"NATO is involved" reminds me of Zelenksy's joke: - NATO and Russia is at war! - Really?! And what are the casualties? - On Russia's side - hundreds of thousands of lives lost, lot of equipment destroyed. It's a disaster. - And NATO?.. - Well.. um, NATO hasn't joined the war yet..

They're justifying their losses by saying that they're up against all of NATO. Lol, no. The weapons supplied to Ukraine are in low quantities, and very few of those are the best stuff. Even himars and atacms provided are the more limited versions. And, again, in low quantity. They're absolutely not up against NATO. And to top all that: NATO's main power is air power. There was absolutely no NATO air power in all those staggering losses. And no naval power. No ground troops. Nukes aside, (no winners in a nuclear exchange) they'd be pulverized if they were up against NATO.

I had a moment of realization when I saw the village names: Oboyan, Prokhorovka... Yep, it's the very same place, only without the Soviets' gigantic defenses and three army groups. This time it's being attacked straightforward, instead of pincers. Oh the irony of history! The historical battle of Kursk was also done at the exact same time, about two years into the war. We may be approaching the Schwerpunkt here.
@ostwelt
@ostwelt Ай бұрын
Well,it is in the same ball-park but not really like July 1943. More like March/April when Manstein first wanted to pinch off the salient before the SU had had a chance to dig in as you say. Because this has all the elements of a massive surprise because of that old SU favourite, maskirovka. Also, would have been more historically apt to have gone across the border N of Kharkov towards Belgorod. But hey-ho history doesn't repeat exactly even if it is ironic as you say. Interestingly, as others keep pointing out, the DE there at the time in their post-war memoirs or recollections all considered themselves to be fighting in UA e.g. Guy Sajer talks of it being UA lands. Although the number of ethnic UA has significantly decreased locally after 2014 and the closing of the borders as tensions subsequently escalated. Those, of course that had been in AGS in the summer of 1941 or, later knowing 1st Galicia wouldn't be at all surprised to find 80years later the UA at war with their long-time RU oppressors. As in another constant, as ever RU never learns from its own history...
@bjorntrollgesicht1144
@bjorntrollgesicht1144 29 күн бұрын
@@ostwelt indeed, the terrain is the same, but the forces, strategy, tactics, even the scale and whatnot- all are different. Sajer is an interesting example, as it is an open question where exactly did he serve and some of his memoirs are proven to be fantasy. Having said that, the place probably wasn't all that different here or there, as it was all a part of the Russian Empire, then the USSR, as Ukrainians didn't manage to carve out their state like us Poles and our Baltic friends did. I guess now the history corrects itself, it took a hundred years for Ukrainians to again make a statement of who they are, just as we did in 1920 in the Battle of Warsaw. There will be an anniversary four days forward, I hope the Ukrainians will also have something to celebrate by then. The miracle at Sudzha, ha! I actually feel sorry for the Russians. First oprichnina, then first world war, then the civil war, then the Bolshevik terror, then the second world war and then the utter mess of communism, one after the other. Yet they still do the exact same thing to the exact same results. So much suffering, yet they bring still more.
@ostwelt
@ostwelt 29 күн бұрын
@@bjorntrollgesicht1144 Good points though think we can all hold different opinions about the veracity or not of "Forgotten Soldier". I wouldn't have quoted it if I thought it a fantasy 😏 And whilst much is different from '41-3 much is the same... How does one achieve a military solution in so much territorial space? The same problem that Napoleon faced too. I have given up feeling sorry for the SU/RU. My wife is from BY. And at least they had a crack in 2020 at overthrowing a buffoon dictator. If the RU didn't since Peter-the-not-so Great that isn't the fault of the West, as they say but, the fault of its citizens. And they then reap the results... I do feel slightly sorry for the peeps Kharkov-Belgorod as this is my favourite part of all eastern Europe. Long wanted to buy a house there... Glad now I haven't - yet! That many FSU republic and their people have struck out for freedom and economic growth is one of the greatest achievements in my lifetime. As a former Cold War soldier - claiming no credit - I think this has been hugely to everyones and especially Europe's lasting benefit. If only RU had become Westernised CN wouldn't even be a C21 threat...! My fantasy now :)
@bjorntrollgesicht1144
@bjorntrollgesicht1144 29 күн бұрын
@@ostwelt hey, I really enjoy Sajer too! It's just treating him like an actual historical source- I'd be careful here, as not everything he wrote was true- for example his Hauptmann was proven not to exist, as there was no such officer on the GD roster. But that's really nitpicking, your argument in principle is correct. I think there are operational differences and big ones. Neither side is banking on a breakthrough, entering operational space and exploiting. Here it's more about inconvencing the enemy to the point they no longer wish to wage war, as neither side is able to achieve a large scale operational breakthrough. Actually I am already afraid of the consequences this war will have on Russia regardless of how the ground war plays out. Winding down the war production, removing all the benefits for soldiers, getting their market going and finally answering the question "so what was it all for anyway?" will send ripples. Putin is waging this war on time borrowed from his people and once it's time to cash out, there will be trouble for decades to come. I would recommend waiting with that house, Russia is not going to be a safe place once this is all over.

This is a most over-played concern. We are talking about a well-planned operation that has the logistical train in mind from Day1 - unlike the RU initial invasion which simply envisaged success in 48hrs with no logisitical requirement thereof. Out-running supply trains means outpoacing the 24hr two-way distance of the truck fleet. UA is a long, long way from that. Especially as the centre of the axis is a main A-road. If they can keep local air-superiority then it's not going to be a problem at all.

I'm sure that Ukraine doesn't want a nuclear disaster only 100km or so from Sumy. Even Kyiv isn't that far away. They'll use it as a bargaining chip to force Russia to allow the International Atomic Commission access to ZNPP, inspect that everything is operation-worthy and boot it up again. Ukraine BADLY needs ZNPP to produce power, as their grid is damaged and has problems transferring energy from Europe all the way to the eastern parts. None of which, apart from de-stabilising VVP, are likely to end the war (but what campaign ever does?) themselves however, in aggregrate they take UA closer to winning it. Especially in comparison to grinding battles in the Donbas which aren't at all militarily or politically releveant. Especially if one thinks Trump would force peace talks on UA that would cede the Donbas to RU. Why on Earth now then fight to the death over hamlets there that have to be given to RU gratis under Trump's "peace plan". That makes zero sense. It seems this Ukrainian operation has been very well planned, and has in place a sustainability that other like incursions never showed. The size of seized territory vs the rate taken is stunning. I wonder if Ukraine is not really interested in claiming the nuclear power plant yet but use it as a goal so to attract Russian forces to the area from the front lines. If Russia does not take the incursion seriously or decides to not send in more than a token force to stop them maybe Ukraine can reach it and use it as a bargaining chip, whatever there goals are they I am sure have there plans to achiever them. Supply lines are important for ammunition, but once organised and relatively safe caches are built up, i see Ukraine advancing fast again to capture the plant and surrounding areas. These defensive lines will become very useful to Ukraine if they can capture them once fully completed.

Exactly. RU has to defend it or else UA will simply walk in and shut it off (As a bargaining chip to get elctricity from ZPP). And to stop this whilst RU could use conscripts it won't as they would get whipped by UA. So it has to bring back quality contract soldiers from Donbas to secure the NPP and environs. Just threatening it is sufficient from the UA side. But this is the beauty of this move compared to defending meaningless acres of Donbas (steppe) as there are so many high-value targets of opportunity/benefit in Kursk Oblast: the gas infrastruture, the railway lines, iron mines, the power lines, the sugar crop, the Kursk defence industries, incursions into Belgorod and Bryansk oblast, the shortening of defensive UA border frontiers and lines etc etc ... All these things open up in this move when there simply aren't comparables in the industrial wastelands of the Donbas. And that is before one considers all the massive political headaches it is causing VPP and the Kremlin.

Classic Blitzkrieg is to go where the enemy isn't, exploit gaps or seams in the defense and bypass resistance. Eventually, you have to curl around and cut off the remaining front-line resistance, but they know that too, so the threat that they might be cut off can induce a retreat, as we saw in the offensive east of Kharkov in autumn of 2022. All of this requires that the attacker move and make decisions faster than the defender, AND have reserves to bring up to defend the flanks of the penetration and surround the centers of resistance that are now in the attacker's rear. That's why the Ukrainian high command is so silent about what's going on: Blitzkrieg depends on the enemy's not knowing your progress and finding out that he is surrounded when it is too late to pull out. After the Ukrainian offensive culminates, the front lines stabilize, and everyone knows where everyone is, we'll find out what actually happened.

RU propaganda is saying it is PL troops along with UA. Free RU forces are a major political headache. As was Vaslov to Stalin. So this is the last thing they will ever be saying publicly. Except when they have "crushed them" [ahem from a propaganda POV]. The GE forces are relevant but not a boggyman in the eyes of RU propagandists. There is more leverage from PL as a ghost of the past invading this way in 1920s... Saying it was NATO would up the stakes far, far too much. As then VVP would really have to appear to be acting in defence of the state. Frankly, no-one wants that as it does rather imply going nuclear. So, despite it being "NATO"-type equipment in play it is smart of the RU propagandists to keep the rhetoric more moderated. Obvs RU have to invoke an outside force in the invasion as obvs by themselves the UA would not be able to invade big-brother RU. Hence the invocation of others to salve the RU conscience about being invaded by the smaller, formerly allied state! There will be no sleep in the Kremlin and associated bunkers. VVP will be getting a real insight into Hitler's psychological problems now...
