I love the "I'm not hungry" line so much because it's a double metaphor, calling back to the time that we established that Po eats when he is upset, stating "I'm not upset" as well as shifu saying "when you have been trained, you may eat", with Po saying "I'm not done training".
@ethanwilson94063 жыл бұрын
I never thought of the "I'm not done training" angle before, neat.
@serpentmaster13233 жыл бұрын
I think of the second double meaning in less “I’m Not done training” and more “Eating is no longer the reason Im doing all these drills” because every drill was motivated by getting closer to food. Mainly because I feel “Im not done training” in this context makes no sense. No one who practices any art is ever “done” training, and every character in this movie knows that. The only reasonable substitution for done in this context is ‘strong enough to face ti lung’. And we know that po definitely doesn’t feel that way.
@erickremers39863 жыл бұрын
I see it as such by combining the context with their verbal showdown before they start fighting for the dumpling. The callback "When you have been trained, you may eat." combined with "You are free to eat" "AM I?!" "ARE YOU?!" flows into the "I'm not hungry" line as "I'm not done training" when you hear the meaning of what Shifu and Po are actually saying in that showdown, which in this context is "You have been trained" "HAVE I?!" "HAVE YOU?!" or maybe variable as "You are ready" "AM I?!" "ARE YOU?!" but the essence of the message remains regardless
@lacko6233 жыл бұрын
@@serpentmaster1323 Yeah, I could see it more along those lines. Basically, Shifu started training Po with the need for food as a motivator, that that's the only way he can do Kung Fu. By throwing the dumpling back to Master Shifu, and exclaiming "I'm not hungry", it could be seen as "he can now do Kung Fu and fight without the need of food as a motivator".

What I love about this movie in particular is that it has a massive lesson to parents. You can try and make your child accomodate your aspirations, and desires. And get a Tai Lung. A world of regret for yourself and no sense of self like with Tai Lung (who, when looking at the scroll said "It's nothing!"). Or, you can accommodate for your child. Because a peach tree will remain a peach tree and will only give you peaches. A good teacher changes his teachings for his students. Doesn't force his students to understand his teachings. You can have a Po, someone that understands himself and because you believed in your child's potential.

@@eleven-hopper I watched it with girl friend of mine, whose father died 2-3 days before, so I took her to the movies to see this one, you know, a lighthearted animated comedy. well. in retrospect, should have chosen something lighter, like Schindlers list, The green mile or similar. but nothing indicated that KFP2 will be that heavy.

The freeze framing of punches is definitely a more modern fighting movie thing. Tradilional Kung Fu movies tend to be very rapid-fire with the punches and kicks and weapon strikes. I'd say The Matrix is to blame, and maybe 300.

Po's depression over who he is at the start of the movie, and then slowly learning to value himself and others accepting him on his own terms, rather than him having to become something else, is such a good story to have. Still makes me cry constantly.

_Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon_ (2000) may be the best film with which to introduce yourself to kung fu movies. Directed by Ang Lee, it won multiple awards from many organizations, notably four Oscars-Foreign Language, Art Direction, Cinematography, and Original Score-and four BAFTAs-Foreign Language, Costume Design, Music, and Best Director. It's a remarkably beautiful film filled with suspenseful action.

Natalie, I love your reactions and prescience! You’d mentioned never having seen a Kung Fu movie. There are many more traditional classics with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and many more, but some of the more artistic and gorgeously wire-choreographed ones that I remember are Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero (2002). You’ve mentioned accompanying music in your reviews, and these two films have striking scores.
