Hi Jon! I couldn’t agree more about the BX fuel filter design! I’ve seen other videos of folks changing BX filters and thought that it was an awful design. Nice work on the 200 hour maintenance! Thanks for sharing!

Another great video (I know it's a couple years old). I just did my fuel filters for the first time. I have 100 hours. I don't know if I would wait longer, the underneath one was black inside. I am going to get an external filter kit but will wait another 100 hours. It truly is a PIA to change that bottom one.

I put a barbed brass coupler on the hose going to the tank and added a piece of fuel line then pushed up a little and curved it above so that the next time I can disconnect the clamp and have room to pull down and access much easier.

You made a comment about the bad strap wrench's for oil filter removal. I had the same problem, and other Kubota owners put me on to this filter remover. It is like a set of vice grips, and it doesn't slip but removers the old oil filters easy. Harbor Freight 10 bucks. Fits about any filter.

Thanks for the Video now I dread changing mine even more! Haha. I haven’t changed the fuel filters yet, been putting it off for this very reason. I filter my fuel from the transfer tank which helps me a lot on fuel filter life. I notice the BX air filter gets more dirt and dust to it then any other tractor I have. I don’t understand that. I’m with you, Kubota needs to redesign there fuel filter setup ASAP on the BX.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 4 жыл бұрын
That’s smart to filter your fuel at your transfer tank! Have you heard that on road diesel is more filtered than off road? I figured you might have some insight on that with busses and tractors. Someone left a comment suggesting this. Keep on tractoring!

A RITTER BIT WILL DO I’ve heard that debate as well but I struggle to believe this. I’m pretty sure quality would be the same but I don’t have any facts to back this. I’ve ran both for many hours of operation in tractors and have never recognized a difference. Storage of off road at gas station around here sometimes isn’t as clean as highway fuel. Kinda have to learn where to get it to rule out this factor.

I added the aftermarket fuel filter on my 2370 best thing I did plus the offroad fuel I was using was very dirty. 40hours on the filter under the tractor and was blocked solid. Plus now I use on road and the pumps have a filter on there filler line. It is a pain and you don't have to worry about causing a leak by pinching the line to tight. Not a good day. Hi Jon, I totally agree that lower fuel filter is a pain. At 49.2 hours I changed every filter and fluid, even the front axle, just for my own peace of mind. I will be relocating the lower fuel filter at the next service. I had a John Deere 332 with the Yanmar 3TN66 3cyl diesel. It had the electric fuel pump up in the engine area on the frame, and a single fuel filter attached to the engine that had a replaceable element. Kubota should get with it and do the same. Take care.

I had to change the bottom fuel filter on my BX23s in January (-30 C) in an unheated shop. It was plugged because of still having summer diesel fuel in the tank. I used the loader and the backhoe outriggers as a hoist to get more room underneath, but remember to use axle stands for safety.

You have to be careful when cranking on those oil filters. The manual says to screw on until the rubber gasket just touches the engine and then tighten 1/2 turn only. That procedure holds true for most engines. The same is true for the transmission filter. HAND TIGHTEN 1/2 turn only... no wrench. :-)
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 4 жыл бұрын
I've heard that and probably have read that somewhere as well. However, I just don't trust that theory. I'd really hate to lose a filter a half turn with a wrench gives me peace of mind. Keep on tractoring!
@eosjoe565
@eosjoe565 4 жыл бұрын
@@ritterjon It's actually in your BX23S Operator's Manual. :-) Some filters like spin-on fuel filters will specify 3/4 turn after contact but oil filters are usually all 1/2 turn. Never had one fall off in over 50 years. In fact, with just 1/2 turn they still require a wrench for removal. Go figure. :-)

I replace the fuel filter under the tractor by installing a small see through water separator/fuel filter, which I placed near the front. don't want to scare you Jon but do a search on the Achilles heel of the Kubotas, the diff lock. Just lost my tractor to it. wondering why I had a hard time to put it in gear, I found out it was getting in gear by itself. Gone for warranty repairs after not even a year. The other problem on my BX is the quick disconnect on the FEL hoses. Mine were moving up and down and seeping oil. Miss my toy. :(

The reason why they have two fuel filters is a good idea the filter underneath the floor board is to pick up any debris from the fuel before it reaches the pump the second filter is safety feature because if the fuel pump goes bad they can come apart from the inside and the debris will be in the fuel that the filter by the engine will pick up it is the last line of defense before damage to the engine. But I do wish there was a water separator.

@@ritterjon Thanks for your answer, since I have bothered you a lot, I promise that it is the last question. bone that this kit that buys the filters that it brings, instead of bringing them plastic brings them metallic, I am talking about the two little ones that appear in the link that I sent you and it is more advisable to put them on plastic. I'm seriously sorry for so many questions but I ignore a lot of this. www.ebay.com/itm/KUBOTA-FILTER-KIT-BX23-BX22-BX2660-BX2200-and-BX2670-HH150-32094-TOP-QUALITY-/261929228311?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292

Kubota does have filters on there engines, on my b1700 its right on the engine and on my ZD326 its also right on the engine. The newer mini compact tractors they cut corners to save on cost factor that's why yours are in line filters.

I think I would switch to the full synthetic T6 up where you are 15-40 is kind of thick for 20 below! Full Synthetic 5/40 is better, especially when I think Kubota recommends 10/30.

Actually Kubota has 15/40 listed as an appropriate oil to use in our winter temps. I didn't have any issues last winter with it and would always plug in the block heater before starting so that helps a lot. Keep on tractoring!

I hate those filters also. I change the first one in frame every other year (150hrs) and the one by the engine every 4 years, so not such a big deal. In past years when I ran it more and had fuel problems it was a bigger deal for me. I use premium fuel from a good supplier and have less problems now.

Most diesels have at least 2 filters. The first one would help with water..... sort of..... Wouldn't hurt to change the first one a bit more often (at least if you see it getting "brown") I am sure it does the job Kubota wants it to do, but totally agree they need to change the design. This is what you find in $2,000 ride on lawn mowers.....but even my mower has one that's easy to get to. If I bought one of these (will likely buy a B-series/2025R/Mahindra Max size.... I actually like them all but leaning toward a Kioti CX2510) At the end of the day buy the machine you like that will do the job you need - they are all good machines and each one will have things that seem like a stupid design, or cheap. No different with pickup trucks, cars or motorcycles.. (39 years as a mechanic)

That fuel filter looks easier to change than the fuel filter in my 87 Ranger that's in the frame rail between the exhaust and engine block....#1 stupid place for a fuel filter, next to the exhaust pipe off the header, #2 there may be room for a kindergarten age child to fit their hands in there, but not an adult...its purely by feel and pliers that I got that stupid filter out of there and of course its a damn Ford thing with plastic quick connect fittings rather than rubber hose and a couple clamps that would make it a simple easy change but trying to fuss with getting the filter in there holding those quick connect fittings together while trying to fish quick connect clips through the fittings is a joke in itself. I think I'll go with an aftermarket fuel filter kit on my BX when I get it though, there's no need for 2 fuel filters of that type, I'll leave the one at the engine but the one in the frame is going bye bye for sure.

Take off that guard. I took mine off. I don't need that skid plate guard, all I do with mine is cut grass around house and don't do any forestry stuff where I would have sticks poking from the bottom . I guess my question is this. Why would you want to pinch off your fuel lines. I wait till the tank is almost empty and just let the remaining fuel run out into a container. This way it will remove any trash in the tank into the container and let the line from the fuel pump empty also which can remove any trash in the line.

Do your self a favor - pickup a DONALDSON FUEL/WATER SEPARATOR P553203 and a Baldwin FB1311 Fuel Filter Base and do away with both of those little toy things. They are junk. One filter should/would last you a lifetime on that little engine. Also pickup a Silicone Pad Diesel Fuel Filter Heater Wrap. They come in 120v - house outlet or 12v - tractor battery powered. That fuel filter will filter much better (3 microns @ 99%) than any stock KUBOTA filter. Mount it any place you like.
