So after a few minutes of google searching and finding your video I find myself using my regular pretty old fan (not intended to be use as a weapon and liable to break) as practice and am now interested in the use of a fan for self defense. Seems fun.

If I’d like to start carrying around a fan in my handbag for cooling and self defense, is there a minimum size that would be useful for kung fu? A lot of these techniques seemed really familiar since I have trained in wing chun and tai chi with the knives, butterfly swords, jian, and sometimes kali sticks. For some of these things the appropriate length is measured according to your body, and I was wondering if the fan is like that too.

Unfortunately, I have never seen a large selection of fan sizes. I have two sizes in my school, and both are very good for effectiveness. The shorter is ten inches and works well with smaller hands. If I ever get back to China, I will look for more fan options in some of the shops. You raise a great question!

Yes! I also used to practice with the steel fans but they all broke after lots of use.

Sir do bamboo fan works fine in self defense I never use a kungfu fan before?

Yes. Not as good as a cane though. But you can strike with it and block with it and it’s better they cut your fan than your hand or arm or worse!
