression in them. Non-service dogs have no training, they bark, they are out of control and some can be aggressive towards people and other animals. These are just a couple ways to tell. There are so many different duties these dog do for their owners, so maybe you should do a little research yourself and then you will be able to pick out the fakes too. I've researched and been around SD's so that's how the fuck I know.

I look very healthy and capable but have a service dog for complex PTSD. Appearance isn't a good reason to doubt whether or not someone needs that extra help. I've been very lucky to have never dealt with something like this. Most people are very understanding and kind when they see my dog at my side...hopefully more will continue to learn about service dogs and mental Illness. They really do help! 😊🐶🐕❤

PTSD is a silent wound. Appearances are of no concern, which goes for the dog as well. the moronic public needs to be educated.

Service dogs and emotional support dogs are 2 different things. But I would not personally ( and am appalled at those who do) approach or disturb either one. I most certainly would help defend anyone who interferes and offer assistance if needed. Same for special parking spots, as you say, outward appearances may not show the special needs. For heavens sake.. Y'all just mind your business!

@@poorthing Service dogs arent actually just for physical disabilities. They're also for mental illnesses and disorders that can put the person in danger or for severe cases. For example, PTSD service dogs are specifically trained to do a grounding technique to prevent or cease a bout of flashbacks and such. Service dogs also help with autism meltdowns as well as another example. ESAs don't have that special training, and shouldn't be mistaken for psychological service dogs.

@@romem1952 yes . I know all that. I stated all that but it is worth repeating. I know a hearing impaired person with other issues who has a service dog who is remarkable in what and how she alerts to sounds.

I see ads teaching people how to get their animal registered as an emotional support pet all the time, this is doing such a disservice to the people who actually need service animals for legitimate reasons

No one "caused" that man to do anything other than himself. He was 100% responsible for his decision to try to regulate another customer's behavior and attempt to steal their service animal. "Fraudulent service dogs" is not the cause of this. That man thinking he had any right to tell anyone else what to do was.
