+Ninja Chicken You realize that MMA includes techniques from Kung Fu right? Real Kung Fu is a complete system with grappling techniques as well. And honestly, seeing as all humans are practically the same, you will see similarities between traditional and modern martial arts because good fighting styles use what works. To put it into perspective, some Silat techniques look almost identical to some Judo techniques in the way that they are executed simply because that is the most effective way to do a certain technique to accomplish a task (like breaking or locking someone's arm). The main differences tend to lie in how they approach those techniques and the philosophies behind them. It looks like MMA to you because you grew up in an age where MMA is the dominant martial art in mainstream media. Humans have been developing wrestling techniques for over 10,000 years. Getting full mount and grappling isn't anything new, it's been around for a long time.

Grigor Mortis No, it's actually not. While I disagree with the guy, a wing chun expert would hardly allow an easy armbar like that.
@davidmichael12878 жыл бұрын
jokerhaha83 yeah. Because it's sparring. Mma fighters don't typically spar full contact because of they did they'd have to be carried into the ring. And they'd proceed to take turns hobbling towards each other, concussed, with bruised legs and unable to see through puffy eyes. A fight, whether in the ring or otherwise, is where both parties put all of their force. In training, you push yourself and your training partner. You don't try to hurt them. That doesn't make either of you a better fighter, just an asshole. Of course there's a place for training full contact. But not every time you train. Enough to be ready for it, conditioned to it, but not all or even most of the time. Maybe once a week if you train three times a week. Once a month of you train weekly, and once in your life if you train behind that mighty keyboard of yours.

This is the way I was taught to fight at my school. Much like the San shou Kung fu fights we see rapidly increasing in visibility on the world stage. It is ludicrous to think any martial art is "bad" based on some poor examples one sees on the internet. All styles Karate, Muay Thai, Kung fu, etc,etc Punch, kick, grab etc etc, basically, they are all the same. What makes the difference is how you train, realistically or for showmanship. In Ip man he says “It’s not about the style, it’s about YOU.” I think a lot of people just don’t understand that these styles are traditional and some go back hundreds or even thousands of years. They’re not just fighting systems but there’s also philosophy, art, culture, history, tradition etc that go along with them. They weren’t all developed with no holds barred competition cage fighting in mind. Wing chun for example can be an excellent way to defend yourself on the street provided that you TRAIN HARD and really practice. If it’s between someone training kung fu or knowing nothing at all then of course knowing some kung fu will benefit them. UFC did a great thing for the martial arts world by showcasing styles and clearing up a lot of that nonsense out there but now today it’s like the mindset is “if it doesn’t work in the cage it’s worthless” I don’t think it’s that cut and dry.
@FightersGuild106 жыл бұрын
It definitely isn't cut and dry! The thing that makes kung fu ineffective, is ineffective training. Kung fu can't make itself work, it just exists. It is the Kung fu practitioners' job to make their personal expression of it work.

It's good to see traditional martial artists embracing the need o fight on the ground. Even if you aren't going to win any BJJ competitions or be the next Royce Gracie (he's still relevant isn't he?) it is still important to be able to defend yourself when you hit the ground
@defjulz8 жыл бұрын
The Gracies will always be relevant as they made a huge impact on the martial arts world.

Traditional martial artist always had ground wrestling and wrestling techniques. Including kung fu. Shuai Jiao, Chin na, tiger style wrestling, shaolin wrestling, etc. It's just that people didn't train in them as often during Royce Gracie's time and got their asses beat. In matter of fact kung fu practitioners need to learn kicking, punching, trapping, joint locks, throws, and grappling before they're even considered a complete master martial artist. The Gracie's (during their time) went up against people (for the most part.) who knew didn't have the necessary skill of wrestling and have a history of changing the rules around in tournaments so they can get the advantage. I can go deeper into this but I rather not write like 6 paragraphs as to why this and that happened. You don't need b.j.j to win a fight and it's overestimated.These are just my thoughts.

That was intense! The long haired guy was aggressive as hell and the other guy had some interesting moves but rarely set them up correctly. Still, either one of them would have held their own had they been challenged by Xu Xiaodong. And damn, MMA guys just can't give Kung fu a break, can they? "Kung fu sucks because they don't spar." Here's a video of them sparring. "Well they aren't doing full contact or going for headshots." Jesus Christ they are just practicing, not fighting to win. "They used MMA anyway." Seriously, there's only a so many ways you can hit or attack someone. And Kung fu does have ground fighting, it's called Shuai Jiao. Besides, you see a LOT of Kung fu techniques in the UFC, even though none of the fighters have a background in Kung fu. This is precisely because of this overlap in techniques between styles. Of course, everyone knows that too many Kung fu schools don't train how to actually fight, but that's on the school and teacher, not the style. If they taught MMA without sparring, it wouldn't work, either.

to everyone saying this is better than ufc you have to remember that in ufc those guys are fighting to win, its a sport so they're going to train in the most effective ways to incapacitate someone to win and sometimes thats not going to be the most entertaining thing to watch thats why a lot of guys go to the ground because sometimes going to the ground is the best way for them to win or to survive against someone who is a pro striker, this kung fu sparring here is more entertainment its all over the place so it dosent look as boring. These old styles were for personal survival, not entertainment. Losing wasn't an option, but you also didn't "lose street cred" if you simply gave yourself an opportunity to escape the situation. It also takes weapons and multiple enemies into account. For the record, everybody fights to win.
@davidmichael12878 жыл бұрын
andrew pimentel I see what you're saying but I'd like to take it a step further. These two aren't fighting to win. They're just trying to improve. It's not a winner take all competition here, it's an open forum. A place to practice and experiment. The ring is no place to try something new for the first time. In the safety of a friendly sparring match like this one though, that's where you get to play with all the cool little moves you have in your tool chest.

Love what you guys are doing. Just my thoughts but if you parry a little bit smaller you can recover quicker. Just a piece of advice but all in all you guys have some great techniques

That's a good question, but I think the answer is that it's because shuai jiao (wrestling) and chin na (joint lock submissions) are traditional parts of kung fu. And throws are a big part of sanda (Chinese kickboxing). I applaud these guys for working to develop well-rounded skills.

Very cool, guys. One mistake I make is a lot of bouncing around and not staying grounded enough, this makes it easy for my opponent to shove me off balance or be caught in mid air and I cannot move when I need to. So I always try to stay grounded and in some kind of stance that I can move from.

Great light spar, theyre both good at controlling their power. Not too hard and not too soft. although imho, if both fighter consent, it'll be better if they add a little bit more power in their strikes.

Nice they are at least getting into exploring the spins and moves. A little bit of teamwork both of them can help them explore more. Remember if you really want to know what you guys are made of explore yourselves more turn it into a game of skill and build up each other more. That's what i noticed. Theres fighting to win but then theres battles where both parties are just helping each other find out other moves. Definitely I'd get more into learning how to convert these spins into power moves on both sides

@Tommy Nguyen As a Taekwondo instructor, I have to disagree. Contrary to popular belief, traditional Taekwondo is more like 50/50 when it comes to hand and leg techniques. In fact, during sparring, the scale leans heavy to hands. The reason you don't see a lot of hand techniques and grappling is because sport Taekwondo, the more popular form, doesn't use hands as much because they're worth fewer points, and grappling isn't often used in sparring until much higher levels because striking is much more efficient in self defense, where there could be mulitple and/armed attackers.

-On another note, I very much like many of the concepts in the various forms of kung fu, and I have integrated them into my sparring. Even in traditional Taekwondo, flowing is not like water as it is in kung fu.

Hello there! Francis here, yeah the following fight night Caleb came back with some elusive footwork and some really nice front leg side kicks to keep distance. It was really hard for me to close the gap to finish in the boxing and trapping range. I'll post it as soon as I can. Thanks for sharing your knowledge :)

Shorter fellow is not using his height to his advantage and trying too much to gain "high ground" on a taller opponent. If you're shorter, force your opponent to swing high and kick low; use your blocks and don't shadow (i.e. mirror) your opponent. In other words, because you are shorter you want to be as stationary as possible since there is less distance between you and the ground. You want to avoid being kicked or swept off your feet...keep the taller opponent moving around you and conserve your own resources. Aim your strikes at the flanks. That guarantees fewer punches coming at you.
