I feel a deep empathy for people that had a bike that that suffered these issues in earlier model years. I hope you'll get the issue sorted or compensated for, as KTM seems to finally be doing. I've put 15,000 miles (25,000 km) on my 23' 890R in the last year with no issues. My trip last summer alone was 10,000 miles, camping off the bike for 4 months. I've ridden over many mountain ranges and deserts with her in the US and the bike has been amazing! Death Valley, jeep roads over the Rockies in Colorado, Baja Mexico and everything in between. I can't imagine having a bike as capable as this for the terrain that i've put it through. This is my first KTM. I had japanese bikes for the last 42 years. I know that there have been issues that KTM is finally addressing after much frustration. I just felt the need to add my voice that my bike has been mind blowingly amazing and that they are not all swiss cheese cams waiting to strand you somewhere, There have been a lot of loud voices, and maybe for good reason, considering their dissatisfaction from KTM's response to the very real issues with earlier models. But I hope that they will get past this issue as the bike is so uniquely capable of being such a great all round world traveler. As a side note: I brought my bike to Solid Performance in PA which does the suspension work on Chris Birch's bike. They did a valve adjustment and inspection on my bike at 13,000 miles, partly because I became concerned about camshaft wear read about on the forums. I was told the top end was in perfect condition and the valves were all nearly in spec. Bonus, thye serviced my Wp suspension and dialed it in for my riding style and weight. I ride this bike hard and often get her wet over my boots doing water crossings. I treat her good and do good maintenance to keep her happy. This is the best off road/tour the country/take a trip down to mexico on dirt roads/do it all motorcycle I've ever owned. Whatever you ride, get out and do it more often. It's easy to couch surf. Turn off the tube and get out there. Life is for the living...

KTM is 3 billion in debt. They aren't taking care of anything, nor will they
@Project_789T18 күн бұрын
It's big business money for sure...VW are €285 Billion in debt....so €3 Billion is a drop in the Ocean. One tip is to buy some KTM shares while they're low...mine are up 124% just now...nothing like doubling your money ;>

Done over 500 miles on mine now and still going great 👍🏻 thanks for the mention 🙂 look forward to seeing how yours goes. I’m getting mine remapped next month to see what difference that makes as I still have the 790 ECU fitted

I've seen that same failure on KTM 500 pistons, two now. I always suspected a lean condition/detonation from open aftermarket exhaust without any fuel map changes.
@Project_789T22 күн бұрын
Thanks for the info, agree definitely looks like that sort of damage but we do have pretty good quality fuel here in the UK (95+) so I don't think that was the problem. Running richer with the PCV maps also on a Akra (w/baffle) slip on and the cat. Some have said possible small coolant leak from the head gasket may cause a hot spot on the edge of the piston. Or it could have been self inflicted with my right wrist....

En mi Ktm 790 adv S 2022 (Argentina) rompí los dos pistones como te paso a ti (en mi caso también cilindros y las válvulas tuvieron que ser reemplazados) Te consulto: Que programa de Power Commander V tenías instalado? Advence Ignition? Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷
@Project_789TАй бұрын
@tincho1979Ай бұрын
@ gracias por la información. Yo tenia ese mismo mapa en mi 790. Mi problema fue combustible de bajo octanaje. Mucho éxitos con el proyecto. 👍🏻 Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷

The guy who looked after my last 3 KTMs always told me never to use the KTM recommended MOTOREX oil as it’s like water for an engine. Anyone else receive the same advice? He said Shell or Castrol .
@Project_789TАй бұрын
Yea heard lots about various oils over the years.

So in regards to the suspension. How do you like those rally cartridges? Was looking to do the same upgrade . are they still compliant on the road, can they be dialed in well and are they just as good at the tough off-road work? I have one of the new 790's 5k so far its been amazing
@Project_789T21 күн бұрын
Big improvement over the standard none adjustable cartridges. Good range of compression and rebound adjustment. No problems on the road. My advice would be use a good suspension specialist who can help you set them up.

Hi, you probably have one, but if not I have full printed workshop manual for 890 Adv you could have.
@Project_789T2 ай бұрын
Thanks, I have the 790 Adv and the 890 Duke R which covers all I need, I think 🤔
@justmyself10002 ай бұрын
Since both the Adventure and the Duke R have the same engine same Cams and throttle body...I wonder what was done to give the Duke R 15 more hp while still matching the torque of the Adventure?
@Project_789T2 ай бұрын
I expect it's all done with fuel delivery, intake size and mapping, torque is higher on the adv, so that's the trade off with less bhp.
@mattzobian2 ай бұрын
All things the same, if you enable an engine to rev higher (via better valve control, fuel/air flow, etc) you can get higher hp for the same amount of 'peak' torque.

Hi I’m following as going through the cam shaft problem and have considered Buying another engine and making it more bomb proof with mods as I like the bike. How much did you pay for the duke unit. Thanks
@ecosse_adv2 ай бұрын
Hi Thomas, I managed to get it for £1350.
@SuperAnthony19822 ай бұрын
Often wondered what it would take to upgrade my 790 duke to an 890. So are you still using the 790 ecu and map on the 890 motor?
@Project_789T2 ай бұрын
Yes 890 motor with all the original 790 ECU/Loom. I’m going to get the fuelling checked on a dyno, just to make sure that she’s getting the right amount of fuel using the standard 790 ECU. If not I’ll have it remapped accordingly. I feel this is the best way, as otherwise you may be into a lot of coding for keys/ecu etc. unless you had a complete 890 Adv donor bike and it’s parts available.
@SuperAnthony19822 ай бұрын
@Project_789T I guess the bike will just feel like it's had a rebore and uprated cams! A tune on the pcv should get you in the right ballpark. I think I've been over complicating things in my head thanks!
@NotUrAvgRiderАй бұрын
That’s owners manual is huge! Haha I know it’s just the perspective. Now that the funny part is over I have to be serious. GET RID OF THAT BIKE. The 890 engines are overheating prematurely for no explicable reason. I’ve seen it on 2 in person with my own eyes. 1 had 7k miles the other 13k miles. Both warped heads, one dropped a valve and smacked the piston.
@Project_789TАй бұрын
No point in getting rid, I’ve just put a new engine in it. Cheaper than a new bike 🤣🤣🤣
