As a vegan from middle class family, i can say that a lot of indian food is vegan and easily affordable. I just had to remove milk products from my diet. Infact, we don't even realise how often we eat vegan food be it staple (dal-subzi-roti-rice) to cuisine (idli, dosa, chhole bhature and more). All we have to do is to be aware and kind🌱

Yes once my friend's mother was in dire need of a cook, I arranged a lady cook and took her. Later they rejected her because she was good in every other respect but she was not upper caste enough that she could be hired. They wouldn't feel comfortable eating food prepared by a lower caste woman. However, restaurant food, wedding food etc is acceptable!

It was not castiest notion though it become later that. Purity and impurity of food is well documented in ancient litrature. Spritual aspirants used that guide have food which keeps the mind calm and body healthy which eventually helped spritual path that is going from mind to no mind achaiving pure/very consciousness/awareness which is also called Brahman/void .. and person who achieved that state were Brahmin. See there was nothing castiest about it. Later ego, status and greed distroyed everything.
