Thanks for watching in original cantonese language, so you get all the nuances and the intention from the voice tonation, as there will always be something lost in translation with dub. It was really fun watching your 2 reactions and enjoyment to this movie. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is a masterpiece with a complex story that connects together very well from top to end, paced very well, and the music and sound effects are excellent, they purposely chose to record the music from live orchestra. Kung Fu Hustle (2004) has actually a lot of references to hong kong movies. It is not a parody but paying homage, giving respect and tribute to the inspirations of what Stephen Chow watches when he is growing up. Stephen Chow also said his idol is Bruce Lee. Stephen Chow put in a lot of hong kong and also western references, - Roger Rabbit style (lips bitten by snakes), - speedy gonzales (fat woman running), - the pigsty alley village is based on the lawless slum in hong kong, called Kowloon Walled City, ruled by gangsters. History traced this city back to the year 960 during the Song dynasty (960-1279). By 1990 the walled city contained 50,000 residents. It is demolished by 1994. - the landlady gesture in the car with the axe gang boss is exactly what bruce lee did, which is directly from classic bruce lee movie, The Way of the Dragon (1972). Look for "Bruce Lee knuckle cracks his fists from "Way of the Dragon" ". here : /watch?v=BQZG1qZNxUA - the powers of the 3 heroes are traditional powers, but the powers of the two musicians are mystical so they are more powerful than traditional powers. - each of the 3 powers, the kick, the staff, the rings are all from classic hong kong movies - the 2 blind musicians' powers is also from classic hong kong movie. Them using the zither instrument is reference to Deadful Melody (1994). The chinese literal translation of this title is "Six-Fingered Demon Musician". - the look of the 2 musician assassins with sunglasses is reference to The Blues Brothers (1980) looks. - When the landlord said, "who knew the beast could unlock the chi flow", and then the landlady said, Stephen Chow is "The One", referencing Matrix (1999). - the white and black outfit that Sing (Stephen Chow) wears is what bruce lee wore from classic bruce lee movie in Enter the Dragon (1973). You see this outfit worn by Jet Li too in Fearless (2006). - spiderman reference, about with great power comes great responsibility line. - The Shining reference, when the blood pour out from the beast's cell. - This movie's time period is during the era of 1920s. - The Axe Gang is based on the real Axe Gang founded in 1921 in Shanghai around Japanese Occupation. - The top hats you see on the gangsters is a reference to the hats in Gangs of New York (2002) - Toad style is from chinese martial art novel. - The landlady and tenants is directly from classic hong kong movies, The House of 72 Tenants (1973). - The fierce landlady with the passive husband is also from another classic hong kong movie. - The buddhist palm is fictional and derives from classic novels and made into a classic hong kong movie and also has its own drama series. - the landlord style is tai chi that uses flows. so he looks slimy and has good evasion and transfer the energy flow directed at him to another direction. - the landlady scream power, called Lion's Roar, is also from classic hong kong movie, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (1978). - the fight scene with many axe gangsters and them flying in the sky is reference to Matrix 2 Reloaded (2003). - why Sing or landlady/landlord didn't kill, because the philosophies of different chinese martial arts is not about killing, but self defense, forgiveness, discipline, spreading love, not evil, etc. before the tailor dies, he said : "What are you prepared to do?" is a reference to The Untouchables (1987) dying scene. In the ending where the metal flower flew to the Ice Cream girl, it is a reference to Forrest Gump (1994) ending scene with Tom Hanks and the floating feather. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) took references from Kung Fu Hustle and also gave special thanks to Kung Fu Hustle in their credits. Watching Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is like watching the entire history of Hong Kong cinema. Anyone, especially those from Hong Kong, who can get the references will be extra blessed. In a 2010 interview, actor Bill Murray called Kung Fu Hustle "the supreme achievement of the modern age in terms of comedy". In 2021, American filmmaker James Gunn called it "the greatest film ever made".

Kung Fu Hustle (2004) You should watch Shaolin Soccer (2001) next. Since you enjoyed this one. Shaolin Soccer (2001) is also brilliantly Directed, Produced, Written, and Acted as main character by the legendary Stephen Chow himself. Same as Kung Fu Hustle (2004). Please get the original cantonese language version, hong kong version. That's means preferably not the Americanized version (which is also cantonese spoken, but they edit in english text overlays, dubbed over the original sound effects, changed some music to english music, and simplified the english subtitles). WORST of all, they cut down 22 minutes of the original movie length (original 102 minutes to 80 minutes americanized version) Stephen Chow made both films emphasizing for the international audience in mind. It is his first big break into western market. He is already very famous and well known in Hong Kong, south-east asia, Asia in general. We love his unique style and humour. By the way, just last month, Stephon Chow announced to the public that he has finished the story draft for Shaolin Women's Soccer. He is auditioning for female actresses and we are finally getting another Stephen Chow directed movie (which is very rare nowadays), which is also a sequel to Shaolin Soccer (2001), after 22 years.

(sees thumbnail) YES. LET'S GOOOOOOOOO! I love the landlady so much. I don't know if anyone has already mentioned this, but the actress who played her had actually retired from acting, was dropping off someone else for an audition, and they liked her look so much they convinced her to come out of retirement to be in this movie. >w

I love you kids. You produce good stuff. In the beginning they squish a soccer ball & tell the kids no more football. This refers to the film he made before this, Shaolin Soccer (equally funny & maybe a tad more whacky). Note that the actor who played the landlord of Pig Sty Alley can also be seen more recently as a village elder in Marvel's Shiang Chi & The Legend Of The Ten Rings.

Stephen Chow's salute to the pop culture of his youth. He not only cast 1970s kungfu actors (Landlady, Tailor, Baker, Beast, Beggar, plus a few still active in the 2000s like Landlord & one of the Harp Killers), but also delightfully sprinkled the movie with fighting style references, i.e. Buddha's Palm (a famous movie/TV/comic genre of old), Deadly Melody (Ni Kuang's wuxia novel, also made into a Shaw Bros film, plus HK & China TV series), Toad Skill (one of the bosses in the Jin Yong's Condor Heroes trilogy), the 5 fictional manuals at the end (Nine Swords Of Dugu 独孤九剑, Single Yang Finger 一阳指, Nine Yin Scripture 九阴真经, Eighteen Dragon-Subduing Palms 降龙18掌 all originated in Jin Yong's novels, while Thousand-Hand Divine Palms 千手神掌 was the syllabus for Buddha's Palm).

Just an amazing movie. Although a comedy it also has some really good action scenes. I call old martial arts movies "Snap-stick" a play on slap stick and the snapping sound martial arts movies make when someone makes an attack. This feels like an homage to those old school films.

Could not love this reaction more. Thank you for it & thank you for being so conscientious as to show it in Stephen Chow's original Cantonese language, which was the standard in most of the great Hong Kong films before the Mainland handover. Like many commenters here, I hope you will also watch the film prior to this, Shaolin Soccer. Small notes of interest; Yuen Wah, playing the landlord, was part of a small group of cinematic martial artists called The 7 Little Fortunes, which included his brother, Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung, and a fella called Jackie Chan. Many in the west may not know it was Yuen Wah who stunt doubled Bruce Lee's amazing flips & cartwheels in Enter the Dragon. Speaking of brothers, the gentleman playing the Beggar who sells "Sing" {Sing-Chi is Stephen Chow's real name) the seemingly overpriced instruction manual is Yuen Cheung-yan, the brother of the this film's fight choreographer, the legendary, Yuen Woo-ping. Making it a bigger family affair, the Beggar character is based on the titular character from 1979's Drunken Master, directed by Yeun-Woo-ping with the Master played by their father, Yuen Siu-Tin, who makes an apprentice of a whippersnapper called Jackie Chan. Both Drunken Master films are extremely enjoyable, but I think your mother would really love Drunkem Master II (Thanks to a heavenly goddess called Anita Mui). There's actually a movie based on the experiences of the Yuens, Jackie, Sammo and The 7 Little Fortunes (& Yuen Woo-ping & Angela Mao) and the torturous discpline they suffered training in Peking Opera School, called Painted Faces. There is really a whole universe of brilliant Hong Kong films that you and your mother would love in all shapes, sizes and genres... Off the top of my head: From Bruce Lee: Fists of Fury, Way of the Dragon (Return of the Dragon, as it was released outside of Asia. As adamantly pro-original language as I am, I let this one and Drunken Master II slide), Enter The Dragon (obviously) Two of the best crime dramas ever made; Infernal Affairs (Scorsese remade this as The Departed), and Election, directed by Johnnie To Jet Li: Shaolin Temple (debut), The Once Upon a Time in China series (Esp 1 & 6, {Which became the basis of Shanghai Noon)} PS: He plays Wong Fei-hung, the same real-life hero as Jackie Chan portrays in the Drunken Master films) Jackie Chan (Where even to start?): Wheels on Meals, Police Story 2, Police Story 3 {w/ Michelle Yeoh, released in the west as Supercop), New Police Story, Armour of God, Thunderbolt. And of course, Rumble in the Bronx, with the role of "The Bronx" being played by Canada :D Speaking of Michelle Yeoh, Heroic Trio, starring the other 2 biggest actresses of that time, Maggie Cheung & Anita Mui, is a wacky, badass, dark, silly Marvel-wishes-it-could superheroine tale. Wing Chun - wuxia biopic of the woman who invented the art. I can't even start on the excellent, gloriously filmed, dramatic art house perfection of the Wong Kar-wai films: My Faves, Chungking Express, Happy Together, In The Mood for Love (Great movies, but not necessarily good for reactions). A Chinese entry that is simply one of the most beautiful films ever made (Great for a reaction), Hero, starring Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, Jet Li, Donnie Yen, & Zhang Ziyi, directed by Zhang Yimou (Whose filmography is a whole other amazing thing) Besides HERO, one of my favourite movies of Donnie Yen is a high octane basher called Sha Po Lang (SPL, sometimes), co starring the legendary Sammo Hung (Also in Ip Man 2, where he chorergraphed the Ip Man films as well as this one), which really helped make him an A-Lister. Sorry this is so long. I'd have sent it in an email, but you don't list one. I'm thrilled that you've reviewed Kung Fu Hustle. Thanks for the fun & be well.🥰

Hey guys, I really enjoyed this reaction. I don't know if you have seen After Hours, it's a dark comedy by Martin Scorsese, but it's a really funny movie from 1985 and has many stars in it. Have you seen Only The Brave with Josh Brolin from the Goonies or Deadpool 2 as Cable. (If you haven't seen the 2 Deadpool movies you must check them out). 12 Strong is another movie all reactors have overlooked, but a GREAT movie. Another comedy I'd love to see your reaction to is Stripes with Bill Murray if you haven't seen it. Keep up the reactions, I really enjoy this mother-and-son team. You make me laugh a lot.
