I would agree with you on this my shihan John Roseberry was the same way and he was a 10th degree too. I've always found that the greatest most dangerous men on the face of the Earth are also some of the most humble disciplined is the whole basis of a good foundation.

Im going back to Karate after a long long time. Its a lifestyle of service and dedication. I am inspired by Sensei. True Karate can never be a sport because it is so much more than trophies, belts and organised competitions. All these things have merit dont get me wrong. I just want to keep the traditional Karate alive before it becomes lost in the world of sport.

To complete your argument ... I am also tired of all this new movement of real efficiency, supposed! No combat sport or martial art really prepares for what can fall on the corner of our nose in an unexpected and uncomfortable situation (in jeans when they return from work in the metro, for example). It is a movement that also comes from what the media water us. All the facts that aim for sensationalism and disgust are highlighted, to the detriment of the facts speaking of positive things.

Wow. I vividly recall studying Goju Ryu and just marveling at Morio Higaonna's world-class skill even then. To think that he believes that even he is not at the highest level yet. It puts whatever efforts each of us puts forth in perspective.

Nice to see this... So many of the older martial arts have become, polluted, diluted versions of what they once were... Every move he made, looked effective and crisp... And above all, looked entirely legit for use in a self defense situation...

Atte.

Such impressive men. The dedication these men have given to their art is to be respected and honored, no matter what “style” you think is superior. Someone, with their several weeks of training, always wants to criticize the style. This is done by keyboard martial artists, that want others to think “they” are better. These are shallow people sadly. Thank you for sharing this !

Wish one day I could meet Higaonna Sensei... And learned from him...
T. Naka deserves credit for exploring karate's heritage which was originally developed as a self defence & fighting art, that has been somewhat watered down over the years but those who still practice the orthodox versions as is done here, learn the real way.

I trained Karate as a young kid but was never serious. When I was 16 YO, I decided to get serious and dedicated my life to martial arts. I lived in a neighborhood with many Koreans and Filipinos and I saw Escrima/Arnis and I knew I wanted to learn that. I made some sticks and started practicing. I met a kid who knew Silat and Escrima and he saw my sticks and I told him I was trying to learn, so he taught me Silat and Escrima.

Lo que lo ha mantenido así es el hecho de que aún es tradicional, es decir que prepondera la defensa personal sobre el deporte de contacto, y mantiene tecnicas que son para la vida real y no permitidas en torneos. Oss
