Shaolin Soccer is also a lot of fun, and you will see a lot of the same people in it. Stephen Chow had a string of hit movies that he wrote, directed, and starred in, each getting more worldwide recognition. He was great at getting a bunch of fantastic martial artists who may not have the appearances for leading roles, and mixing action with humour. Shaolin Soccer really broke through, with Kung Fu Hustle being even bigger a couple of years later. Unfortunately, his next film (CJ-7) didn't do nearly as well, and he stopped doing all 3 in the same movie. His earlier stuff is also fun, but with lower budgets.

"Who are you? No wonder he can take his wife's beatings..." The rascal landlord, played by Yuen Wah, is one of my favorite characters in Kung Fu Hustle (along with his abusive wife 😅). Yuen Wah traditionally plays villains (check him out in Eastern Condors, a Hong Kong remake of Rambo 3), so it is nice to see him play a hero here.

Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy." The actress who played landlady didn't originally intend to be in this film. She had been in some movies, including the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. But she had retired from acting in the eighties. She accompanied a friend to an audition for Kung Fu Hustle, where Stephen Chow noticed her smoking a cigarette with a sarcastic look on her face. He offered her the role without an audition. This movie is brutal, but the action is so ridiculous and over-the-top that it doesn't bother me. It's like watching Elmer Fudd shoot Daffy Duck. In the scene where Landlady is in the car with the Axe Gang boss, the threatening gestures she makes are taken from the movie The Way of the Dragon, in which Bruce Lee made the same set of gestures. Other movie references include Landlady saying "Tomorrow is another day" (a line from Gone with the Wind), Donut saying "This could be the end of a beautiful friendship" (from the last line of Casablanca, "This could be the beginning of a beautiful friendship"), the blood coming from behind the doors in the insane asylum (from the blood coming out of the elevators in The Shining), Donut saying "What are you preparing to do? in his death scene (from Sean Connery saying "What are you prepared to do?" just before he dies in The Untouchables).

One of my favorite movies of all time, with so many great and memorable charakters like the landlord, the gay tailor (who has the most "masculine" fighting style), the leader of the Axe Gang, etc. And besides of all the absurd action and funny scenes there is still the really nice lovestory with the mute girl.

One of the two men who was cast as a man using that instrument as a weapon was the late, great Fung Hak-On. He played a lot of villainous roles during his career and was a great martial artist as well. He is probably best known to a lot of people for being in a prominent role in Jackie Chan's first _Police Story_ (1985) but also appeared in Jackie's first major hit _Snake in the Eagle's Shadow_ (1978) when you briefly see him at the beginning in one of his rare good-guy roles, as well as a grandmaster in one particular scene in the Donnie Yen-starring film _Ip Man 2_ (2010). Sadly oesophageal cancer took him away from us in 2016 at just 67 years old, but what an impact he made as some of the most memorable villains in classic Hong Kong action cinema history.

Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is a masterpiece with a complex story that connects together very well from top to end, paced very well, and the music and sound effects are excellent, they purposely chose to record the music from live orchestra. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) has actually a lot of references to hong kong movies. It is not a parody but paying homage, giving respect and tribute to the inspirations of what Stephen Chow watches when he is growing up. Stephen Chow also said his idol is Bruce Lee. Stephen Chow put in a lot of hong kong and also western references, - Roger Rabbit style (lips bitten by snakes), - speedy gonzales (fat woman running), - the pigsty alley village is based on the lawless slum in hong kong, called Kowloon Walled City, ruled by gangsters. History traced this city back to the year 960 during the Song dynasty (960-1279). By 1990 the walled city contained 50,000 residents. It is demolished by 1994. - the landlady gesture in the car with the axe gang boss is exactly what bruce lee did, which is directly from classic bruce lee movie, The Way of the Dragon (1972). You see this outfit worn by Jet Li too in Fearless (2006). - spiderman reference, about with great power comes great responsibility line. - The Shining reference, when the blood pour out from the beast's cell. - This movie's time period is during the era of 1920s. - The Axe Gang is based on the real Axe Gang founded in 1921 in Shanghai around Japanese Occupation. - The top hats you see on the gangsters is a reference to the hats in Gangs of New York (2002) - Toad style is from chinese martial art novel. - The landlady and tenants is directly from classic hong kong movies, The House of 72 Tenants (1973). - The fierce landlady with the passive husband is also from another classic hong kong movie. - The buddhist palm is fictional and derives from classic novels and made into a classic hong kong movie and also has its own drama series. - the landlord style is tai chi that uses flows. so he looks slimy and has good evasion and transfer the energy flow directed at him to another direction. - the landlady scream power, called Lion's Roar, is also from classic hong kong movie, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (1978). - the fight scene with many axe gangsters and them flying in the sky is reference to Matrix 2 Reloaded (2003). - why Sing or landlady/landlord didn't kill, because the philosophies of different chinese martial arts is not about killing, but self defense, forgiveness, discipline, spreading love, not evil, etc. before the tailor dies, he said : "What are you prepared to do?" is a reference to The Untouchables (1987) dying scene. In the ending where the metal flower flew to the Ice Cream girl, it is a reference to Forrest Gump (1994) ending scene with Tom Hanks and the floating feather. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) took references from Kung Fu Hustle and also gave special thanks to Kung Fu Hustle in their credits. Watching Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is like watching the entire history of Hong Kong cinema. Anyone, especially those from Hong Kong, who can get the references will be extra blessed. Comedy is the genre that's most difficult to make. It's easy to make people cry. It's difficult to make people laugh again and again even when you watch repeatedly. In this sense, this movie is a piece of master work. Stephen Chow could not surpass himself after this movie. Your reaction is good because you accept the setup without trying to be "smart". Some people's reaction was like "This is ridiculous. People are flying." "People don't run like Road Runner." Yet people accept Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider man. Toads are one of the Five Vermin/Poisons in ancient (about 7th Century BC) Chinese philosophy known as Legalism, as especially espoused in an essay by Han Fei (in the 2nd Century BC). Just FYI you watched an edited version which took out some violence and blood. There's also the dude that had his but out in the panning shot and he was actually taking a dump onto a piece of paper. This movie is so great and fits the mold of the more classic kung fu movies. Villages, gangsters and kung fu. This movie subverted my expectations when they killed off the three masters and then revealed the two other ones. The pantomime that the landlady did in the car was one that Bruce Lee did in one of his films. Donut speaking English and reciting a line from The Untouchables was great as well. This is my favorite Stephen Chow film. People like Shaolin Soccer but I like the more traditional storyline for this. Great reaction! Oh and the dude that played Paris was in Shang-Chi as the old man with the bow that was training Katy.

FYI, this movie have references to another martial arts story called “Return of the Condor Heroes”. The married couple’s names are taken from those main characters which are way better looking(the names were supposed to be a joke). The frog stance comes from an antagonist who specializes in that fighting technique. Many Stephen chow movies references parts of Hollywood films to make the story interesting if spotted.

There's just something awesome about a gangland group of axe-wielding killers that can also perform the Latin Hustle as a group like that~ Hustle's an awesome and unusual movie, the director (and star) Stephen Chow reportedly cast the Landlady for her level of attitude on display _while attending her friends' visit to the audition, she wasn't even there to try out~_ And even with all these oddities and nods going into it, the movie's also a great standalone flick, a kind of Wuxia film (kung-fu stories of heroics, villainy, and martial arts) I hear tell Chow has expressed interest in making another one too! i remember seeing advertisements of this before it came out, and seeing the end part where the "chosen one" sent all the gangsters flying into the air, and thinking this is a "Matrix" wannabe film, so i didn't pay any attention or watch it for years. little did i know, the same people who worked on the matrix, also worked on this film. another thing the Land Lord, and Lady were stunt performers in the 70's and 80's, the Land Lady was a Bond girl, and the Land Lord was a stand in for Bruce Lee, when there was a stunt too dangerous for Bruce, this guy took his place. great reaction! 👍

Great movie! A movie I would watch from time to time. I know the comment section others would suggest "Shaolin Soccer" because it's another of his film's that did well in the US. If your interested of his other films I recommend "Chinese odyssey: Pandora's box" and " Chinese odyssey: Cinderella"

You should watch Shaolin Soccer (2001) next. Since you enjoyed this one. Shaolin Soccer (2001) is also brilliantly Directed, Produced, Written, and Acted as main character by the legendary Stephen Chow himself. Same as Kung Fu Hustle (2004). Please get the original cantonese language version, hong kong version. That's means preferably not the Americanized version if you can find it. I think English streaming sites would all be americanized version (which is also cantonese spoken, but they edit in English text overlays and dubbed sound effects, changed some music). Stephen Chow made both films emphasizing for the international audience in mind. It is his first big break into western market. He is already very famous and well known in Hong Kong, south-east asia, Asia in general. We love his unique style and humour. By the way, just last month, Stephon Chow announced to the public that he has finished the story draft for Shaolin Women's Soccer. He is auditioning for female actresses and we are finally getting another Stephen Chow directed movie (which is very rare nowadays), which is also a sequel to Shaolin Soccer (2001), after 22 years.

This was definitely one of those movies where you walk in expecting a goofball comedy but in the end you just get a great kung fu movie. Pretty much everything up to the music twins is just silly, but once they show up the whole movie's tone shifts and it's actually serious. Not that there aren't still jokes or absurdities, but that it steers away from the jokes and tries to deal with a serious situation. Once that is handled it can go back to being silly like the booger kid at the end.

one of my favorite films. i loved the land lord and land lady and rabbit tooth jane as they called the character who ran around in her lingerie lol. I dont think ive seen any of her films back when she was younger but i do remmeber seeing an old martial arts film with the actor who played the landlord and he looked very handsome and aged well too. I wished they had made a sequel to this I would have loved to see these characters again maybe more on the land lady and land lord if they had a sitcom series of their life running pig sty alley I'd watch it

I really don't think the sign language was gibberish. Just like speaking languages, there are different kinds of sign language and dialects to them. In fact, in China, there are 3 dialects of Chinese sign language -- Northern, Southern, and Hong Kong Sign Language. However, since I truly don't know what those signs are, I can't say if it's wrong, but I doubt Steven Chow would have gotten that wrong.

So the whole thing about why our goofball hero is so bad at kung-fu is because while he learned the damn pamphlet right, his chi was misaligned. After Granny and her husband fixed him up, all the blockages were gone and his abilities actually _worked._ The really hilarious thing is that I seriously doubt that old monk knew the pamphlet had actual kung fu in it.

I LOVE this movie.....first saw it in theaters in dub ( which I love btw) but its just such a great movie and callback to Martial arts films. Whenever its on I will 100% watch it and the dub and sub are not that far off...fun fact lol

Great reaction! One film I'd recommend is a Kung Fu classic called: "The Five Deadly Venoms". It's got a great story, excellent fight chorography, costumes, characters and it's a mystery with a twist ending. Worth checking out. Have a good day!

Great action film! The only thing I never liked was the scene of the young defenseless lady being shot in the back in the beginning. In Stephen Chow's other film, "Journey to the West", another innocent person is killed at the very beginning that was even far worse (Though I think it may have been done to stay accurate to the original ancient Chinese mythology story).
