Thanks I will. I'm an old man with a new toy. All this new music. Maybe I'll live to 143.

Yet another sadly-neglected composer. Facinating music. Thanks for sharing it.

That's sadly true, my dream is to "see" this symphony (or the cello concerto) played in a concert hall, but most of musicians don't even know him.

I found it quite by accident . I have listened I don't no how many times. The finale is one of the most beautiful I have heard. On KZbin it has introduced other composers that I have never heard of.

May not be up there with Stenhammar's amazing 2nd symphony but you can't deny the professionalism and colorful orchestration of this symphony - deserves to be heard more often I feel.

Yes, I agree that the Stenhammar Number 2 is a masterpiece. There is a video recording directed by Herbert Blomstedt that I find wonderful.

Has one of the most poetic openings of any symphony known to me. Well chosen and atmospheric picture image to accompany the music. Thanks for posting.

I am quite sure that it is the recording Sixten Ehrling performed with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra on the 21/22. December 1982 in the Stockholm Concert Hall...an overwhelming rendition!!!

It is up to Stenhammer indeed! Comparisons are needless. The section starting at 23:55 has to be one of the more hauntingly beautiful moments in late romantic music! It brings tears!

This could be dubbed the "Heroic" or "Victory" Symphony, wherein the protagonist trudges on in a hopeless resignation through sunlight and storms, with a veil over any perceived beauty, until, at last, the veil is lifted (at 28:03), and the clouds disappear in a revelatory vision of fulfillment. It's a great work, and if it seems somewhat labored, that only indicates an identification with the plights of the subject.

I find this an intermittently great symphony. When Atterberg goes in full swing, he is IMO quite the equal of Sibelius and Nielsen (I've no real opinion on Stenhammar). There are many moments of searing beauty and conviction. But along the way there are also some dead patches, or at least places where he seems not sure where to go. Here is where he falls short of his colleagues who have no problem maintaining the tension and argument. Nonetheless, Atterberg is a composer who should be much more appreciated and played. Thanks for uploading.

calling a composer the "equal" of Carl Nielson is damning w faint praise. Atterberg's 2nd, 3rd, and 5th symphonies are far better than any of Nielson's ugly concatenations of noise.
