ALPHA L., notre lead, nous a envoûtés avec sa voix de basse.
Les esclaves déformaient les mélodies chantées durant les offices, ce qui a par exemple donné KUMBAYA la déformation de "Come by here".

When I think back to those incredible summers I spent at church camp as a little guy back in the 50s and early 60s my eyes well up with happy memories of sitting around the campfire singing at the top of our lungs . Michael row the boat ashore was always a favorite with me {so much so I named my son Michael }. Singing in "rounds" Kumbayah { first the girls then the boys} . After a long battle with a brain tumor and surviving the surgery I can still recall the words clear as yesterday.

This is a traditional African song, the word itself is of Bantu origin. Kumbaya my Lord in many Bantu languages it means "The House of Yahweh" . "Kumbaya (come here) #Kumba (house) #Ya-weh (God) so if put all the words together our ancestors did all they could to remember the words. Actually Ya Comba also spelled Ya Kuma was queen of the Ya Comba Kingdom,(Present day Sierra Leone) She was conquered and many of her surviving subjects were sold into slavery. I don't believe 19th century negro vernacular for "come by here" sounded anything like "Kumba ya". 🤷🏿
