KTM 390 Adventure Gets Front Sprocket From Duke 250: Low End Issue Fixed

In the last video on my KTM 390 Adventure or KTM 390 ADV, if you prefer calling it that, I told you about a quick fix for the terrible low end - just swap out the front 15 tooth sprocket for a 14 tooth sprocket from the KTM Duke 250.
Not only does this mod cost almost nothing - Rs 250 for the sprocket - it improves the low speed rideability of the bike immensely.
Even if I take my hand off the throttle in the first gear, the bike keeps chugging along at 9 kmph, without stalling.
The bike also crosses speed breakers with ease in the second gear at low speeds now.
So, city rideability has definitely improved.
What has taken a bit of a hit is the highway fuel economy. Because now this engine is spinning faster to maintain the same speeds as the stock bike, I noticed a 10 per cent drop in the highway mileage.
I rode some 220 km yesterday - a very fast highway ride where we were averaging some 120-130 kmph for the most part, with occasional bursts upto 160 kmph, the motorcycle returned 27 kmpl. Which again is not bad at all. The stock bike I believe would have returned close to 29-30 kmpl at those speeds.
I am sure due to the shorter gearing, the city fuel economy will go up a bit though.
And for those who think we will lose out on a lot of top end, the bike still managed to hit 166 kmph without much of an effort. That's plenty for a person like me, at least.
My idea of the gearing on this bike is, if it can do 140 kmph all day and has another 20 kmph to overtake on the highway, I am okay with that.
I'll chose better city ability over outright top speed any day of the week.
What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below.
And if you would like regular updates on this bike along with other bikes that I ride and customise, you can take a look at my Instagram channel here: / abhinavbhatt19

Hi Abhinav, You are the best person to ask this question: Which one do you suggest for the low end engine knocking issue? The front 14 teeth 250duke's front sprocket or the 47 teeth rear sprocket from racecustoms? Which modification do you advice in terms of overall performance?
@950bolt
@950bolt Жыл бұрын
Great video!👍🏽There is another way to solve this issue which I did on my Duke 390 2015 model. Changed the rear sprocket to that of Duke 250. This increased the top end a bit but reduced the torque. Stock A/F ratio on this is insufficient to produce enough torque to drive a larger rear sprocket at low RPMs. This issue can be solved in two ways, increase torque by reducing front sprocket size or decrease torque by reducing rear sprocket size. Both work well. First one, what you have done here I felt gives a more aggressive change and is good for offroading. The second one seemed better for highway rides as it smoothened the torque curve throughout the rev range..

I did apx 120 kms yesterday from delhi to karnal and felt that the bike was being pushed back and not revving freely. Is it supposed to not freely rev to 10000 rpm even if the shift light settings are not enabled before crossing 1000 kms. Nice video informative video A. I test rode the adv and till 5th gear here are my observations for the speed for an upshift. Can you share the same info with the new 250 sprocket ? 1st : 1 to 19 kmph 2nd : 20 to 34 kmph 3rd : 35 to 45 kmph 4th : 46 to 60 kmph 5th : 60 + I am torn between choosing an interceptor and adv 390. Interceptor for being simpler in nature and for that beautiful refined engine but ktm for the longer travel suspension and the lightness and nimbleness. The Inter is heavier and may not have enough of wind protection as compared to the adv. The ktm has terrible low end. I do 70 per cent in city and 30 percent on the highways. Your feedback is much appreciated.
@abhinavbhatt
@abhinavbhatt 4 жыл бұрын
They both have their strengths. Very difficult to compare them. I love the Interceptor for the character it has - brings a smile to my face every time. But this KTM is really special. It is a sports bike in the guise of a touring bike. Best would be to ride them back-to-back and gauge which works better for you.
@jhetro123

This.., torn between these two, other than the suspension on the adv 390, is there any other advantage over the interceptor. The interceptor makes up for that in the looks alone. If I got the interceptor, would look into suspension upgrade to make it more of a scrambler and be done. I think that would be the best of both worlds.
