Slide back in the seat and ride in a tuck, screen works great then. It’s designed for rally racing and in that game you ride tucked in as as soon as the speeds go up. Wiring and hose routing can be a pain in the arse though and takes time and few goes to get it right, cable tie blocks help

I have the same bike and fairing, agree with what you have identified. However a warning to future buyers the USB device is poorly made, mine stopped working after 4 months when I queried the distributor ( I am in Australia) I was informed that it is not filled with resin which dampens the vibration and they break down! Not great for a bike that goes off road. I was able to purchase a rein filled USB, so if buying the fairing get them to put the better one in.

Thanks for that useful video Codger. I am trying to make up my mind on one of these at the moment. As the replacement screens are available, have you considered cutting about 2 inches off the top? Oddly you might find that improves the comfort. Most people incorrectly believe that the way to get rid of turbulence is to add height to the screen but there is a lot more to it than that. The most effective screen I have ever used on any bike was the standard KTM 690 mini screen but raised up on a bracket about 4 inches higher than standard and mounted vertically, NOT the KTM way on the headlight shroud. This took all the pressure off my chest without any buffeting at all and the air was so "clean" behind it I tested it by lighting a BIC lighter at 70 MPH and it lit easily and the flame was dead vertical. I even found it perfect when riding up the West Coast of the USA (after completing the TAT) from LA to Canada doing 90 mph all the way and I am 6'2" and broad shouldered. At the end of any ride my jacket was always totally free of dirt and flies but the outside edge of my arms and rest of my gear were filthy. Proving just how good tiny screen mounted in the RIGHT POSITION can be.Now here is the kicker, if you examine that KTM mini screen it has a 'return' on it, a reverse flip spoiler along the top edge. That I am convinced is it's aerodynamic secret. It would not be difficult to construct a replica of this out of a thin strip of alloy and bolt it to the Rade garage screen after cutting it down, or indeed before doing so. Adding height to a screen just looks terrible and further compromises the off road capability. It is not really the answer.
@CodgerBiker3 жыл бұрын
I love the lights, the GPS bar, the looks. It really finishes the bike for me. So much so I've stopped looking for another unicorn (shock!). But I agree with you, more height can mean more turbulence, at the very least more heat on a hot day. Ideally screens should be adjustable as everybody seems to have different expeience, body variation, expectation etc. I tried a small spoiler and it did help, but not enough for me to keep it. So I've just got used to it as most days it is fine for my kind of riding. Have now done a couple thousand miles I would not want to lose it. 👍

I looked at Rade for the 890 but several honest reviews like this put me off. I guess the reason that the Rebel X and Aurora fairings are so expensive is because they don't seem to have the shortcomings of this one. I see Daresbury lab in the background, I used to work in there regularly and fiddlers, I didn't recognize the roads without the usual traffic !
@CodgerBiker3 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for the 890 version. The 690 version, whilst not perfect, has proven to be very good for my purposes, especially the GPS rail, Lights, etc. And I really like the way it looks. I could not imagine the bike without it now. They just released a new version with carbon fibre tower and guides for cables I think. So I think they listen to feedback and evolve it. At the price I'd say it was best compromise. Not perfect, but overall I'm happy with it. They offer customer upgrade kit too, which is good. I have no affiliation with them, or anyone else. I say what I find, if it helps others, so much the better, but just my experience/opinion👍 Yes that is Daresbury 👍
@adamhrachowina91193 жыл бұрын
@@CodgerBiker yes for the price point it fits the bill for both the 690/890 and looks good too . I'm going to hold off though until I can afford the Rebel X for the big bike, just because the tower sections can be replaced individually if/when I crash, rather than have to replace the whole thing.

It might be possible that eliminating the side panels reduces the buffeting/turbulence, because more air would be allowed right behind the screen. How about an experiment? Are the side panels actually needed for stability, or are they only cosmetic?

So here in the Midwest USA its a 1000 mile ride to get to the mountains where I like to go to ride. In you opinion, better with the Rade fairing or without for a long high-speed ride like that? Thanks
@CodgerBiker2 жыл бұрын
Not fudging it but depends on so many factors with any screen. I prefer the looks. The lights. The GPS layout. However there is buffeting. It takes the blast off your chest, but can make it worse on your helmet depending on wind, your height, speed, your tolerance, helmet etc. It isn't perfect. I tried a spoiler, but it didn't make much difference. I have done 300 mile days with not too much problem, I prefer it to no screen over all.

Great video. I’ve been considering rallye kits for my 690. I assume you were also looking at the rebel rallye kit although very expensive. I thought the wiring looked neater on the rebel and more configurable? What made you choose the radegarage??
@CodgerBiker2 жыл бұрын
Hello. Well you nailed it really, price. Also political situation here made acquiring stuff problematic. Rade had good communication and delivered as promised. I believe the new K5 deals with cables a little better. Though I've had no problems. I also liked the integrated damper mount provided. You get a lot for the price but I agree other systems might look better. I've no complaints after 18 months 👍

Hello. I will do a follow up next month on how it went. Basically I would fit it again. The screen is aimed for offroad as well as onroad so it is a compromise. It is well clear of my eyeline, and obscures nothing 👍

@@CodgerBiker Thanks so much for your reply. the 690/701 is not really a motorway bike (not that you can't ride one there, but there are much better bikes for motorway use)... given that bike designs are a zero sum game, a fairing designed to be good on the motorway would be less than ideal for what (IMHO) is the best usage for this bike... offroad ADV. Love your indicator choice... I have the F5 and the included indicators are basically illegal here in the States (would be unsafe to rely on). Another note... the new F5 has MUCH better cable management... I wonder if you can retrofit any of that onto the F4.
@CodgerBiker2 жыл бұрын
I have to ride the motorway to get to the lanes. It works fine. Much better on lanes than my Africa Twin or 790adv. Best compromise I have found so far, especially since I fitted tubeless wheels. There is a K5 'upgrade' kit. But so far I can live with this. I changed the side bolts which leaves more cable space, for now I am happy. There is no one bike does all, but this is close. Cheers. Thanks for watching. 👍

Good point but damn I love both the moto/dirt look of a visor bill but more than that I love it when riding coming around a corner and suddenly the blinding SUN iss in my eyes! I mean I dio have an internal flip down sun shield but it's that sudden blinding mid turn issue where it is so nice to just dip visor enough to block the rays! But yes the wind at 70 80 mph like to tear off your head with that off-road visor!

I bought my 690 that already had a Rade garage fairing on it and could not get rid of it fast enough & went for a rebel tower .. Rade's build quality is awful everything from the micro screws used to the lights used you can just see it is a cosmetic more than anything else .. people I think buy it because it is the cheaper option out there in rally towers builders ... but it definitely shows and you get what you pay for ...
@CodgerBiker2 жыл бұрын
I've ridden with it for 18 months or so and wouldn't have the bike without it. That notwithstanding, they have improved the K5 taking into account criticisms from customers. Shows they listen, but doesn't really help me. Yes you get what you pay for, no doubt about that. But I have to stick to a budget, and it has done what I needed so far 👍

Yes I know there are sort of two definitions for the term "enduro" that date back to late 60's and 70's when Japanese companies sold a gaziilion dual purpose bike THEY termed "enduros" Sort of like vehicle manufacturers using names of big races for models like "Daytona" or "Baja" or "Dakar" etc etc which suggests to the ignorant these vehicles would be suitable which of course they rarely have much if any potential at all to even be kitted for such...Oh yeah and the latest of same kind of thing is adding "Rally" to a model like like Honda CRF300L "Rally" version.....lol AS IF someone will buy such and enter next Dakar rally
