#motorcycleadventure #dualsport #adventuremotorcycling #ktm500exc While Clubby and I have been building the Honda CRF300 L Rally, my mate Mark has been quietly and conscientiously completing the build of his KTM500 EXC Adventure.
The Honda CRF300 L Rally has drawn focus of adventure riders back to simple and light machinery and whilst it's a great contender in the under 400 cc class, many riders, in fact most on this channel are seeking a little more grunt. They want a big single that can take them comfortably on a decent motorcycle adventure certainly of up to a week's duration. They don't want a heavy twin and they know a build such s Mark's probably weighs around 125 kilograms ringing wet.
The KTM500 EXC has a reputation as a capable round the world adventure bike having successfully taken a number of riders on their trip of a life time. Most recently Kiwi, Aaron Steinman has ridden a 500 around the world.
I will post the interview I did with him at the end of this video for people interested in the capability of this bike to get the hard long mile under their belt.
For those new to MAD TV I'd encourage you to look around the channel, we have international adventures, bike reviews and Chris Birch extreme videos and other stuff and most recently some great films from Nick Sanders. Occasionally we go live for some fun. Here are some links to help you find the good stuff.

Great video guys I’m from the Netherlands and envy you guys with all that opportunity around the corner to ride the most amazing trails … it the rain is not changing the dirt into unridable mud, I first have to ride to south of France or even better Spain or Portugal, or even further away the Balkan or Turkey. Locally we have the TET-Routes that get’s you away from the highway. That’s why I’m riding a KTM 890 Adv-R to do al the boring Highway or Main roads to go to my destination to have some fun in the dirt. I hope that the manufactures finally waking up, and bring a 500cc Twin that is light and is capable in the dirt like the KTM EXC 500 ADV bike that is build. Again great job, and thanks for all the details shown, that is very helpful.

When people think they are not reliable enough for adventure i will tell you this. We have couple ktm exc 450 bikes with more than 800 hours. Oil changes were made every 30 hours and we used cheap 4 dollar car oil. And all those hours are made on hard enduro tours with 0 problems with engine and fuel injection. If doing easy adv riding oil change intervals can be pushed way past whats recommended in manual

Great build… but for me, If I am gonna do this, I might as well base it in a 450RL. Honda reliability. I’ve seen a lot of these builds. They’ve done a 250L with the CB500 engine build, and I say that is what Honda needs to make. It weighs 350lbs and is a twin for smoothness on the road… You could get that weight down with a 300L frame and single exhaust tube. Mini-Africa Twin would be do me! Big singles are a little too thumpy for highway cruising. IMHO

As good of a engine as you can get for throttle response and torque the Ktm 500s ergonomics and comfort are those of a big trail bike like u said dave. These bikes have incredible power that's delivered faster than the wheels can turn. If KTM put a bike together like this that is more comfortable, not as heavy as the 790 890 it would be a hot seller. All he needs is some Acerbis Z mud fork protectors, a better acerbis muffler heat shield and a extra bracket under mudguard to strengthen the back end and it is a stealth 70% trail bike and 30% road. They do vibrate and shake alot at 110 without the balance weights like u said but I love my old 525 for riding on dirt and a little road. I have tried 3 seats and sunshine coast seats is best one by far and a airhawk on top. Great vid and run down on the best bike ever built by ktm👍🏁

Only issue with the 500 is the inadequate sealing of the air box. I’ve done everything to mine and it’s the best bike I’ve ridden in recent years. Look up rtwPaul on Advrider on his world trip, currently 800 hrs/50,000 km and KTM mechanics recommended a top end job in 250 hrs. So much for all the uninformed KTM haters. Aussie Keith Jobson has a good site and just did his 200 hr review. Forget about the porky dud suspended CRF300, get a 106 kg 500. As for gearing, I’ve had 15/42 for highway travel but 15/47 is my choice although I don’t tackle tough stuff now. One thing, add extra fuel filters. I run a cap filter, aftermarket in-tank filter and a zipty racing filter before the injector. And make sure you know how to replace a fuel pump and carry a spare. Easiest bike to maintain ever. No need for an xtrig expensive shock adjuster, a simple hook tool will do it in no time. Make your own lighting tower, I’ve done it and my lights are better than an 890 Rally.

I’ve always been a die hard old school bike guy, like the XR’s and DRZ’s and CRF’s. And they’re still classic for a reason, but even if you don’t care about the power difference in the new bikes like the EXC, the weight difference is so extreme, even compared to the new Honda’s and Yamaha’s, that it’s hard not to lose respect for them. Cause that difference is so extreme it’s obvious these other brands really aren’t even trying.

I had an XL600 bought new in 83 that I rode for twenty years with zero issues. Then I rode Harleys for a lot of years. A few years back I decided that I really missed the practicality of dual-purpose bikes, I bought a 690 and fell head over heels in love. And then, tragedy struck. The seat was pinching a nerve and my whole groin area would fall asleep. Tried the Seat Concept seat, same thing. FYI, what I mean by tragedy is, I would stop to piss and would have no sensation of holding on LOL. I know it's not really a tragedy but man, not cool! Anyways, I sold the 690 and bought the 901. I do not regret it. The 690 is far superior off road, and the 901 is far superior on road. But the 901 is perfectly fine off road and I really have no problem with its weight. The Explorer mode has finally been released here in the U.S. and I just had it installed yesterday. Gonna try those slip modes for sure, getting tired of forgetting traction control is on and not being able to carry the front end when I want. Anyways, love your videos Dave and a big hello from Michigan where there isn't anything that will eat you.

CRF300L is underpowered with horrible suspension. The 500EXC-F makes a great dirt bike but is way too buzzy as a dual sport or ADV bike. The CRF450RL is the best of both worlds. Plenty of power, amazing suspension, FULL SUBFRAME and Honda reliability. And in the US it's $3000 less than the KTM. The downside to the Honda is that it will require an aftermarket ECU to reach its full potential. But even with that you're $2000 less than the KTM. That buys a lot of ADV gear.

What do you think of flyweight Adv builds: WR450F, DRZ400, DR650, XR650L or military diet on 690/701 Enduro?
@jctoth
@jctoth Жыл бұрын
@@dualsportscandinavia353 I think the WR450F, DRZ400, DR650, and XR650L are all great bikes. They've stood the test of time and folks have been making great lightweight ADV bikes from these platforms for years. My only problem with them is the fact that they're all 5 speed transmissions. For my type of riding a 6 speed is a must. As for the 690/701 I've not ridden the latest iteration with the additional balancer in the head. I know in the previous gen motor the vibrations were brutal. It could be a great bike.
@dualsportscandinavia353
@dualsportscandinavia353 Жыл бұрын
@@jctoth The Big 4 are really far behind...what year model did you ride? 701 Enduro got a secondary balancing shaft already in 2017. The biggest fault is the fake neutrals. One rider suggested to mount a gear shaft from a 500 Exc, but it applied to the 690 Enduro, unclear which year model. KTM/Husqvarna need to do a recall on all models if it is only one spring that needs to be changed! These issues are worse than the gearbox on a tortured liter bike from the 90s.

After a CRF1000, now with a Husky701E, I'm also building a 500excf for adv, that I have already riden on TET (Trans Euro Trail) for few days up to a week. Next September going to TET Greece 3000km trip. I may sell my 701 if the 500 satisfies me on a 3weeks trip (no camping, I'm too old). Already Acerbis 12liters tank, AXP bash plate, waiting for larger clutch case for more oil and comfort seat. I may think of rally tower by Nomad Adv if I sell the 701. Only 1 concern is air intake very low in case of deep (drop) river crossing .

@@glennwr450 really depends on track/technical you ride, and speed you ride it. On French TET, which "easy" overall , my 500 uses 4,3liter/100km, so 250km a 8hours day ride, reaching the gas station. In the more challenging Alps, my 500 uses 5 to 5,3 liters/100km, so 200km on 8hours day trip. I'm riding cool, otherwise, on a 2hours speedy run or real enduro race, my 500 uses more than 6liters/100km, until I get exhausted , haha (I'm 65, hard time to follow younger buddies)

I've got both bikes, a 21 300L and a 22 500 exc. Got the EXC because 1) after loading all my gear up for camping/adv, the weight of the ktm becomes the same weight of the 300L bare bones; 2) for safety on the highway, I want to be able to overtake vehicles and hit ~90mph if necessary - on the trail I want the 500's low end power to use for slow/safer hill climbs without requiring the momentum/speed required to do the same on the smaller engine 300L; 3) the ktm handles nimbly like a heavy mountain bike - it's way safer in the gnar gnar; 4) the ktm is balls to the wall fun fun fun in the dirt. Both bikes need seat upgrades, suspension upgrades (at least the ktm for adv and with my fat ass) and rear rack kits, bigger tanks, and the usual protection. I like the honda, but paying more to also get the ktm was the best decision I've made so far. I won't let friends and family on the 300L in the dirt with me (not gravel roads but real world single track with high exposure) until I get the red's suspension upgraded - it's too dangerous otherwise.
