Kampung Baru is still around because of Muslim inheritance laws. Let me explain. When a muslim pass away, his property will hv to be divided to all his son and daughters as according to Syariah laws. Sons get 2X whats the daughters get. After several generations, and with malays having large families, a property could be owned by thousands of decedents. Thus its almost impossible for buyers to negotiate to buy the property as someone in the family will object.

Ellis and Alicia are on a different level than other Western vloggers. Notice how they make an effort to interact with locals and the locals actually want to chat and connect with them. It's not easy to convince people to do that when you stick a camera in their face.

Agreed about the best places for nasi lemak. Usually they are those homemade nasi lemak by the roadside. Thank you Mr Khalil for your hospitality. Lontong is also a popular dish served during Hari Raya. I think its about time you visit Sarawak and spend a week at a longhouse and experience their daily lives in the jungle of Borneo.

Kampong Baru is in the big city itself. The inhabitants will definitely go to KLCC, Bukit Bintang or Chow Kit to run their errands, not just stay put in the area. They literally live in the heart of the city and there are many prominent figures and millionaires that came out off Kampung Baru. I'm a KL native, born and bred and live in Bukit Ceylon near Bukit Bintang. Initially, there were many kampung houses or Malay kampung back in the days as long as 1800s and paved ways for development. We need development to progress but Kampung Baru will co-exist within KL's development till the end of time. Fyi, there's quite a number of "Malay kampung" houses as well if you go to other parts of KL such as Kampung Datuk Keramat which is quite similar to Kampong Baru where they have eateries and street vendors. KL history is quite rich and diverse. If just wanna talk about Malay kampung, the area that I'm living (Bukit Nenas) used to be Malay kampung circa 1800s and as time progress with the British brought in immigrants from its other colonised countries and protectorate, this area became diverse and landscape had changed with modern development that came through after.
