In the last video on my KTM 390 Adventure or KTM 390 ADV, if you prefer calling it that, I told you about a quick fix for the terrible low end - just swap out the front 15 tooth sprocket for a 14 tooth sprocket from the KTM Duke 250.
Not only does this mod cost almost nothing - Rs 250 for the sprocket - it improves the low speed rideability of the bike immensely.
Even if I take my hand off the throttle in the first gear, the bike keeps chugging along at 9 kmph, without stalling.
The bike also crosses speed breakers with ease in the second gear at low speeds now.
So, city rideability has definitely improved.
What has taken a bit of a hit is the highway fuel economy. Because now this engine is spinning faster to maintain the same speeds as the stock bike, I noticed a 10 per cent drop in the highway mileage.
I rode some 220 km yesterday - a very fast highway ride where we were averaging some 120-130 kmph for the most part, with occasional bursts upto 160 kmph, the motorcycle returned 27 kmpl. Which again is not bad at all. The stock bike I believe would have returned close to 29-30 kmpl at those speeds.
I am sure due to the shorter gearing, the city fuel economy will go up a bit though.
And for those who think we will lose out on a lot of top end, the bike still managed to hit 166 kmph without much of an effort. That's plenty for a person like me, at least.
My idea of the gearing on this bike is, if it can do 140 kmph all day and has another 20 kmph to overtake on the highway, I am okay with that.
I'll chose better city ability over outright top speed any day of the week.
