1:47 That creaking on Kumiko's voice 😭 I also can't imagine being in Kumiko's shoes, even being an adult. There's only so much you can put on one person's shoulders especially someone that young. The amount of shit she's expected to do, make the right decisions on and personally deal with in the club is insane, not to mention dealing with her own feelings, desires, frustrations and doubts all the while. That's why it's so gut-wrenching seeing Kumiko scream her heart out. She's sacrificed so much yet cannot be afforded the one thing she wants for herself.

I give so much credit to the voice actors for making such a gut-punching scene feel so emotional and raw. You can really feel both their sadness and frustrations in every word spoken. It was one last moment of selfishness from Kumiko from all her frustrations throughout this season delivered so beautifully that it makes you feel all all the same emotions as her. I'm not one that gets emotional very often from watching Anime and can probably count on one hand the number of series that have made me cry but this series has made me cry more than once. and a part of that is just how well the voice actors did.

THIS is were I knew Sound! Euphonium was my favorite TV show, animated or not, topping titans like Twin Peaks, True Detective, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and more. Episode 12 was BRILLIANT to say the very least. I was emotionally devastating, but beautifully heartwarming at the same time. Can't believe how alive and genuine these characters feel. Kumiko is one of a kind. That said, guys: Am I the only one who thought Reina made a mistake? People keep saying Reina was SURE that she was NOT selecting Kumiko (she's that cold), but I understood she selected the best one WITHOUT knowing it was gonna be Mayu (maybe even thinking it was Kumiko). Can someone comment?
@warpatato2 ай бұрын
0:35 Kumiko was the one under the impression that Reina simply picked blindly during the auditions like everyone else. 0:44 However Reina explicitly knew which one is Kumiko during the auditions yet still picked Mayu's solo. "How would I not recognize your sound?" meant that Reina could literally discern it was Kumiko's style of playing purely by listening. I guess it's plausible since they've been playing together since middle school. Similar to music enthusiasts discerning the style of their favorite trumpeter, for example. 0:58 This was the exact moment Kumiko realized that Reina really did knew. Basically during the audition itself since she knew, Reina had to decide between standing by her principles or betraying them so she could grant both their own personal wishes

@@warpatato Thanks, my friend. I didn't want to rewatch the episode and still don't (I think I'm too darn sensitive, took me days to recover from Eupho 3, even when it's not a tragedy at all, haha), so your explanation and a couple seconds of every timestamp you kindly put made me realize the whole thing. I think I missed those lines and especially Kumiko's realization reaction (brilliant...) because I was kind of trying to hold it together after the previous scenes.

I think the decision to pick Mayu was wrong from a musical standpoint, wrong from a moral standpoint, incredibly tragic for multiple characters I care about, and that the viewer is not supposed to think of it this way, yet it's the most absolutely incredible ending for the series to have. It's a classic case of how much tragedy in this world comes from people being trapped by an idea, or from their sense of what they are "supposed to" be, or what role they are "supposed to" play. Kumiko played the role of the Buchou who is supposed to sacrifice herself to support the band. Reina played the role of the 'objective' champion who stops at nothing to be the best and win. Mayu played the role of the earnest band member who believes in meritocracy. They play the role they're 'supposed' to play, follow their 'ideals' which really are something that comes from a society outside themselves, and end up with a result that no one really wants. Reina seriously hurt her best friend for what she (in my opinion incorrectly) perceived to be a tiny increase in the chance of winning gold. Kumiko had to be publicly humiliated in the most thorough way, and after that give a speech about accepting this outcome where she had to bury her pain. She's had to do this multiple times in fact. She's been completely shit on by everyone this entire season. Mizore rudely saying she can't picture her in music school. Hazuki saying Mayu was picked based on skill. Reina calling her a failure as a president, and then giving a 3/4 assed apology. Mayu, intentionally or not, repeatedly antagonizing her over it and rubbing it in her face, Michie calling her name and making her think she won the soli back only to pull the rug from under her. And finally where it all led to, the end result and Reina's ultimate decision. Mayu... It's hard to say what she wanted, but it's very clear that she did not want the solo to the extent that it caused Kumiko and Reina this much pain. She likes playing, and wants to do her best, and is happy that they truly wanted her to do her best, but she still doesn't like that what she got from that was everyone else being sad. This kind of shit is what's wrong with society, in a perfect nutshell. Three seasons, all the movies. All the drama and triumph and blood sweat, and tears. All of it leads to fucking this. This outcome. It's agonizing but I love it.

I second this. Months have passed since episode 12 and the finale and I just can’t stop remembering those scenes. I love them but it hurts so much. I don’t think KyoAni decision to change the ending was wrong but I don’t like it. I think Kumiko’s efforts should’ve been rewarded and you know what’s really heartbreaking for me is that it isn’t the fact that she lost the soli, it is the fact, imo, that she wasn’t rewarded for her sacrifices this year. She took so much shit from everyone in the band and still decided to help them and support them and be true to themselves. I know everyone worked hard but I don’t think anyone sacrificed this much as Kumiko did and in the end we didn’t really see her appreciated. Everyone came to Mayu telling her she did a great job playing the soli after the kansai competition but Kumiko kept the club together and supported everyone but not even a single recognition from anyone. This part is really frustrating for me.

I just want to add to this and say that I think differently about the auditions for the soli. After listening both nearly a dozen times, I fully believe Mayu was the better choice for the piece as a whole while at the same time, Kumiko was the better Eupho player. I'm no expert on this kind of thing and whether anything I will say here is accurate or not, I'm not sure, but I believe the intention of this piece was for the Trumpet to be the focal point and for the Eupho to compliment it. I believe Mayu sounded like she complimented Reina a bit more and Kumiko sounded like she clashed with the Reina a bit too much, which I believe went against the intention of the piece and is the reason Reina picked Mayu even knowing which one was Kumiko and the fact that Kumiko was the better Eupho player. As heartbreaking as this was, when everything was said and done and it was finally announced that they got gold, it felt so much more cathartic because of it. All that pain and sorrow and the frustrations Kumiko went through amounted into one of the best and most emotional climaxes to any series I've watched.

Yes, but it is an old-fashioned yuri, where they never ever actually admit that what they are feeling is genuine romantic love, and in which the creators maintain plausible deniability. It's a shame; the scene has changed, and there's no need to do that anymore, but Kyoto Animation seems stuck in the old school.
