@@perrimecium Fun fact: red food coloring is made out of bug shells so chances are you've eaten small quantities of something kind of similar :) ...Also, the DE powder is toxic unless it's specifically food-grade (just a warning for anyone out there wondering). It's used for getting rid of parasites in animals, but it also has dehydrating properties and can allegedly help with constipation. Be sure to find reliable sources talking about safe consumption (or talk to a doctor) before eating it.

We used to use powdered diatomaceous earth as the filtering medium for our swimming pool. I think some of that is going on here. The block is filtering all of the ink particulate out of the liquid. The liquid can permeate all the way through but most of the ink has already been filtered out in the edges.
I think the bubbles were forming because there was space for water to go in but the demascuous ink was taking up so much space and the water needed to travel through air bubble spaces
