@ngongahbilly94346 сағат бұрын
I'm Luo and from their speech I can understand what they say at 80 per cent. In Language studies we find that borrowing items of language from neighbouring languages, and behaviour is common. But what they choose to call themselves is their prerogative. Which wider language group they choose to identify with is also their prerogative. But academic studies in language may determine where they fall according to language history and the dominance of specific language and cultural features which may not take into account what the Kumam feel about it. It is a fact that Luo speaking people can also be found in Ethiopia, so the claim that the Kumam came from Ethiopia does not preclude them from being Luo.
@papd35326 ай бұрын
When the Luo conquered other groups they did not practice Slavery(other Nilotic groups like Maasai, Nyamanga etc also did not practice slavery) but assimilated the groups they conquered through intermarriage into sub-clans allowing these groups to swear ALLEGIENCE, through an elaborate process, to the existing Luo clans and warrior leaders like Owiny . Modern times has come with some complexities and challenges but the clan system across Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Congo, Chad, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Ethiopia Gambella/Eritrea, Sudan/Lower Egypt has existed for centuries among the Nilotic Luo .
@papd35326 ай бұрын
In Tanganyika and South Nyanza Kenya the ancestor of the Luo, Rachuonyo also married a Luhya Maragoli named Adwet . Adwet bore Rachuonyo the most number of children, at least 15, out of all his wives . The Luo of Tanganyika and South Nyanza Kenya including Karachuonyo have extensive Luhya particulary Maragoli admixture . There are clans in Homa Bay/Kendu Bay who reference themselves as JoKadwet . Also the Luo-Wasweta and Luo-Mukisero in Kenya Migori and Tanzania Shirati are descended from admixture with Abagusii and Abakuria clans that were assimilated .

@@papd3532the Abagusii are very diverse group with different people of different origins. You can not generalize Originally the land that is known as “Abagusii” was inhabited by indigenous hunter gatherers (most likely related to the Khoisan), and various Southern Cushitic speaking groups during prehistoric times. Then some time later, some Nilotic groups (related to the Kalenjin) came into Kisii land, and assimilated those groups. Then after a while, the Luhya entered western Kenya from the Buganda kingdom and settled into Kisii, assimilating those groups, and around the same time, some Luo groups entered the region during their migrations and some Luo clans were absorbed. On the second question, there are no differences as of this moment (currently). However, sibling rivalry is a thing and was witnessed during the reign of Milton Obote (a lango). Bazilio Okello (an acholi) who was the Chief of the Armed Forces clashed with president Obote (a lango) for appointing a fellow lango instead of an acholi to a government position and this partially contributed to the downfall of Obote and the rise of Museveni to power.

I'm stating this because I've come across Josuba, especially from Imfang'ano (Mfang'ano) who can speake Dhosuba very well. I come from a community who are also bilingual (communicating both in Luo and A Lake Victorian Bantu language). I communicated with these Josuba without the need of a translated. My 5 cents: Kumam (and their close cousins the Langi) are Ateker. Why? Africans have attachment to certain things that have familial ties. Outside the family connection, the next closely-knit unit is the clan. No African will adopt another clan, however well-received they are in the new clan. In my village, there are Luo and Bantu who have lived there for over 5 decades. They have learnt the local Ateso language, sometimes even better then the ethnic Iteso because their parents learnt it when it was relatively undiluted. But what surprise you is despite being accepted within the community, they will never be found participating in matters that concern the clan, they do not partake in the local rites. Why would the Kumam and Langi give themselves clan names that are obviously Ateker, unless they themselves were Ateker to begin with? Didn't the Luo groups they supposedly came from have clans? Even a child who grows up among his/her mother's clan will never become a member of that clan. What about total strangers?

Historical facts and personal opinions are divergent . The Luo-Kumam and Luo-Langi are assimilated groups . The Luo assimilated multiple groups including the Luo-Suba and Luo-Kavirondo . Luo history is extensive across 9-12 territories . Few groups occupy several territories in the continent of Africa such as the Fulani of Senegal, Gambia, Niger, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali or the Somali of Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya ,Somalia . The Somali and Fulani were Nomadic . The Luo were River-Lake Nilotes,Nilotic pastoralists and small scale subsistence farmers(millet etc) . My view. African on African assimilation are brought by a combination of two factors. Conquest and intermarriage. Ie the women of defeated group are taken over. These women have babies who now belong to the dominant tribe but maintain their mother tongue and culture since its still prevalent. These children initially are bilingual but now identify with their dads ethnic group. By the third generation the assimilation is complete but they still identify with their mothers/grandmothers culture since they are almost just as many as the men from the dominant tribe. Further down the generations they marry mainly within their dads group and identify as that but then some of them will come up with question of whats their original identity. Long story short tribes are assimilated because their women are captured in numbers and intermarried.

The Luo-Kumam identity crisis is due to pre-colonial and post-colonial political expediency . In both Uganda and Kenya politics of ethnicity can supersede politics of ideology . At the center of any groups political economy and survival is access and distribution of resources . By distancing from Luo and Ateker , Luo-Kumam have a better chance of accumulating exclusive rights to resources both at the local and national level and midwifing unique administrative locations or centers . Administering resources from Teso or Lango in both pre-colonial and post-colonial Uganda can leave the Luo-Kumam with less resources due to complex factors .
@papd35326 ай бұрын
In Kenya the Luo-Suba had a similar issue but the Suba and Luo completely intermixed through marriage based on DNA samples . Same issue with Luo-Kumam intermarriages with the Ateker, Luo-Langi and Luo-Padhola. The Luo-Suba lobbied for unique administrative centers but the suggested solutions have been through policy and politics with resource distribution being at the center of dealing with the identity impasse . To resolve the identity crisis among the Luo-Kumam the groups in Northern and Eastern Uganda must have excess to resources particularly from the national tax base . Also identity politics of ethnicity must be damned down .
@KPtravels0016 ай бұрын
That is right. Politics of ethnicity is stronger. In Uganda, the political economy is very much tied to the politics of ethnicity thus names like "Ateso sub region". Distribution of resources is to a greater extent directed to regions and as such, separating to have a separate district as an ethnic group is important as it enables direct access to resources.

Since Yoweri Museveni took over from Gen Tito Okello(Luo-Acholi) in 1986 ,Eastern and Northern Uganda have received less resources than Southern/Central/Western Uganda . Typically members of the same clan do not intermarry but there are rare exceptions . The Mugirango clan among the Bantu Abagusii represented assimilation with the Nilotic Luo of Kenya hence Luo-Mugirango . The Clan system, marriage and family life are extremely important among Nilotic Luo and children are valued and rarely abandoned(modern times has created exceptions) as they belong to the father and the clan . All these can be backed by names. It is very clear when they met natives of the areas they had to adopt, religion and so called modern education never helped , especially having Kakungulu and his cohorts , most names of Ateker have been distorted to adopt colonial taste of Kakungulu and British

the Abagusii are very diverse group with different people of different origins. This is what makes up modern day Abagusii
