Kunstkammer Wien: Figurenuhr mit Diana auf dem Kentauren

Nach 10-jährigen Renovierungs-, Planungs- und Einrichtungsmarathon konnte die Kunstkammer Wien am 1.3.2013 wiedereröffnet werden. Zu den faszinierendsten Objekten der Sammlung gehören die Tischautomaten.
Eine komplexe mechanische Ausstattung machte es möglich, dass sich zum Beispiel dieser Kentaurenautomat zu einer vorgegebenen Uhrzeit über die Festtafel zu bewegen begann. Köpfe bewegten sich, Mäuler öffnen sich, während der Kentaur mit den Augen rollte und schließlich einen Pfeil abschoss. Erst dadurch entstand ein Trinkspiel: Derjenige Gast, in dessen Richtung der Pfeil flog, hatte einen Trinkspruch aufzusagen und seinen Trinkbecher zu leeren. Zudem bot der Automat durch seine nicht alltägliche Ikonographie - Allusionen auf die Entführung der Dejanira durch den Kentauren Nessos, den Raub der Europa, die Unterweisung des Achilles durch Chiron und die Jagd der Diana - willkommenen Anlass zu gelehrten humanistischen Tischgesprächen.

After a marathon 10 years of renovation, planning and installation the Kunstkammer Wien was finally reopened on 1.3.2013. Some of the most fascinating objects in the collection are the table automatons.
A complicated mechanism means that this centaur automaton can move across the dinner table at a given time. Heads would have turned, and the guests would have looked on in astonishment as the centaur rolls his eyes and finally shoots an arrow. Then the drinking game begins - the guest in whose direction the arrow flies has to give a toast and empty his glass. The automaton, with its unusual iconography alluding to the abduction of Dejanira by the centaur Nessus, the Rape of Europa, the Education of Achilles by Chiron and the hunt of Diana - would have provided a welcome opportunity for erudite humanist discussions.
