As the legend goes,Sooran, the demon king infuriated the peacock, the sacred vehicle of Murugan.
He told the bird that both Garudan, the sacred vehicle of MahaVishnu and Hamsa, the Swan, the sacred vehicle of Saraswati, could fly higher and faster than it. In anger, the peacock swallowed both Garuda and Hamsa.
Vishnu prayed to Murugan to have his vehicle returned. Muruga requested the peacock to release them and the peacock, realising it's mistake, complied. The peacock, then, prayed to Murugan by doing penance at this place.
This hill resembles the shape of a peacock. The view from the temple windows is serene. One can hear the sounds of parakeets inside the temple. However, there any many happily playing outside on the roof, making such a din.
Shanmuganathar stands with both his consorts, Valli and Devanai. 200 gradual steps lead us up to see his beauty.
Do take some bananas or fruit as an offering for the temple elephant at the foothill.
