I love how much Bonney’s character has grown in the Egghead arc. She was, before Egghead, basically a background character that you only ever saw a few times. But now, she is such an important, and great character in the series, and her relationship with Kuma is so amazing. Watching her (and Kuma) suffer like this was very heartbreaking.

The one thing I think is often overlooked in this flashback is the profound respect people have for Kuma after witnessing what he went through and his ultimate resolve. I don't think we've had a character popularity poll since but I expect Kuma to be close to Whitebeard levels of admiration after the flashback is done in the anime.

I've cried many times in One Piece but Kuma's backstory, especially the ending hit me hard. The day the last chapter of his backstory came out I attended my Grandfather's funeral. Read the chapter afterwards to take my mind off everything but Kuma only reminded me of my Grandfather. It felt like Oda personally wrote that chapter for me, even though that isn't possible.
