The best part about Season 1 to Season 2 is you see Nolan's reaction from the line of "You, Dad. I'd have you." There's no time jump. We get to see the torment that line sends him through as we follow him through space. He completely loses all faith in his cause because he realized Mark was right and that they'd still have each other to help each other through their grief of losing all their friends and loved ones and watching Earth turn to dust. It finally cracked Nolan's psyche and he almost kills himself because of what he did to his own son.

I love Invincible because on the surface it seems like yet another superhero show that says that the very notion of a superhero helping people is absurd, but when watching the show it makes you root for Mark when he becomes the heroic persona Omni-Man was merely pretending to be. It's not a deconstruction of the superhero genre; it's a reconstruction of it.

Nolan and Mark have such an interesting dynamic with season 2. We've seen evil men turn good and our heroes broken, but having a father-son dynamic where each party is in pain. Yet, Mark capitalizes on his anger to shield him from pain, utterly unaware of how similar he is to Nolan, a unique storytelling device. I can't wait to see the second half of season 2.

Nolan doesn't completely lack empathy, though. There are a couple moments where he shows regret for his actions and how he's hurt the people around him. When Cecil tells him the the guardians were his friends, so he knew that Nolan didn't do it for the fun of it. And as he says this, he looks away and does the same thing when Cecil brings up debbie and mark. There's another moment when he thinks about attacking debbie, before snapping out of it and is disappointed and angry at himself for even considering it.

On that life span comparison, the show itself does a pretty good job bringing Omni Man's perspective to us in season 2 episode 4 with the bug people, which they said only live to an equivalent of 1 human year only minutes later, we see them slaughtered by other viltrumites It was almost as if the show was asking if we feel the same empathy for a species that lives that short It was crazy to see the number of people who were watching it say something along the lines of "well you were gonna die in a month or so anyways"

Even from the little bit of show we have seen, Nolan’s character is shaped by social conditioning that he begins to change as soon as mark is born. The special that shows Mark and Nolan early on, Nolan visibly shudders at the thought of harming Mark when he’s so young. Neural plasticity is heavily influenced by usage in cognitively normal individuals and can be improved in individuals with impairments. Earth being the first planet Nolan is used to conquer in the way it is all the way to his interactions with the bug people emphasize that.
@snowy68
@snowy68 11 ай бұрын
I honestly feel like Nolan's speech to mark about how he'll outlive everything is just Nolan trying to convince himself that what he is doing is right. He loved Debbie, made connections with people and enjoy everything. But he knew what he had to do eventually at a certain point, it just sounds more like he's attempting to convince himself that it does not matter because its barely any of his lifespan and its so little that he thinks he just shouldn't care since the planet is doomed at the moment anyways.
@23Raind

I think it's pretty clear that, from a thematic point of view, Mark gets his superhero name not because of his powers or winning track record (he does get beat up a lot) but rather from his human values. By holding on to his humanity and not giving in to the feelings that would make him more like a true Viltrumite. It's how he won the fight against his dad by attrition. As long as he has that, he will live up to his name.

14:40 The difference is one heavily related to the themes of Invincible; Humanity. Immortal has lived _alongside humanity_ for his entire lifespan. He's had wives, kids, grandkids, brothers in arms and kings and subjects. He's _lived lives_ in all the human ways, and keeps doing so. Whereas Viltrumites? They've only known Violence, War, Conquest, Might makes right, "If he was weak then he deserved to die". They've been so seperated from the human experience for so long that it's almost impossible to snap them out of it. It takes 20 years of love and humanity to make even one of them doubt themselves. Where Immortal has known all of the human experience, Viltrumites have known only war.

@@anthonyortiz350True and also who knows how Viltrumites brains are set up to process emotions or other things. I mean, we have insight and know they are similar to humans but they could still be vastly different in those aspects. Like they could be easily swayed one way or another when it comes to emotions and this is why we see Omni man swayed by his son by basically one sentence and other viltrumites preferring to have families when they stay on earth for one of their first times and explains why they were ok with killing the weak, and probably family because they were swayed on viltrum to think a certain way.. Plus the first part of this theory, when he compared them to humans and their brains not being able to create the same amount of synapses to when they were babies or young children is also unknown considering Viltrumites get stronger and increase in other ways as they get older basically opposite of humans. They could create even more as they get older because of this, or even because of their advances in medicine and their abilities to cure disease to change their brain chemistry and other things as the such.. who knows their story could of gone anywhere and could of made sense and explained in these types of ways.. They can’t be reasoned with, they can’t be bargained with and they certainly shouldn’t be in positions of power. What Omni Man says about humans being pets for him actually makes a lot of sense if you think about it: We love them and may even consider them part of our family, but we are a totally different species and outlife them. Just think about how squirrels must see humans: A tree is everything they need to live a happy life, what maniac would destroy forests just to build houses?! They cant understand our goals because they think much simpler and dont see the world as we see it. So maybe for Omni Man we are the dumb squirrels, dumb and cute, but unable to see the bigger picture. This does not mean he is right, but his thoughts all make sense from his pov

I've recently read the invincible comics and honestly the concept of immortality quite scary, the immortal is one of the biggest examples. After year of watching his close friends and family die including his own deaths, he's become distant he didn't want to make any meaningful connections because he was scared he would lose those he loved again and go through the same thing. Hope the same doesn't happen to invincible but, you never know.

This is actually a good point that gets explored later in the comics, Mark being together with Eve, that is basically also immortal, and so helps him keep his humanity always there by his side and prevents him from becoming tyrant like others. The same happens with the Immortal, at some point he begins to lose it ruling the planet, and Mark gets an idea to help him keep his sanity as the millenia go by.

I could tell from episode one that Invincible season 2 was going to be great. It even seems like they have a great villain origin story. Angstrom Levy seemed like a truly good person that wanted to help not only his world but many, many, many others. And when you think about it, he saved Mark's life when he took the helmet off. If he did not, the Maulers would have beat him to death. Even when he was in the middle of accomplishing his ultimate goal, Angstrom cared about someone trying to stop him enough to try and save that person's life. Now that he has the memories of all his alternate selves, combined with the pain and disfigurement he is suffering through, he now is consumed with hatred for Mark. Keep in mind that in most dimensions, Mark actually ends up siding with his father to take over the Earth, so Angstrom has a lot of memories of Mark doing terrible things.

Based on the comics, because I assume the show will still follow them very closely with what we’ve seen already, the main factors are mark being from earth and his relationships. You find out that Nolan really did change from his time on earth, and all of the other viltrumites also change because of their time on earth. They can and do experience empathy, but because they were never shown it as a child, the viltrumites needed to experience it first hand to apply it

Homelander grew up in a lab with no empathy or healthy relationships, before being put on a leash by Vought. He went from a planet full of violence and devastation to a planet full of heroes. He arrived and he was thought of as a a hero because he kept trying to protect his claim to the planet but people thought it was heroism. This video was great, and I did have this expirience during Covid 19. A lot of people just stayed at home and did practically nothing. People lost empathy or became lonely, and I noticed that after everybody went outside and lived their normal lives again. You can notice the change in character, really cool video and very deep.

Are we sure the Viltrumites aren't just able to breed with whatever they can get their hands on? Omni-Man had a kid with that weird bug lady too; so maybe they are just genetically compatible with most things, like goblins or orcs.
@Spicystachegamer
@Spicystachegamer 11 ай бұрын
It's more like their not allowed to breed with non genetically similar species, plus bugs are still made of carbon it's not like Nolan could impregnate star people.

how i took it was that human and viltrumite dna is compatible enough that when it comes to their offspring, mark ages/appears as a human/ages like a viltrumite would. when it comes to oliver, he ages very fast but its just slowed down due to the dna of his mother
@HimboVegan

I think its that they can interbreed with plenty of species. But only genetically compatible ones will get full Viltrimite powers. His kid with the bug lady won't have super powers.

This video aged like fine wine because in Season 2 Nolan is dealing with the feelings of grief and empathy for the first time and he verbatim says "Why do I feel like this? Why do I care about them" because it is truly his first time experiencing these emotions

An important detail about the Immortal is that he doesn’t have a solid grasp on his memories. He pretty much looses the entirety of his memories. He keeps things like muscle memory so fighting styles and languages but actual memories aren’t there. So while Immortal is 3000+ years old mentally he’s only as old as his last death plus his age when he gained his powers.

@TheDrexxus I think the bug thing is weird too, but I think I understand why the author did it. They bugs are there specifically because they only live 1 year. It helps put Mark in a situation where he can empathize with his father. Omni-man's whole deal was that he and mark will live for thousands of years so none of those people on earth really mattered. Mark is still only like 18 so he has no concept of what that is like. But now he has met a species that only lives for ONE year, and he has lived nearly 20 times their lifespan already even though he isn't even old. Even you guys reacting to it were trivializing those bug people's lives because they're so short lived saying things like his new wife will only live one year so it doesn't even matter. I think that is the whole point of the bug people. To give the audience, as well as Mark, some perspective. Omni-Man felt about humans how yall feel about those bugs. Thats why killing them all didn't really matter much. This comment is a repost. I wanted to drop this from another channels comment section because I feel it adds to the conversation. The channel is @yaboyroshi btw. Def check them out if you like reaction content. The comment comes from their Invincible Season 2 Episode 4 reaction.

One thing I noticed is that Nolan is as fast as the speedster in the first episode and the speedster experiences time incredibly slowly compared to normal humans. So Nolan has not only lived thousands of years but one minute to him could feel like an hour or more . This would be incredibly exhausting for him living among humans that much slower. So when he kills the pilot and says “now or in 50yrs what difference does it make” to him that’s both a really long time but also no time at all. The same way to us a 3hour lecture is a long time but also no time at all in comparison to our entire lives.

I have been playing an elf in a current D&D game for a while, she is a little over 200 years old. The way I handled her personal outlook on the matter is that since she has lived so long around shorter lived species she lives her life in chapters, closing a chapter and moving on to something or somewhere new when the lives of the people she has become close to come to an end either through misadventure or age. She has a very "Be here now" kind of outlook on life.
