Something I've only just twigged is that, if he wanted to, Mihawk could have easily cut Zoro in half with Yoru. The amount of control needed to cut Zoro and avoid gutting him is another example of Mihawk's skill.

I mean, in his first scene he slices both a pistol shot and a cannonball with a single swing and with so much precision that both pieces of the pistol shot go in the perfect directions to hit two people that were behind him. I feel like that's a more impressive feat of dexterity.

A lesson that Don Krieg learned the HARD way... you may THINK you're ready with a fleet of ships, a small army at your command and the finest arms and equipment money can buy... but if you're an overconfident bully, The Grand Line will CHEW YOU UP AND SPIT YOU OUT. Hell, it's why the Straw Hats faffed off for two years after the Paramount War... Paradise was just a warm-up. It was at Marineford that even a dumbass like Luffy realized "Okay... if we go to the New World as we are now, we are gonna get our ASSES handed to us. So let's reconvene in Saobody when we're ready to continue our journey." Level-grinding, basically. On the restaurant-ship Baratie, Mihawk was your basic Beef Gate... the guy who will stomp you into the ground if you're a low-level scrub. Though during the timeskip, Mihawk is ALSO the guy who teaches Zoro how to use Armament Haki... so his swords will stop breaking every time he tries to cut someone like a CP9 agent who can tense their muscles 'til they're stronger than bessamer-steel.

This scene is what had me commit to the manga/anime back in the day. My kid-brain was like 'damn, if this guy is this good with just his tiny cross-letter-opener, imagine what he could do with the big boi sword!' And then he drew the big boi sword and I spit all over the page. Legit thought Zoro was getting killed by being sliced into human sushi. So glad the show absolutely nailed the scene and the characters ❤

The duel was so good, they combined some great use of fastened CGI and practical choreography. Mihawk's voice, style, mannerisms were Perfect. Straight out of the anime. Zoro's no-nonsense retorts were nice. Mihawk saying "Magnificent" to Zoro's resolve was just chilling and emotional.

I felt like it was a bit of a missed opportunity. Krieg served so many purposes at this stage of the series. He was the big bad bounty in the east blue, chased back out of the grand line in shambles. He really was there to drive home just how AWFUL the grand line can be. The weather, the directions, and the random monsters, some in human skin, that you might stumble over. It made it clear that the grand line is a BIG DEAL and its not something to be entered with a stupid grin and breezy self confidence. Then he served to make the viewers (and straw hats) see how scary mihawk is, and how irrational events can be. His entire fleet slaughtered and him chased down to the baratie over a ruined nap. But it also shows us the determination of luffy and crew to fight, to keep pushing on, and show they can handle someone on kriegs level, only for zoro to be squashed by a mihawk that honestly LIKED the guy, and that makes it even more terrifying. I mean, if he got crushed that bad by a dude who likes and respects zoro and his goals and determination, as well as his outlook on being a swordsman, how bad would it have been had he been angry?

@@chrishubbard64 Yes but there's only so much you can fit into a live action series like this, and between showing a random pirate who gets his ass handed to him early on, and one of the Seven Warlords who are MAJOR antagonists throughout the entire show, the choice is clear.

Also, he doesn't have a Devil Fruit power or even a crew on his own. He only sails with a small ship but somehow he knows every single place in the seas including The Marine Base. Also, we never see him have a single scratch or scar throughout the series and he's also super rich to live in a big ass castle alone (until Perona and Zoro have to stay for 2 years because of Kuma) This man and Shanks are still the most mysterious characters in One Piece even for 25 years of running.
