I actually knew her a little bit when I lived in Boston- I would see her playing on the subway platforms (most often on the Red Line, at Park Street) and in Harvard Square on Friday and Saturday nights. My friend Kevin had a crush on her. We were not close friends, but we were friendly, and would chat here and there. If anyone is questioning whether Mary Lou is putting on an act here, she isn't. Hello anyone reading. There was MUCH more to this interview than just this short piece. I hope that someday they release the whole thing because it was the only time I actually ever told this story with anyone. (ON camera, anyway)..... I talked about the loss of my dear friend Elliott Smith (who was a little brother to me, and how I looked out for him, and how we shared time on the road, and our friendsip.....), Elliott also passed away....And I talked about the fact that, if Kurt had the chance to have met Elliott (the window of time between them meeting each other was tiny) -Maybe 5 months. Kurt would have adored Elliott. If they had gotten the chance to meet, I honestly think they would have made music together, and quite possibly, saved each other's lives through the love of music, and what they could have balanced out, and given each other. But alas, it never happened. But my God, I SO wish Kurt had hung on long enough to have met, befriended, and ultimately made music with Elliott. In the "extended" interview (that you do NOT see here), I told that story as well. Elliott was in Portland after finishing College at Hampshire, and Kurt died just a couple months before. Man, if they had ONLY gotten the chance to meet. It should have happened, and it would have been amazing for both of them. For Kurt to find Elliott. It quite possibly could have saved him. Just saying. Someday I hope this entire interview (not just THIS clip) will be shown. There was SOOO much more to it, and so much more I said about those first few months of Nirvana's breaking, etc.......anyway, It meant a lot to me, and I THOUGHT they were going to run the whole story about everything I said. But, they cut is short. ANyway.....In my mind, Kurt and Elliott are together and finally met. I miss them both SO very much.

Hey, Mary, thank you for sharing all of this. I'm sorry they disregarded so much of the interview. These large corporate media houses are awful, especially when it comes to deeply human things such as these. I highly recommend you reach out to Daniel Sarkissian here on KZbin for an interview and an opportunity to speak about these things for posterity. He does a ton of Nirvana related interviews with people who knew and worked with the band, and I'm certain he would be thrilled to hear your stories about Kurt and Elliot. Most importantly, he wouldn't cut any of the interview out. Just something to consider. I think it's important for these stories to be told in full, and I would love to hear the details of what you've outlined here.

Tracy Marander was the most important of Kurt's ex-girlfriends because she was the one who was behind his creative genius by giving him some emotional security and financial support for about 2 years that allowed him to concentrate ONLY on his music and have the freedom to write almost all of the songs from Bleach, Incesticide and part of Nevermind during the period they were together as a couple (Kurt lived at her house for a time where he also did some paintings and artwork)!
It's a shame he didn't end up with Mary Lou, instead of Courtney Love. Maybe he'd have never become a heroin addict and maybe he'd still be alive as well.

Wow what could've been. Kurt met Courtney at a Portland show. He himself said he had never met anyone so outspoken and charismatic. He loved the excitement she brought to their relationship. Courtney was like a version of him he could never bring himself to be. He was more shy and introverted. That's probably why he was so attracted to her more than any other chick in that era. Their drug abuse brought them closer together unfortunately, but even with Frances and his rise to fame, he couldn't handle it. It's such a shame to see someone like that go. We have lost too many people to addiction and suicide. It's not fair for people to blame Courtney for his death when he was an adult that made his own decisions. She tried to help him even when she was battling with her own addictions. For their marriage, Frances, and the band. Because he wanted to end it all. And he did. Tragically.

Music is not dead. Your mind is. Kurt was all about expressionism, no matter how it's done. Maybe in a perfect world you get rid of modern music. And all bands/music sound how you want them to sound then what would that be? That would get boring and bland real quick. Learn to be more open minded. Just imagine how your parents felt when they first heard you listen to Nirvana. That's why this generation is annoyed by "old heads" you guys still have your bitter 90's cynicism in uuuuuu

Their story is a very interesting case of what could have been. What if she did go to the Chicago gig? Kurt begged her to go but she didn't bec she was afraid to lose her job and didn't want to impose on the band for expenses. That was the same night Courtney went to Chicago for Billy Corgan but they had a fight and got thrown out of the apartment. Courtney then went to the Nirvana gig where she pursued Kurt and that was the first time they hooked up. What an incredible chain of events. One decision could have changed history as we know it.
