I own a 990 Adventure R and that bike runs like a dream. Strong, huge torque, feels light and manageable unlike the BMWs or bigger KTMs, faster than you'll ever need on a paved road and goes anywhere with those massive 6 gallon tanks if you know how to ride it. If you want electronics just get a Garmin Zumo for couple hundreds and you'll have all you need.

back in 2014-2015 i rode a 990r, one of coolest bikes i ever rode to this day. However, it was a good 30-40kg heavier than my more utilitarian f800gs and felt it.

Today I rode my 990 Adv R 2009 through the Alps for 600 km...after 10 years I love it exactly like the first day...not, that's not right, I love it more than before! No way to sell my 990 to buy that "stuff"...look, engine, history, no electronic...the 990 R stays with me and the 790 stays at the dealer together with the 1090, 1190, 1290 ;-)

After becoming a 990 adventure owner,I can say with certainty that the 990 is better in every single aspect,EXCEPT fuel consumption. Long tours,check Comfy seat,check 2 up dirt riding,check Commanding position,check The only thing I wish it could have is a fuel indicator,but w/e,every time I hear my acrapovic roar,I forget it

The big irony is that the 990 is everything the Yamaha Ténéré 700 is; no electronics apart from switchable ABS, tall, good power, good suspension. They even weigh the same (more or less).

The T7 is also a cheaply made bike. Wet sump, nothing special about the frame or design, under powered, and in Australia they will be around $16,000. That's no cheap price. The KTM 1090 is not far off in weight and way more go.

I get what you're saying and I think Yamaha did an outstanding job, but after a test ride on the Yamaha I was left feeling....nothing special really. It's a good bike, it actually looks good, the riding position was perfect apart from that stupid bulge right where your braking foot needs to be, the throttle response made it easy to ride, the suspension was ok I guess, nothing special.....all in all a bike you could strap luggage to and ride off to wherever you want to go. But it didn't make me smile or laugh. It didn't evoke any emotion. I ride a DR650, a frigging dinosaur compared to the T700, but it's so much more fun. And you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't come off a 950 with a big shit eating grin. I've ridden my buddy's 950 Adventure on several occasions and I remember each one, because I thought 'this bike is RIDICULOUS. I NEED ONE'.

I've had my 990r since new in 2012 and always tempted with new bikes, but I can't. It's so much fun Offroad. Often prefer to ride instead of my 450 Offroad with mates on their small enduro bikes, it's just more fun and NAUGHTY HOON FACTOR. I enjoy surprising myself and others with how capable it is. Sure it sucks if you have to pick it up on hill climbs, but it jumps, turns, stops and you often forget your not riding a smaller bike.

I bought the 990 Adventure Baja specifically to get the beast to ride, and to avoid as many electronics as possible. I don't see it as a selling point to include a nanny inside the controls.

Man, I really like the electronics. I know that makes me a sissy or whatever, but I've ridden my 1190 to Peru and on some curves I have come in too hot and you can brake and not stand the bike straight up out of the corner. It really makes me more comfortable riding in the Andes. And everyone says electronics are "waiting to break" but that hasn't been my experience. But the 990 Baja is a great looking bike, one of my favorites and I almost bought one before I ended up on the 1190.

Why not? Electronics are on everything these days... and experienced rider or not, what's wrong with progress? and what's wrong with ABS saving my ass when I go around a corner and through some unexpected slippery surface (for e.g.) Buy what you prefer, but the attitude of thinking it's nanny aids is like preferring a Nokia to an iPhone.

Excellent video gents. I’m a 990 owner, and fiercely proud of it, but a good friend has a 790 and that thing is a weapon! Not enough for me to change though... just doesn’t have enough of the hooligan image 😂

@@Angry-Lynx but it's pretty pitiful in the dirt, try using abs when u wanna lock up the rear and roll down a drop, and I know u can turn it off but having to do it every time u get on the damn things a pain, not to mention it's massive weight aswell

Its not about skill to lock wheels, its that you have to make significant mental effort about braking instead of fully focusing on taking safest path , where you have like .5 sec to make life or death decision

I agree the best is to have both 790 and the 990. I have the 990 for 11 years now and I absolutely love it. It's brutality, engine spirit and versatility. Also have the 1190R that I am selling now as it is not that good for offroad and onroad I feel more like passenger. The 790 was awesome experience and I was bit afraid to try, because I thought I might like it so much I would sell also the 990. But as wonderful as it is, it does not compare with the 990 for long traveling and same as the 1190 R I felt more like a passenger. The bike is taking care of so much (even when all electronics disabled) that it is missing a bit of the rough spirit that the 990 has. But definitely the suspension and all is way ahead. So again, the best would be to have both. :-)

I completely agree, the 990 Adventure R is my favorite adventure bike, and my 2023 KTM 350 EXC-F is my favorite moderate to technical off-road bike, because there is no way one bike can do it all.

Im sure the newer 790 would be a nice ride with all the added electronics however i could not sell my 950 for one.The 950 looks cool,sounds great with aftermarket pipes and the performance is amazing.Downsides are maintenance costs.

Two aspects where not mentioned, which put the 790 ahead of the 990: the fantatic reach (450 to almost 500km when travelling) and the much lower maintanace cost!

My ride modes, traction control and abs braking are all controlled by the little levers under my feet and at the end of the handlebars on my 950 adventure. The only short circuit I get is when the brain and eyesight have a lapse in judgement. Ride that 790 on the TAT and let me know how many towns you come through that can service those electronics when they fail.

I've owned a 990 and now own a 790 R. Sorry 990 owners, the 790 is the winner with ease. Better, smoother power where you needed it and where it counts most, weight and chassis. The 990 feels old and heavy. The 790 feels like a bigger 500.

I think the real challenger is the 690, like honestly that engine is bulletproof, consumes little fuel, has above 70hp which is more than a stock CR500 and it weighs some 150 to 160kg. As far as I know the only real issue, is that under seat tank, which makes it rather uncontrollable in the woops. But I never get, why people prefer the 790. It does absolutely not have a lot of suspension travel, in fact it's more or less identical to the street bike in terms of geometry and honestly, how many people can actually properly blast a 200kg plus bike offroad? I sure as hell can't.

@@TraveladvRajanSRaiThat's one of the points I am very very much opposed to and btw so are all the experts. A soft seat will hurt you after a while and then it will get worse and there is no escaping. Humans have been riding things for so long that we are sort of adapted to it, you do have a seat muscle under your ass. People who ride rode bicycles tour de france style sit on the hardest saddles you could imagine but after a certain time of getting used to it, it won't hurt you. What you need is a good saddle, not a soft one. I would much rather go to a saddle pro with the narrow saddle of an MX type seat and get it fitted to my buttocks then with an armchair like you find on those big beasts.
