For me, this is one of the rare moments when an excellent singer with full controll over an extraordinary instrument transcends the boundaries of mere 'good singing', 'good technique', 'musical intelligence', giving way to a heart-wrenching vulnerability and abandon, an exposed and unprotected humanity. What makes Shicoff and his singing so grand for me is the fact that he never sacrifices the firmness and beauty of the vocal line for expression (as a more mediocre singer might do) - in fact, apart from being so touching, it is also one of the best renditions of the aria by technique, evenness, legato, phrasing, intonation, and other directly musical parameters. He achieves this extraordinary portrayal THROUGH his flawless singing, his understanding of the character and the words, transcending all elements further, merging them on a high level... Thank you, ditogam, thank you, Neil!

Немалую роль в этом играет то, что певец понимает то, о чем поёт. Нил Шикофф изучал русский язык, и фразировка звучит именно поэтому изумительно осмысленно. Надеюсь, перевод моих слов будет точен)))

@@pryan5183 though Neil isn't Russian or of that back round language wise, it's still in terms of Gedda and his Russian back round with language, a choice for me of beauty, since he brings up Gedda, I'll say this, as a voice after seeing both in house-- his is only his own opinion and mine is mine-- and mine is Shicoff has the more beautiful voice for me, no right or wrong, so saying Gedda is much better is nothing, only an opinion not important for me, what do I care anyhow! I know what I like and he knows what he likes,-- then go listen to Gedda he is great, but perhaps I should be Rude get on Gedda's site and say Shicoff is better etc. and capable of many more spinto roles then Gedda , which NS was.

I would mention Koslowsky and Fritz Wunderlich also.
Wow...saw this in Oct or 2018 for the first time...would rank this with Wunderlich and Lemeshev. Why wasn't Shicoff better known? I heard of him upon occasion decades ago in radio broadcasts from Texaco at the Met on Saturdays, but clearly he was the equal of some of the "tenors" who had bigger play.
@basilmanolakos49264 жыл бұрын
Neil Shicoff operatically bit off more than he could chew. He gained a reputation for canceling and also increased anxiety before stepping onto the stage. Also, he went through a messy divorce and a nasty custody battle regarding his daughter - and these problems sadly crept into his professional life. I last heard him on 2 Met Broadcasts as Don Jose and Manrico - neither role of which he was well suited. His tone had become far more astringent and a collection of raw nerve endings. Eventually, he phased out his singing career entirely. He was supposed to sing PETER GRIMES at the Met but evidently he withdrew from these performances.
