Mulberries may be our all around favorite fruit to grow here on the farm. They are just amazing producers for us and with a little care will thrive in our desert environment. Today we're pruning our Shangri La Mulberry trees for maximum production!

Hola!! The pistachio trees are doing good. They grew fairly slow, but are about 7' tall after this growing season. It will be a while before we see any nuts though.

If you’re only growing Morus Alba you really are missing out on the exquisite superior flavor and profile of the highly revered Morus Nigra.

Those three branches you cut to your right at 4:41 are the types I sometimes get all over a tree. To me, they look like water sprouts. I get them on citrus and on my stone fruit trees. They grow quick, and dont seem to ever bear fruit. Is it OK for those to be taken back to the branch regardless of wear they are on the tree, or should I head them way back in hopes that they'd spit out spurs/sprouting branches? Are those an indicator of anything that I might be doing wrong? (too much nitrogen, etc?). Thanks as always

I don't know that I would call those water sprouts on a mulberry tree. They are new growth, but that happens all over the tree after pruning. Which is where your fruit sets. Citrus generally sends out new growth all over the tree and eventually it turns into fruiting wood over time. Stone fruit will have water sprouts, but any of them can be trained to induce fruiting spurs except peaches. They don't have fruiting spurs as they set fruit on wood that is a year old. Hope this helps Kevin.

Hmmm…I was going to wait to prune my mulberries AFTER fruiting, hoping for more fruit. But now I’m thinking doing my pruning now might be smarter, to encourage more branches to bear that fruit. Maybe I should still wait to prune my Jan’s Best Dwarf Ever bearing AFTER fruiting to induce another round of fruiting, but maybe I’d better prune my Shangri-La, Black Pakistan, and Oscar NOW. My impression is that those 3 varieties won’t fruit a second time even if I DO prune them after the first flush of fruit? But I’m not sure. Anyone know whether I could induce those 3 varieties to fruit a second time by a late spring pruning or not?

The Shangri La and Black Pak generally don't fruit a second time (at least in our experience). They try to put on a few fruit in the Fall, but it's rare that anything ripens. Not sure on the Oscar.
