As a malay, it's not that we prefer English more than Malays.. But because we tend to believe that foreigners mostly can't speak Malays, that's why we use English.. As you already experienced, most Indonesian can't speak English, so anywhere you go they will speak Bahasa Indonesia whether you understand it or not.. In other hand, most Malaysian can speak with at least a simple basic English, that's why we use English more to foreigners.. We do understand Bahasa Indonesia.. but if a foreigner using it, sometimes it sound a little weird.. we need to adjust that you are talking in Bahasa Indonesia and not some weird German language.. 😄

In Malaysia, the Malay people in particular, they do understand Bahasa Indonesia. You can speak to them in Bahasa Indonesia but please know that there are quite a few distinctive differences in the vocabulary. Some words in B. Indonesia mean totally something else in B. Actually in Kedah where I originally come from, CUCUK also means sesuai/suitable. It is normal in Kedah to say "Makanan ini tak secucuk dengan selera aku" (pronounced in Kedah as 'secucok' with the second 'u' sounded like 'o') which means "This dish is not suitable for my taste". So when you combine 'se' with 'the root word 'cucuk to be 'secucuk'', it means suitable in Kedah. Cucuk in Kedah is the equivalent of cocok in Indonesia. Indonesia too routinely adds "se' to "cocok" and lengthen it to "secocok" having same meaning in Kedah. Of course like the rest of Malaysia, cucuk also means to poke or to take injection jab. Cocok, like coba (cuba in Malaysia) imho does not exist in Malaysia. Kedah btw is a part of Malaysia..

@jonmath4182 Жыл бұрын
In malaysia _bang_ is informal while being respectful, and it won't even matter if the person is older/younger, as long as a male. However, for females, if the lady is obviously younger, or if unclear whether she's older/younger, then do not address her as _kakak/kak_ lest you incur her wrath from a bruised ego 😂 In such a case, address her as _dik_ (deyk) which is informal abbreviation of _adik_ (younger sister/brother) And the sellers will address customers informally with "bos" (boss, because customers are the boss) although you can occasionally hear some customers unclear on the concept, addressing the sellers as _bos_ instead! 😂😂😂

I grew up with friends who don't speak good Bahasa. And I don't speak any Hokkien or Cantonese or Tamil. In English we're equals. So in KL and some parts of Selangor you'll find locals talking to each other in English (well.. Manglish at least). It's different in other states where the non-Malay population are kind of forced to speak Bahasa in order to earn a living but in KL, Selangor and I think also Johor we tend to speak in English with each other. It's slowly changing. I've started to notice the younger generation especially the Millenials and Gen-Z tend to speak Bahasa with almost no accent but it's a slow process. Among my closest friends I still speak with them in English.

We Malaysian can understand Indonesian almost perfectly, unless you talk in an ethnic dialect language like Bugese or Javanese, but most Indonesian especially if they came from a remote region cant understand our Malay regional dialect. We might have some words that sounds similar but have totally different meaning than Indonesian. Like you call "Bandara" for Airport, here in Malaysia Bandar or Bandara just means city or town and an airport is "Lapangan Terbang". The word gampang in Indonesian have a very different meaning than in Malaysia, although it came from the same root word but the meaning in Malaysia is totally different. Just talk in Bahasa Indonesia with us we don't mind we can understand it, it's just that when we see foreigners we tend to assume you guys don't know Bahasa so we immediately try to speak English. I think the different between Indonesian and Malaysian Bahasa is like a person from Southern State in USA meeting with a person from Outback Australia and they both speak their own regional English dialect and slangs but they can still converse and understand each other xD.

Looks like you have to make another trip back to Malaysia to truly immerse into our culture ... The Malays, Chinese, Indians and all other indigenous races of Malaysian Borneo... Nampaknya kamu belum lagi berjumpa dengan lokal yang sebenarnya...kami semua boleh berbahasa Melayu selain dari bahasa ibunda kami masing masing. Agak berbeza sedikit dari Bahasa Indonesia... See you in Malaysia soon!

One day come to Indonesia, and feel high speed railway jakarta to bandung, usually by car need 3 or 4 hours. But with high speed railway 420 km/hours jakarta bandung only need 45 minuts. Is this the first on southeast Asia. Amazing.
