It's not that KTM are in trouble; the R is and was always intended to be a focused niche model with the S as the wider volume seller. The intention seems to be that most riders would go for/be best suited to an S, and only buy an R if they have a really really specific reason to (in my case I didn't want electronic suspension). As a result the production numbers for the R are way way lower, I queried my 3 nearest dealers (southern UK) and the story was the same - they were allocated a less than half a dozen R's vs 30 or 40 S's for the entire year. R test rides have therefore been more or less impossible to get, whereas pretty much every dealer in the country appeared to have at least one S demo available at any time. Having ridden both, it seems like you might be better off on the S, the smaller wheels and lower suspension give it the agility you're craving along with stability at higher speed. I'm not sure I have any faith in BMW driveshafts - the final drive on my 1200GSA shat itself twice in my ownership. It also let me down with separate FPR and EWS issues. By comparison the Multistrada that followed it never failed to get me where I was going; what is the world coming to when the Italians build the more reliable machine?! So far (touch wood), my 2022 1290SAR is being equally well behaved.

Thanks for your confirming perspective on the GS - I've seen photos of failed shaft drive linkages on the 1250 GS, and living in Florida, with it's merciless corrosion, that was a deal breaker for me. From what I understand, BMW (inexplicably) doesn't lubricate them properly. I'm frustrated now because I don't like the early reports on the new Tiger 1200 either - scraping early on leans, not enough adjustable range on the stiffer side of the suspension, not enough usable power on the low end, an annoying catch in the on-throttle, some fairing glitches.

Thanks a lot for describing that. I was very carefully reading whenever you were mentioning R or S as where I live, the story was reversed this year (2022) and many dealers had the R version (from this video) and none except one in the whole country had an S. Same with stock - in the place where I got to eventually ride the S, there were like 4 R versions and 2 S ones which appeared strange to me. Clearly this place is very different in terms of KTM's expectations. Not sure they're correct though and I'd say that I feel that they're not. Not cool hearing about BMW's driveshafts. I'm hoping that the scale of them failing isn't large but one the other hand, there's so many GS bikes on the roads that bad stuff happens in a largest number in general I suppose. All the best with your R!

It was mentioned under your other video, but here goes again: You are not meant to press the indicator switch to cancel on this KTM. To cancel, pull down. Yes, it is different, but it works. Also, it has auto cancel indicators, so they turn off after a few seconds of riding on their own anyway.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the hint. I've already checked it after those remarks in KTM's user's manual and it states that one is supposed to press the button just like in all bikes. What pressing and pushing it down does is it extends the time of it being in fact pushed and this tends to do the trick. I've tested I think all possible ways of pressing and pushing a few weeks ago once I got to a Super Adventure in the S version and the issue was persisting during me riding. I'll share the video from my tests. The final solution is to press and hold instead of just pressing it quickly - it fails to register otherwise. In other words - it does indeed not work properly in my opinion.

@@VToldsMotoShow and @MrFerisko both bring up good points. While the flagship 1290 Super Adventure does have self-canceling turn signals, and the manual cancelling works if you press the button longer - it really should work with a quick press. I don't think it's a "Recall" worthy issue, but that the turn signal cancel is brought up so often by so many people shows that it is an issue.

Z drugiej strony jesli to maja być nowe motocykle z salonu, to oba maja gwarancje, więc to bez większego znaczenia w pierwszych latach.

Jeżdżę raczej mało (3 dzieci, praca, życie, wiadomo) więc chyba to przeważa szale - emocje jakie daje ktm. Co do dźwięku to 100% się zgadzam, honda ma świetny fabrycznie, a do ktm'a dziś robiłem przegląd i obiecująco wyglądają Arrow, Vinci i dominator. W piątek lub sobotę jadę do Łodzi (sam jestem spod Białegostoku, czarna dziura salonów Moto, wszystkie daleko, po 200km), tam e salonie mają na test i ktma i hondę- postanowiłem, że wtedy będzie podjęta decyzja. I have the 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R and I think this turn signal indicator switch is a problem also especially when you just came from the turn and people in front of you think you are turning into an intersection that you are coming up on and cut in front of you while you are trying to concentrate on needing to hold down the indicator switch for a certain period of time then you need to stop holding it down to concentrate on the next situation that could be an accident, outside that the beast is an awesome mile munching machine and the power is so addicting! Hi dude! I'm the owner of a Brand New 1290 Super Adventure S '22 since october and I have to tell you that you're right. The indicators switch works so badly that you have to push it more than twice to turn them off. But suddenly it works perfectly during one or two times.Then, it continues working badly. Otherwise, my S version goes so well in twisty mountain roads... I come from a Kawasaki Z900 bike and I thought it was agile and fast in these kind of roads. Now I ride with my KTM I can do the same roads extremely much faster now. I suppose that the R version is less agile because of the lack of electronic help compared with the S. Nice review.

I actually have spent some time with Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 once it was first launched years ago but it was such a long time that I cannot say much more than it resembled an R1200GS at that time, just perhaps not being as well-engineered in most areas. The second thing I remember is that my knees were getting stuck against the fairings around a fuel tank due to it being too close to the rider. My knees aren't particularly long but a flat surface was limiting my space there - very strange actually. Not sure how much of help this is but since this bike is no longer in production, I bet we'd do best by waiting for a new generation is there's going to be any in the future.

@@VToldsMotoShow Thank you for reading & taking time to respond. I think the Super Tenere is still in production as of 2022 and have made some updates since its first production date back in 2012 (?). I have not seen a bad review on this bike and it always gets high accolades from owners and reviewers. I think the only negative comment is the ST is under-powered but I think it can be flashed for an extra 20hp. The ST has all the features an adventure bike requires...electronic suspension, cruise control, shaft drive, VG wind protection, rugged & a million mile motor. Thanks again for all your great video's!

@@hrmacdonald4471 I had a Super Tenere for 6 months before I couldn't take it anymore. Painfully top-heavy so that it was almost unworkable off-road, and it's minimal agility disappeared altogether once loaded up at touring weight. And yes, power delivery was relaxed to the point of almost being a little sluggish. It's a mystery to me why Yamaha never improved on the ST in any serious way, which doomed it among the evolving competition from other ADV bikes. It makes me wonder (hope, actually) that Yamaha has decided to re-introduce it with a more powerful version of the Tenere 700 - lighter and more off-road oriented than the ST we've known.

If you add the rally Seat the seated position is quite perfect. I quess it’s a bit off a trade off depending if you’re off-roading or not. And yes there is less wind protection but it’s still more off road focused than any other big adv bike. My owner experience is quite different than yours I’ve had a small coolant leak and that’s really it. I’ve put 6000km on the bike and I couldn’t be happier. Bear in mind that electronic hiccups are commonly caused by battery issues, I’m pretty confident that KTM will sort the bike out for if need be. Of course that can be a very different experience depending on where you live. Just remember even Honda has warranty claims ask me how I know😅

It is good to here you mention reliability and the problems you added , this tells me this is a genuine review, from all the information I have gathered, the KTM 1290 S and R are fun bikes but can't be classed as serious tourers because you simply can't trust them , poor reliability is just not acceptable on a bike you could be at the back of beyond on !! You could also be stuck for dealers, great fun bike for local riding but rider beware if you intend long distance!! Thats why I bought a 1250GS instead but in all honesty if you are doing real big touring , my advice is get an Africa Twin Adventure sport but get a better seat , you'll go wherever you want and you'll come home on the same bike 😉👍 Tbh when Honda cop themselves on and put a bigger engine in the Africa Twin and maybe shaft drive , it will be over for the rest 🤔

I believe you're summarized it well - great fun as long as it all works fine. Up to some point, if it's a new bike, you're protected by warranty but still, if something fails and you're 1000 kilometers from home, it's a headache. For touring I'd go with a GS too. For rides around - KTM will be great. Thanks for sharing all that! I'm not a fan of an Africa Twin actually, so will skip that part :). Cheers!

You say you don't like the Africa Twin??? I will definitely be going back to it lol But they really do need to sort that seat , its just not acceptable for a long distance tourer but you just can't deny Hondas bikes are reliable and there's nothing I would want more when in the middle of nowhere than that legendary reliability. Totally right with the colors - Rally in Tiger in a Matt Khaki (green with a white frame) looks sick! It seems a bit weird to me as colors matter in motorcycles and many of us would like to go crazy and therefore not look like everybody else. Heck, who knows what stands behind this strategy. As for the indicator switch in Super Adventure, the user's manual says to just push it like in all other bikes. I've tested that a lot more a few weeks later on an S version that I rode and it turns out that it works as intended but... you've got to press and hold it for a moment. Otherwise, no matter what you do, it doesn't register being presses and hence the problem.

I've had the 2018 1290R since new {so 5 yrs now} & I'll chime in., For reference purposes; I'm 192 cm & 110 kilo, mid 40's, not first motorcycle but first adventure bike.. This is what I have noticed between the older & newest version The switch gear is easier to use & less cluttered on the previous version= 2017-2021 The quickshifter is slightly easier to use in running shoes on the 2022 model, Maybe even sandals. The seat height is much higher & the footpegs are lower on the previous version= 2017-2021 You do have to experiment & play around with the suspension setting= on my bike there is chart 📈 with recommendations on the inside left forks passageway against the plastic fairing, this is also the location to hold the key fob if its battery has died or the spare fob, there is a target marked Chain tension seems to be very critical on my bike.. everything works out alot better when adjusted just slightly tighter than the sticker says {yea, be careful not to overdo it though..) GIVI aftermarket windscreen was probably my first modification The 2017-2021 model has a smaller exhaust muffler & thus the Acro aftermarket offering in titanium is well.. nicer than the newest version Try running the tires at 40 PSI {both front & rear) What they've done with this newest version "2022+" is taken a page from their experiences with the 790/890 platforms { "a bike made for a larger percentage of the population's average physical size" } & that would likely increase global sales in this model= it is possibly no longer made for very tall people anymore.. { I don't believe anyone who weighs 75 kilo should be trying to man handle this machine., But what do I know.. anyways.. & That about sums it up..

KTM is a “new” brand in the global market that made a nice path of evolution but there are a lot of little inconvenient flaws that they have to address until they can compete with BMW or even with some Japanese manufacturers in what concerns to reliability matters. @@VToldsMotoShow hi V-told🙌 My change of bike has two main reasons: The first is that the bike has some minor electronic bugs that were becoming worrying issues because the technical assistance wasn’t right for the machine, brand and price cost at all. This wasn’t acceptable. The second reason is that I tried the Bmw S 1000 XR, 2021 model and found the bike Flawless. Besides, if you buy a new BMW, you have almost in every part of the world a competent technical assistance for it. I’m not a mechanic or software engineer, so I value a lot reliability of the brands in what concerns to service after purchasing. I felt not secure going on a long trip with the SDGT. So what the hell was I doing with a bike of those characteristics? I don’t have anymore the age or desire to buy something expensive just to show. I buy a big bike so I can use it for the purpose it was meant or I simply don’t buy it at all. My conclusion is that KTM is on the right path but they have to go a long way until they can match with some motorcycle brands like BMW or the Japanese brands. I say this about KTM but my opinion is the same about Italian and British brands. They lack on customer assistance outside their countries Territory. They’re not worldwide brands yet. They pretend to be but they aren’t there yet. And I’m talking only concerning the EU market. Be well my friend and keep on bringing content about this machines we love. I am more interested in the S, but the dealer only had a demo R. I was thrown back by how unstable the steering felt on the HWY at 110kmh. It felt very loose, any push on the steering and it wobbled scarily. I accelerated in 6th to pass a car and got head shake in the steering. In contrast, getting back on my VFR1200X, a push on the steering at speed and it settled back down very quickly. I even tried this on my 701 at the same speed and that felt very stable despite the 21inch front wheel. I was very surprised. Something in the geometry I guess. Also didn't like the seat. I felt it made me slide into the tank. In contrast, the S on the showroom floor seemed to have a very comfy seat that is nice and flat. Also agree with the colours, the R is really nice, but the S's are boring. Going to try the Triumph next.

I've seen some vids about that too. Not sure with the final conclusion and recommendations are. Some mention tires, some I think oil in the front fork (not sure about this one though).

The reliability doesn’t matter if it’s under warranty? Sure, if you’re not using the bike as it’s designed snd you’re not in the middle of nowhere, and then can deal with the issue being diagnosed as a warranty issue, if not already, and then the parts to come, and the work to be done. You have a very self-centric perspective on these bikes, but we could vs.ue your reviews more if you were a bit less self-centric to your personal riding style and limited riding.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow Жыл бұрын
Everyone is self-centric and that's why people value reviews. If you're looking for non-self-centric information, then you should head to manufacturer's website or a data sheet. If they've got to take your bike for a repair, then fight for a replacement for that time.

I wanted to buy ktm 1290 advanture . beautiful bike for long trips.Then i found out many owners after only 6000 km have problems with fuel pump , battery.electronic warnings (can't start engine) The most parts off the bike is made in china,to cut the price of the bike.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 6 ай бұрын
Those price cuts don't seem to be very effective though. They've just raised the prices of the 1290s by approx. 5% with no apparent improvements to the bikes themselves.

Scottoiler; YES! I have it on my 2 bikes; have not had to tighten my chain on my bikes with 7,000 miles on both because of constant lubing. But why get it from KTM?? they already nickle and dime every tiny molecule. Buy it from Amazon and install it yourself. Also, just put regular synthetic oil in it, no need to buy the Scottoiler special oil; that's a bunch of bull (KTM-esque greedy mentality). HOWEVER; after this review, I know KTM will never be for me because of design defects, poor workmanship, greed, and reputation for being super unreliable.

Its interesting that you buy an offroad bike then proceed to complain about all of the things that make an offroad bike incredible. It is a street bike second.

It's not a dirt bike but a 160 horsepower, 240 kilogram monster on two wheels. No need to justify that statement and KTM themselves offer it on road tires. I'm not sure it's clear but this bike was rented by me from the dealer - it's not my own motorcycle but an example that I got to test.

Oh, this may be a too hardcore of a bike for me in terms of its focus on being sporty. At least that's what I'm thinking about it now without having ridden it. Thanks for the hint!

In fairness, you should probably qualify the comfort of the pegs with the fact that a ride more than an hour is a lot for you. That seems insane for me as an ADV rider, but it’s all subjective, but come on, everyone can ride an hour or two on a 600 with Woodcraft race pegs set to the highest position, so your statement means nothing.
