To cross deep seas distancing over hundreds of kms and migrate to Australia the people then should know that such a land mass did exist. How did they get this knowledge? Australia is certainly not visible from Asian side for them to chase. Seems mysterious to me. Can someone explain this?

What was their motive in wandering into sea for days to go to Australia without prior knowledge of existence of such a continent?
