If only you'd told me back in 1977 when I started riding. I could have saved 47 wasted years. Damn! 😉
Well since you asked; I would never buy an "off road" bike because I don't ride off road. Apart from that they are all pig ugly, the Desert X being possibly the exception. Some might be great to ride but I couldn't put up with the looks walking through my garage. A bit like choosing a girlfriend, you wouldn't choose a minger if you had the chance of an attractive one 🙂. So for me it would have to be the Norton. It is also very nicely made, well the ones build here by TVS in Birmingham.

@CodgerBiker4 күн бұрын
Looking at the video, (5.18) I'd say 5000 revs in 3rd is just about 40mph. Assuming gearing etc is same. 6000 revs in 3rd is about 50mph. 5900 revs in 4th about 60mph. According to DrJ, who once followed on his Tiger 850 Sport, the speedo is quite accurate (excepting needle wobble of course). 👍

Rear wheel pointing left? Another possible cause for the handlebars to point left could be the rear wheel is pointing left. The two wheels must be parallel to run straight but if the rear wheel is out of alignment then the bike will crab slightly down the road. Try adjusting the right rear wheel chain adjuster back towards the rear of the machine. I had a 1979 TS150 before I left for the US and it was a great little bike. Nice to see your luggage solution - German racks for the MZ's hang down above the rear light, unlike the horizontal UK luggage racks. About seven years ago I was in Dresden and in the DDR Museum there was a used TS125 with an aftermarket full fairing that was just superb.
@CodgerBiker8 күн бұрын
Cheers, another thing to try. I think the rear wheel is aligned, but no harm in trying. All that chain covering is good for chain life, but makes alignment problematic. I do though think the wheels are aligned, but the forks are not quite. I’ll loosen them off and see. If that don’t work, move to the rear wheel. Appreciated. 👍👍
@georider82227 күн бұрын
@@CodgerBiker A quick look is to see the distance each side between the rear tyre and the inner surface of the swing arm. I would be interested to hear how you get on, I see you have the Luxus version like I did (mine was red). Low bars, twin clocks, fork gaiters, and chrome tank panels - plus alloy levers, alloy rims, bar end mirror, and a comprehensive tool kit. All for 283 pounds in 1979. My compliments to you for keeping your machine as near standard and also for your interesting channell.

Thanks again. Nice to share a bit of nostalgia. I bought mine from a guy, about the age I am now. He'd retired and returned to biking, but did not have the nerve for it. He sold it me very cheap, it had been in the paper for a few weeks. When I told him it was for work, he gave me his new helmet, gloves and waterproof suit. I only expected it to last a few months. But, as you can see, MZs never die. It'll be going long after me. 😉👍👍

@Neonthon8 күн бұрын
Never had a problem with my BVF, the problems you're facing aren't really the fault of the carb. The problem with throttle input under steering angle is a result of the cable routing, pulling it one way and the other is manipulating the throttle cable itself and either lifting or dropping the slide, and an incorrect mixture is resulting in a rich condition and sooted plugs. There are plenty of resources for 2T carb tuning online which will help you get the best out of the bike regardless of carb fitted :)
@CodgerBiker8 күн бұрын
Up until last month I would have agreed with you. The BVF is my original carb I’ve had on the bike for 40 years. I tried a cheap Chinese thing and binned it, went back to the BVF. It’s not a routing issue with the cable, I’ve tried every which way including the original repair manual. Its same cable, same routing with the Mikuni. But I think, due to my experience with this Mikuni, it’s a weakened return spring in the BVF carb. Hardly surprising after 40 years use. I also think the needle is worn and that the ‘choke’ enrichment was leaking, causing plugs to die and excessive smoke. Being me I will restore it in time. But the kits are very expensive as the best ones seem to come from Germany. However, this bike now does run and idle better than it ever did, even when new. Having an extra adjustment definitely helps at idle. In the 80s if it cut out I just got off and kicked it to life. I lived in the countryside. The pace of life was slow. Hardly and traffic or traffic lights where I lived. In the city, nowadays, with fast accelerating electric cars, people not looking where they are going, it’s not healthy to have the bike cut out at the lights. Modern fuels don’t help. So I’m hoping this is E10 compliant and won’t deteriorate. So, yes I agree the BVF is fine, particularly at speed. But a bit of modernisation does not harm. Especially if it gives confidence in a city environment and keeps the bike viable. Cheers for watching. 👍👍

@@CodgerBiker One of the old tricks on the MZ was not to have a tick over as this reduces the surging when the throttle is closed when in gear and moving particularly when going down hill. However once at a stand still if you twisted the bars to the left it lifted the the slide slightly via tightening the cable and therby gave a tick over. I had a simular issue re the carb choke plunger rubber coming adrift and simular issues!
@CodgerBiker7 күн бұрын
As I said. I rode this bike 12,000 miles in 80s. It never bothered me. I'm just happier with it now in modern traffic. The MZ rubber might be prone to E-fuel. Can't be sure as the choke is all original and after 40 years (30 in a shed) I guess deterioration is natural. I'll restore it in time... 👍

Lovely little bikes. They really respond to decent tyres...Metzeler an excellent choice. For the handlebars,loosen everything...fork top-nuts,pinch bolts,wheel spindle...the lot. Wiggle the bars till they are straight...tighten everything except the spindle....pull the front brake on full and keep it held as you tighten the wheel spindle nut...this centres the brake shoes. I used to get 60 on the Great Cambridge Rd regularly on my TSs and my ES....tons of smoke till the exhaust got hot enough to clean itself then it ran like a dream.
