We were so lucky in the NY Philharmonic to work with him as a guest conductor during the 1970's and '80's. He was one of the greatest conductors I ever worked with and I still miss his warm and intense approach. Our performances of "House of the Dead" were some of the most exciting and meaningful experiences that we had: also Bartok's "Bluebeard's Castle"... and Tschaikovsky 6th Deeply felt and communicated.

Couldn't agree more. I understudied a role in that production and his warmth and humanity as a deeply connected artist has stayed with me all these years.

The best conductor, Czech, for this symphony! And so charismatic!

There was only one conductor who could truly accurately represent Dvorak's 9th and that was Kubelik. May he RIP peacefully. It will be a long time before anyone dares to challenge him... and they will ultimately fail. Bravo Maestro. Odpočívej v pokoji.

Kubelik excelled in Dvořák, as did Talich, Ančerl and Mackerras.

Was fortunate enough to see Kubelik conduct this with the Cleveland Orchestra back in the mid-70s. They would give students the front rows, so while I couldn't see the entire orchestra, I got a great view of the conductor.

Lucky bastard. Here I am, a 15 year old and I haven't had the pleasure of seeing and listening to such a stunning performance like this before.

Kubelik, the poet among the great conductors. Marvellous. And in some way: nonsense, this best performance thing; he or he, no not he, etc. This symphony can be rendered in several ways. All the great have something of their own to say about it in their performance.

So great to see Kubelik live here! Bravo & thx to share!
A splendid performance. Kubelik and Dvořák were always a great combination.

The version of "From the New World" I have been accustomed to since the 1980's when I got acquainted with it. Very convincing interpretation, with reasonable colours and tempos applied, ending up with huge satisfaction to the audience emotionally. The winds are terrific in particular and the audio from the LP and the CD I own, is up there and past the Everest and the Mercury labels in general. I take this interpretation as my own ref.

What a treasure! There are so many sensational Czech recordings conducted by Kubelik on the internet, but there are almost no videos available. What a treat to see him conducting the greatest Czech composition of them all, in his conducting prime with the supreme VPO. He may have been the greatest conductor of this musical genre, had it not been for a certain Hungarian Jewish conductor named Iztvan Kertesz, who was just about incomparable in almost anything he conducted, esp. in Czech works. But Kubelik is the closest on his heels in Dvorak conducting.

Kubelik was a thoughtful conductor and is underappreciated today. I was enjoying this performance until the flubbed chord at 22:00. Awful flat brass.

A friend said this of Rafel Kubelk: "Anyway, one of the last monophonic performances that has never been surpassed is the Tchaikovsky 6th Symphony in Chicago, in case you find it anywhere. Conducted by Rafael Kubelik." If anyone finds this performance, please post the link below. Thank you. BTW, this particular performance sends adrenal/electrical impulses down my spine and arms. :-)

If you have a working turntable, you can find it on a Mercury Records re-release album titled "Chicago Symphony Orchestra The Kubelik Legacy Vol. I." The catalog number is MG3-4500. Also contained in this 3-LP set are "Pictures at an Exhibition," the Mozart Symphony No. 38 ("Prague"), and "The Moldau" and "From Bohemia's Meadows and Forests" from "Ma Vlast."
