I agree that the Furious 5 showing up less is a good thing it shows how capable Po is without them if anything reminder in the 2nd film he was using them for platforming and weapons. Not only that but it also shows that their lives don't revolve around Po since in the movie they give reasons as to why they're gone because they're busy helping other regions.

Pretty solid review! Better than most other reviews I've seen for this movie. I think people are being a bit too dramatic with the hate for this movie haha. I also prefer The Chameleon over Kai. I wish she was executed a bit better but I think the intent having her parallel Po is fascinating. She is a creature who on the outside seems unfit for kung fu, like Po, but instead of overcoming her insecurities and pushing through like he did, she internalized them and let society's preconceived notions about her consume her. The idea of a villain being an allegorical "bad ending" version of Po's arc is pretty cool I feel.

I’d say this movie is much weaker than the 3rd. The 3rd is closer to the first two than it is to the fourth one. The 3rd one had a missing element of tone, there was some moments where you can get the sense they wanted to go for in terms of telling a darker story but it only picked up by the time Li is completely distraught from his father (Deleted scenes of the movie also showcase the original direction; ie Kai was originally going to kill Po with his bare hands and that’s how he gets transported to the spirit realm) But what it wasn’t missing was the emotional connections, underlying message, and the overall message of who you are. It showcased the adopted father v biological father dynamic, and it ultimately concluded what Po means to be him. There could be complaints about Kai. But he ultimately served as Po’s biggest fear, to lose everyone he ever loved. Even Shen ignored the other Furious Five members and Tai Lung did as well. Kai however wanted it all no matter what. That’s why Po was absolutely terrified when Kai defeated him. The fourth one didn’t have that much of an underlying message. While Po realizes that change is good, he never really had any self actualization of himself. Him feeling to change didn’t seem to be integral to defeating the Chameleon. Unlike the past movies where it was essential to use what you learned to defeat the villain. Although I kind of you wished you pointed out Ping and Li’s roll in this movie. In the fourth movie I actually liked them considering they actually had an adventurous role in this one.

You know despite having the lowest budget out of all 4 movies, it's pretty impressive that Kung Fu Panda 4 Animation looks really good at it is. If i i'm gonna compared it to the first three movie, i would say it's better than Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 but not as good as Kung Fu Panda 3. I don’t think it looks anywhere near as appealing as the first 2. KFP4 has such an overly sanitised look and feel to it as though all the models are over some weird Snapchat filter or something, and the use of dynamic colouring is completely absent. We get no scenes like Po infiltrating Shen’s firework factory, a hellish landscape brutally suppressed in a bloody red tone, to symbolise its evil. Or the distinct blue that accompanies Tai Lung in his scenes. In fact, KFP4 was pretty poor in using colouring for symbolism overall and didn’t have any striking visuals comparable to the first 3.

My review is a bit similar. I agree with everything you said about the Furious Five, it being slightly better then the 3rd, etc. However, I really enjoy Aquafina's voice and was excited to see her in this. And from the first scene I loved her and her character. What I think the writers did really well is that this film can serve either as the start of a new trilogy with Po and Zhen as co-leads or if it doesn't work out, a nice epilogue to the franchise. If you notice, Po doesn't learn any new moves in this film that he did in the previous ones because he's reached his fullest potential as the Dragon Warrior, and is ready to now pass on that knowledge to someone new and keep this cycle going. And I like this dilemma he's in. One could say it's a repeat of the third film where he has to change from a student to a teacher, but he was still the Dragon Warrior then. Here, he has to give up what has defined him for years, what made him into something, and that terrifies him. It was a really good lesson and a natural progression of Po's character. So, if this is the last film, I like where it ends with him choosing a successor; a nice epilogue to the franchise. As for Zhen, I agree with her being a good change from the black or white people Po dealt with in the past trilogy. And while it was predictable how her story was going to go, it was the way they did it with the good emotion and bond with Po that made work regardless. A worry I saw from people was that Zhen was going to be one of those characters that was perfect at everything and outmatch Po to say she's a worthy successor. But no, she wasn't perfect, and I like that ending montage of her training and how she was struggling to train with the Five. Like you, if there is a fifth, I am eager to see her again and her continuing development with Po. They need to strike a good balance between them as they don't want people complaining that Zhen is stealing the spotlight from Po's own film. What I would really like them to do is have a lot of parallels from the previous films in Zhen's story. Like the film opens up with her first mission as the Dragon Warrior, but fails spectacularly like Po's first teaching lesson, then everyone starts questioning Po's choice, like people starting questioning Oogway's choice, before finally having Po comfort Zhen in a similar way that Shifu comforted Po where he tells her that he wants her to be her and not him. That would give a good story for both of them as Po passes on everything he's learned on the Zhen and see how he really has mastered himself and Zhen struggles to live up to Po's legacy which is different because she was a criminal and foxes are regarding as untrustworthy animals, so they could play into the stereotypes that Zootopia did and see people think she's not worthy simply because she's a fox. There's a lot of potential for this new dynamic and I am eager to see what they do.

Something that I noticed that could have brought up this movie from being good to great was The Chameleons back story. SPOILERS She has the same back story as Po. She wanted to learn Kung Fu but was turned away and was refused to be taught every where she went. After so many rejections she became resentful and turned to magic. Can't really say Po could have done the same but he was kicked down so much in the first movie as well. There are some parallels there that I think could have been explored more and could have elevated the movie some. Also I too didn't mind no Furious 5. Its not their story, also I didnt mind the little Tai Lung either. What we got was good, and it was interesting seeing him humbled after being in the spirit world. TBH though Shen was also fairly calm so I gotta wonder what death does to a person there.

There's a review of the film by Smarty Pants, and his interpretation of the Dragon Warrior is creating a legend out of nothing because if skill and wisdom were factors Po would not have been chosen in the first place. Zhen got chosen because she was a nothing thief in a similar sense that Po was a nothing son of a noodlemaker.

No, this is a below average cartoon with wasted potential. The return of the villains, whom the trailer choked on, was no good; they didn’t even help Po with his victory. Tai Lung returned, said a couple of phrases and disappeared. It’s as if Shen and Kai are not in this “cartoon” The Chameleon is nobody, because Kai at least had a backstory. What I feel most sorry for for Tai Lung. He not talking to his father, not forgiving him. And the title Dragon War is not given deservedly.This cartoon is a waste of your time 4/10

I feel like Dreamworks is now suffering from a Pixar problem. After releasing what many people consider one of the best animated films of all time (Puss in boots the last wish) you’re ok or mediocre films just looks like trash, because people are now expecting great things from you. I remember like it was yesterday when Dreamworks got everyone’s hopes up with movies like the Bad Guys and Puss in Boots 2, even movies like Boss Baby 2 and Croods 2 was very funny. Bro it is not better then kung fu panda 3 kung fu panda 3 has stakes and po has to defend his tribe as its last hope and must learn to be a leader and introducing chi to defeat Kai. Kung fu panda 4 is legit just po holding back the entire time even with the chameleon absorbed all the kung fu from all other masters he barely even used his chi and let zhen to take care of it then 1 tapped her and brought it all back like it was nothing t with a 10 minute in total of all fights action scene. New characters were pretty rushed and they made po look weak. In all other movies po learned a lesson got stronger all he did was give a terrible quote then pretty much passed on the main character to a rushed side character, and also they did my boy tai lung and Kai dirty where’s his redemption. If they weren’t gonna have the serious five at least add like tigres
