Likewise. I find them addictive; my trees are still pretty young and I often find myself harvesting some of the fruits before they are as ripe and sweet as they should be. Such a sweet tart juicy explosion of flavor in the mouth! And I think eating the rind must make them one of the most nutritious fruits out there.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Thanks for the recipe! I hope some day I will have enough kumquats to try that. Hmmm…I guess I could accumulate the juice in batches and freeze it in jars or ice cube trays….

I use my Kumquats to season chicken prior to bbq. Wring out 3 or 4 into a ziplock, including the rind. Add diced onions and and chicken breasts (3 fruit per breast is a good ratio). Let it sit in the fridge for a day, then bbq! I gotta say though, I think a martini is a WONDERFUL idea, and I love lemon drops, so I'm all in!

That’s a great tip! I love using kumquats in savory applications. I mean, they're tasty, but the mix of tart and sweet with meat is just ideal in our books!

One thing I can grow! I have a tiny-tiny kumquat tree on my windowsill - and I had 5 fruits on it! 😀Their flesh tastes like a sweet lemon. Probably I could make a vodka with kumquat juice (200 ml of vodka + 1 crushed kumquat). Your trees and kumquats look absolutely impressive!

That's one of the wonderful things about kumquats. They do very well in pots, so you can grow them just about anywhere!

I'm still working on harvesting the one bush in the back. Go out to pretend I'm a gardener and eat some. go back out to check the garden beds, eat some. Eventually this onerous task will be completed! the the windbreak goes in so the 1st and 2nd bloom aren't burned off. I need another peach and would like another almond, but will hunt for a fukushi.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Күн бұрын
That sounds like a fun and delicious way to harvest! I will say, the Fukushu is definitely our favorite and it sounds like you would enjoy an "extended" harvest on those as well. 😉

Nice video, thank you!. I have 2 Konquat trees and they produce lots of fruits as long as they get enough water from rain or irrigation, I like them fresh. My daughter makes Komquat marmelade and it is delicious. 2 pounds komquats + 300 gr natural sugar cane (non bleached) or more to your taste. Fruit is washed Cut the komquats and get the juice and the seed on a colander. Cut the whole peel in pieces. (this can be boring). Place juice, peel pieces and sugar to boil until it reduces its volume to your taste. (using a thick bottom pot there is not need of stirring much but it needs some). It can be canned following the hot water bath or with steam. A delicacy!

If you had to pick between loquat and kumquat, which would you choose if your criteria was: Taste And then which if your criteria was ease of growing And which if you were worried about cold. My parents 2 year old moro blood orange and Meyer lemon tree lost all their leaves from cold damage (probably got to 22 or so a couple nights this year at their house which borders 9a and 8b (they are technically 9a but right on the edge) and don’t like high maintenance trees. So wondering if we are better off taking one out and replacing it with a colder hardy fruit tree. They are 15 miles south of Tucson on the north end of Green valley.

Taste would go to the loquat, hands down. Loquats are more difficult to grow overall, but both varieties should have no issues with your frosts. Kumquats are more cold hardy than most citrus and loquats thrive in our Winters.

I thought the Meiwa was supposed to be sweet in skin and flesh? 🤔
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Күн бұрын
The skin is sweet, but the flesh is still tart. The biggest drawback to the Meiwa is the amount of seeds compared to flesh. Otherwise it's a very good kumquat.

@ oh damn. I bought one here in Australia as multiple sources here said that variety was different to other Kumquats, being no sourness… 😕
