The 1999 version absolutely nailed the actual tone of this scene! It wasn’t supposed to be this epic moment IMO. Kurapika was in a state of absolute despair. He quite literally did not care whether or not he killed that mafia boss in that moment, and it was a truly fair warning. You could see it a lot more in his eyes with the 1999 version and the manga as well

Only Yorknew. It had basically an all-star production team different than the previous and later arcs. 1999 is mostly overrated with all the weird filler and changes in the beginning.

@@Ryuksgelus you tripping the 1999 was Superior in the Exam arc + the Zoldyck arc and of course in Yorknew arc and the fillers were writing by Togashi himself to add depth to the characters. 2011 is great in greed island and in chimera arc it's phenomenal

From the fact that the poison in the knife was an anesthetic, we can see that Chrollo had no intention of killing from the beginning. Also 1999 anime has an amazing Chrollo vs Zoldyck fight. Animation, atmosphere, music, everything is really good. Btw in the 2011 anime, Kurapika didn't hide his chains at the auction😂 This is one of the dumbest mistakes in this anime. In the original manga and 1999 anime, Kurapika didn't wear chains in that scene.

@@plantcrone9662 Because troupe members are now searching for the chain user. It's too risky to show the chains in a place like an auction where many people are watching. Also Uvo was careless, so "pretending a manipulator" worked, but with Uvo's death, they are more cautious than before. I don't think Kurapika thinks the same trick will work twice.

@Hamza Farooq I think Chrollo's main purpose was to buy time, and if possible, steal their abilities. If his main purpose was to steal their abilities, he wouldn't have asked Illumi to kill the Ten Dons. Because If Illumi hadn't killed the Ten Dons, he could have fought longer with them and could have more chances of capturing them.

It's come to my attention that Kurapika wearing the chains while retrieving the scarlet eyes was a Anime mistake. Kurapika was not wearing Chains at that time in the manga.

Chrollo wasn't holding back, but there are 4 conditions must be met before he can successfully steal Zeno's Nen. 1. He must witness the Nen ability in action with his own eyes. 2. He must ask about the ability and be answered by the victim. 3. His victims palm must touch the handprint on the cover of Bandit's Secret. 4. All of the above must be completed within an hour. From all of these above, if we think carefully, he already met 1st and 4th condition automatically (because the fight wasn't took so long). So, he cannot paralyzed Zeno and Silva by the poison, but what he trying until the end is to have a conversation with Zeno, provokes him to speak more in case of Zeno might be too talkative, wanna be showing off and speaking out loud about his Nen. If that happens, what Chrollo has left to do is bring the handprint and force Zeno to touch in a very fast motion, then Zeno will lost his Nen suddenly. But Zeno is too smart, he knew that Nen's condition for something like this could be anything, so he managed to keep his mouth shut and implied that he knew so well that even then, Chrollo still trying to trick him to steal his ability. That's why Zeno said that Chrollo was a cheeky kid, and Chrollo felt a bit sad that he couldn't steal Zeno's ability in the end just because Zeno was outsmarted him completely.

@@houseofaction Chrollo was referring only about a 1v1 between him and Zeno. He never mention or made clear that, if serious, he would have killed both Zeno and Silva 1v2. A serious Chrollo could probably beat Zeno, but not Zeno and Silva together.

@@houseofaction When Zeno said "if you ere actually trying to kill me" he didn't mean that Chrollo wasn't taking the fight seriously. He meant, that killing someone is a lot easier than capturing them alive. Chrollo has to hold back to keep him alive if he wants to steal his ability, but if wants to kill, he doesn't have to hold back and that's a whole different story.

Chrollo wasn't holding back, he's not more powerful than Zeno... There's a misconception everyone seem's to make on this scene. Being more powerful not always mean that you are more dangerous... I will give you a referance, Batman have won agains superman a bunch of times and he's just a human. Chrollo is like batman, he's strong in his own right, but what make him super dangerous it is his intellect and preparation. Zeno said that because Chrollo hasn't prepared to kill then, it was not his objective, thats why he said "if you really wanted to kill me, i would loose"

You're more than likely right on your first point, but for the last one, you're just assuming something that isn't proved or claimed in the manga. And according to chrollo's answer "so he could tell" it proves that he was holding back and that zeno definitely thought chrollo would beat him if he really tried, without implying that he would need preparation beforehand.

There are a tons of lethal hatsu to use instead of owl's minimising cloth if he wanted to kill Zeno instead of stalling. you mistake actual power for showy aura techniques like dragon dive. What Zeno has more of is experience to balance out chrollos advantage in natural talent.

U can reach that conclussion just like the one the OP is telling I think Chrollo can kill pretty much anyone with enough prep but I think him just literally running and pulling out a knife (not his nen specialty to be honest) and flailing Owl's cape around wasn't much of his best, and he was holding up against Zeno and Silva who were imo going full force cause I doubt they would say kill him even if u kill me too if they weren't trying even if they knew Illumi was hired

I am SO disappointed with the scarlet eyes' look in 2011, 1999's look is gnarly. Also, when Curapikt revealed his scarlet eye to Uvogin, just showing one eye, mad scary.

Also, a whole phase of the hunter exam was omitted from 2011, which included quite some team-bonding and general details on the characters. All in all, a better story....

The scene of the eyes in the manga is unsurpassable you can feel the rage and madness of kurapika that he is already overcome and that any daring towards him that person will pay with his life. the old version adapts it better because the drawing is more similar to that panel of the manga but it adapted it in another way they focused more on making it gloomy/terrifying and the voice interpretation does not help to feel the anger and madness of the original scene and the 2011 version apart from the drawing does not capture the correct interpretation either pity of the few points that does not adapt it well.

Chrollo wasnt holding back he really was trying... but trying "to take the zoldycks abilities" not kill them. He used a paralysing Ben's knife and a shrinking cloth as abilities like the ones silva and zeno posses you don't come across transmitter and emission nen uses of this caliber often and taking there abilities would make chrollo way stronger. That's why zeno said if chrollo was fighting in this stupid way even 1 on 1 zeno would win because chrollo wasn't trying to kill and was just trying to steal. But if he actually used any lethal hatsu he had in his book he could kill however chrollo would consider that a waste of potentially being able to take a really powerful nen users attack.

Is that really Pakunoda or just a similar looking auctioner? I think the latter to be honest. The Ryodan didn't have the need to be there handling personally the items. Shalnark was there just to manipulate, and Kortopi to copy ad hoc. But Pakunoda being there? Theres no need. Also, another scene I always thought they did better in the 99 version was Zeno's scanning the building using Nen. It's so subtle but showing the big En sphere while Zeno climbs down the stairs really drives the point of his power/Nen potential vs the absent scene in the 2011 adaptation. Another thing I liked more about the 99 (even though the 2011 is my favorite) but this is more subjective is the sound design of Nen activation. That deep humming bass thingy sounded really badass IMHO. More iconic and drives the point the release of aura. and its power.

How disheartening for Kurapika to retrieve the eyes not for himself but for Neon...she's one of those disgusting monsters he wants to eliminate and seeing her so happy to have them is really painful to watch... Even tho the bodies are only those of the members who were known by the mafia, so he knows other members are still alive, Kurapika thinks it's over bc he's under the belief that the Troupe's head is the key to end the Spider, so since Chrollo is 'dead' he thinks the Spider will naturally disband ...is it true tho?^^ I love the Zoldycks' professional ethics but I wonder how they handle it when it is revealed later that the members are still alive and the Dons are dead...they have a reputation to preserve after all...maybe they'll just tell the truth idk ^^ Also, that fight ended up being a 1V2 bc they expected multiple Troupe members to be there and probably in the Zoldyck family only Silva and Zeno are strong enough to handle Troupe members and Silva told them not to (well Illumi could kill some of them but he was hired by Chrollo so he's out anyway)... against Chrollo, going as a tandem would assure that the job would be done 100%, but they totally could go 1V1 and Chrollo asked about that ...at 5:05 Zeno says literally : 'if you really wanted to kill me it would be another story', bc he doesn't know about Chrollo's other stolen abilities, so one or multiple of them could be deadly for him, so Chrollo COULD kill him... but before that he said "Most likely I would win" so he's still pretty confident that he can face any surprise Chrollo has up his sleeve even though nothing is for sure ...Nen fights are so complex I love it ^^ Chrollo is a "cheeky kid" bc he's not even trying to seriously defend himself and kill them when they're giving all to kill him.. the disrespect! 😅 5:34 he nearly got killed but he's so chill... he really doesn't care about his own life, only his goal matters

Does it mean he doesn't know what would happen ? What does he mean with that? We have to look into what he said first. He said he would most likely win in a 1v1 fight. He particularly references this fight they just had. So he's saying in this fight he would have won no doubt because chrollo wasnt trying to kill him. But if chrollo would try to kill him it would be a unpredictable different story. So there's my answer. We dont know who's stronger and who would win. I always thought that dialogue between zeno and chrollo was a foreshadowing to a battle they would have had later in the series. Like episode 200 or something. But we sadly never got to see it happen.
