• The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India lists the official languages of the Republic of India and English is not one of them. At the time of writing the Constitution of India, there were only 14 languages mentioned in the 8th schedule. The others were added through various amendments and English was never one of them. 22 official languages have been mentioned in the Indian Constitution. • Currently there are six languages that enjoy the 'Classical' status in India: Tamil (declared in 2004), Sanskrit (2005), Kannada (2008), Telugu (2008), Malayalam (2013), and Odia (2014). • The PESA Act, 1996: It was enacted by Parliament in 1996 and came into force on 24th December 1996. After the Bhuria Committee recommendations in 1995, Panchayat Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) Act 1996 came into existence for ensuring tribal self-rule for people living in scheduled areas of India. • In 1973, the Dhebar Commission created Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs) as a separate category, who are less developed among the tribal groups. In 2006, the Government of India renamed the PTGs as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs). There are 75 PVTGs notified as on date in the country in 18 States and UT of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
