"I have no interest in riding fast on the road". Good point. Commute slowly to your dirt location and then ride those dirt tires where they belong. ABS and traction control helps look out for you while riding the blacktop road to your dirt destination. "It's all about tires!" So important on a motorcycle. Even in Moto GP not only can tires be a determining factor, but even tire strategy.... such as the to go from a rain tire to a slick tire as a track dries after rain.

Excellent advice! I heard Jimmy Lewis say the same thing that having the right tires is about SAFETY. Like you say, no point in finding yourself in the middle of nowhere with a tire that can't deliver the performance you need. Some are happy with the trade off of performance for longevity. Not me. I also really liked the Pirelli Scorpion Rally but for some reason they are less common here in the States. I got them for the sand of LAB2V and they didn't disappoint.

I agree tires make it or brake it, for the last four years I have bin running a terra flex 140/80/18 24mm deep lugs!! on the back and a pirelli xc heavy duty on the front never ever had any problems. In Alberta Canada we ride in the west County a lot and the combo works well through the muskie mud to the high loss rock mountains. Ride hard! cheers

Perfect explanation of matching tires to adventure motorbikes. Very counter to the nonsense I always hear or read on the trail/street or online which always involves a tire's longevity versus traction. I just accept the limits of the tire bc as we know tires are always compromise.

While I tend to agree that Pirelli tyres are generally a good thing, I do disagree with you on one point, that good tyres (presumably Pirelli your sponsor) are the most important thing. From my experience, rider skill is absolutely the most important thing and one needs to get that part right and no amount of tyre performance or other devise is going to substitute for it.

if you need to drop the pressure your tires are not suited for the terrain, dropping the pressure is a great way to dent your rims also.

Nice video and nice topic though. I went for some gravel action 2 weeks ago with my 1190 (T - yes, street model with Heidenau K60 tyres) and had everything - sand, gravel, mud, ice and snow. There were 2 situations where I missed a TKC80 or something. One of them was a snow field ;-) So, tyres are always a compromise - I chose the Heidenaus over the TKC80 because I had to ride about 1000 KM's to get to the gravel action over some alpine mountain passes. I surely would have mounted some real knobies on the wheels when I would have been closer to the offroad fun ;)

Adam, I really could use your advise. I'm buying my first adventure bike at the beginning of the next season. I've been waiting for this for years now. The question is: is it possible to learn off-road riding on a big heavy adventure bike, or I should buy a light weight cross bike to start getting into it? I love what watching the way you ride, one day I want to be able to do the same.

Hey David I'm learning myself my first offroad bike is a 275kg VFR1200X Its just a steeper learning curve. Spend the money on the right protective grear for yourself and the bike and go for the Nobby tyres. You'll have much more confidence. And spend as much $$$ as you can on coaching.

While I agree with you on tyres in tough terrain most owners of such adventure bikes do not use them as a dirt bike, probably more like 95% street riding and 5% off road (meaning gravel roads). Most even would not reach 5% off road. For such riders I'd never recommend a real off road tyre as it will compromise safety and handling on road significantly. Street-oriented dual sport tyres like Pirelly Scorpion Trail or Michelin Anakee III in combination with today's advanced electronics aren't nearly as bad on gravel roads as most people think. Actually, in the dry at least I have never felt the need for knobby tyres on gravel roads on neither KTM 1190 nor BMW R1200GS. Most people cannot make a 1190 look like a Freeride 350 over such logs. Joe Average clearly is not ARiemann1 ;-)
@DKluvTALZY6 жыл бұрын
or you could just do what serious 4x4 drivers do and buy 2 sets. big muddies for off roading and smaller/smoother tyres for road driving.
@DKluvTALZY6 жыл бұрын
especially cause a bike only has 2 wheels. buy 2 back rims and 2 front fit one set with road tyres and the other with off road tyres and switch whenever you need them.
@DKluvTALZY6 жыл бұрын
if a 4x4 guy can afford 8 rims and 4 mud tyres (usually $300-$400ea) plus some road tyres (usually $200-$300ea) then a offroad biker should easily be able to afford to do this as the vehicle is cheaper in general etc.
@DKluvTALZY6 жыл бұрын
+ you'll find in the long run its cheaper as you're not using your offroad tyres for road driving and wearing through a set every 6 months. im not sure about bikes but 4x4 offroad tyres have terrible handling and overall life expectancy when driven on the road so by buying another set of rims and tyres for road driving you're actually saving money because you're not having to buy new offroad tyres every few months, the offroad ones last forever and road tyres being driven on roads last forever so you save $ in the end its the the intial big chunk it costs that puts people off.
@DKluvTALZY6 жыл бұрын
also have to keep in mind he did say he was setting this bike up as an offroader and wants to spend as little time on bitumen as possible so in this case a spare set of road tyres and rims isnt necessary but if you do say an even amount of road driving and offroading defs invest in 2 different sets of tyres. same goes for if you are going to rarely touch dirt then you wont really need 2 sets.

Hi! I'm interested in this as well. The 1190 has a Tubeless setup and I can't find the Pirelly Rally in Tubeless for the sizes of the 1190R (21 front & 18 rear). So my guess is he put tubes on those rims...but maybe he can confirm this? Cheers!

Yes Marc, tubes fitted with the Scorpion Rally tyres. We like the idea of being able to fix a flat with conventional methods ... spare tubes and bike pump!
