KTM 690 Enduro Sidestand with Foot - Tilt Angles and Raising Problem

November 11, 2019 - Sidestand with Foot - Tilt Angles and Raising Problems. The engineer in me wanted to do a test to measure the impact of adding a sidestand foot or shoe, used to increase stability on soft ground, to a KTM 690 Enduro. A 2015 and 2019 690 were measured. Why? If you have to lean too far over to the right, especially with a top bag or dog, you might fall the rest of the way over, in your efforts trying to lift the sidestand.

I have difficulty raising my kickstand cause my foot just has difficulty grabbing it to flip it back...I finally added a protrusion with a little plastic ball so I have something easier to "grab" with my boot..helped a lot!

I have a 2019, and find the kickstand is too tall even without adding a foot, I meant to remove the stand this winter cut a inch or so out of it above the foot and have a welder attach the ends together, but completely forgot about it until today when I viewed this video! Love your content, and am envious of your dog's willingness to go riding, wish my cat would tolerate the wind as well as Deacon does!

Thank you! 3/4 of an inch without the foot and an inch with a foot. I have a TIG welder so its easy for me. There is a straight section in the tubing about 2 inches up that is a perfect place.

@@telerover this is probably obvious, but make sure you remove the kickstand from the bike before welding pieces together, could cause electrical problems if not. I'd love to know how this worked for you once you've done it, good luck.

Hey Mike, Nice eval. I've had trouble with my 690 kickstand too when I need to raise it. Same goes on my 1190 but I have an aftermarket foot on it. I like it though when I stop on dirt or gravel. I had a nice 120 mile fall Texas loop this morning with my riding buddy Lewis. 45 degrees so "Colorado Layers" were required. Good to see you again, even if only on video. Ken Frazier

I am also thinking about this but at 1.5 inches shorter, I worry that the SM kickstand may be too short. Is your Enduro lowered or standard?

Hi Mike & Deacon, just saw your latest video while in my basement exercise room. I can definitely relate to tilt angle challenge with tall bike. My experience is this happens when the kickstand is essentially too long or steep angle. On my F800GS if I crank on the preload knob and rain the bike up in rear, I can effectively shorten the kickstand distance to ground. So it can swing out of the way. Unfortunately I am too short to keep cranking the preload up. As you noted, it also messes with the suspension sag. I am thinking the best solution is to shorten the kickstand every so slightly or if you can bend the kickstand out about halfway down. Kind of like the big GS bikes. Adding a kickstand foot only makes the the kickstand longer. Oh, I noticed some folks weld a notch or put a Ram ball mount near the bottom half of kickstand to make it easier finding it with the heal of your boot. A definite good idea for mod. Thanks for this good review Mike, I'm also in Colorado with a '19 690, I'm a little shorter than you with stock suspension, so already on my tippy toes, what I also find is that if I pull off the side of the road, the road/shoulder/asphalt to dirt drop-off on the right side typically exacerbates the issue. I plan to lower my suspension, then either get the SMC side stand or have a friend with a welder cut/lower mine. Often I'll be leaning as far as my left toe can push, while my right toe is in the air still and can't get the side stand up at all. I' have to slide off the seat to the right, but then can't reach the side stand very well at all. I think you used a Kouba Link, how is that working for you? I heard other people say you need to lower the bike in the suspension.

Lowering it via suspension mods is better than doing it with a kouba link. I'm still stock. If you haven't changed anything by April, I will be home and can weld your side stand for you.

Does anybody make half inch shorter kickstand. I would like to put a foot on the kickstand. Obviously on sand it just wants to go straight in and fall over. So I'm wondering does anybody make an aftermarket kickstand for the bike with a wider shoe

I plan on cutting mine down 3/4 inch this week. Its easy enough for a regular welding shop. I have a metal cutting bandsaw and a TIG welder from my Battlebot days, so for me its a piece of cake. I've done at least three for friends. I would do it for you but I am heading for Mexico soon. Are you in Colorado?

I had Vanasche cut 1.5” of my stand and made a big difference. The weld and powder coating work is phenomenal.
