I was watching World Idol on or around New Years when I heard someone start to sing that was incredibly talented. I remember calling in my wife and parents into the living room and all of us were amazed. I followed him for awhile afterwards and he seemed to do pretty well for his geographical area. It was great seeing Kelly Clarkson's reaction when she lost. She probably thought being from the U.S, as am I, that she would "walk it".

It still makes me angry that two of the judges go on about him sounding like Bono; he sounds NOTHING like Bono, and even as a fan of U2, I had never liked that song until Kurt sang it.

+Romy Shinra The control Kurt had at all ranges of that song along with a hint of his Norwegian accent is what seperated Nilson from Bono's. Is Kurt going to out vocal or out perform Bono over a course of an entire set, of course not, but on this night on this stage he did exactly what the Norwegian judge said, "He made Norway proud." And you can't ask for more than that. I also agree with the comment below. Was no reason for Simon to chop him down to build him up. This wasn't a beauty contest.

I remember this like it was last week, I was watching this with my sister and my mom. The performance was great but I called Kurt as the winner when I saw his relaxed attitude between the performances. Kelly Clarcson, the woman who was supposed to win this if we ever were going to have world idol again, seemed stuck up. Kurt seemed down to earth and relaxed like he was just having a laugh. It was indeed a very Beautiful Day when I first heard this song and Kurt!! I still remember it clearly, an unusual star was born! Perfect voice control, which isn't exactly easy in this difficult song. Some judges really recognized that talent.Rock on Kurt, and dont let no stupid prejudice and ideas about looks etc stop you from reaching your goals

I think the judges learned from this first year that you can't pick a pop star on looks. But they are incredibly rude-hard to believe you could say that to someone, especially on tv in front of millions. Kurt has a stunning voice, and I've been watching all of his videos on KZbin since I first heard him. I'm happy that no one listened to the judges, most of all Kurt.

I get Simon's point, and it's very true. (Not that Kurt is ugly, I personally think he's adorable.). But that it's so much easier for (typically) good-looking people to get record contracts and millions of crazed fans. Kurt Nielsen var helt klart et fenomen, en musikalsk Solskjær. Men etter noen år hvor Kurtèrn som en klar favoritt av radiosangene så har det ebbet ut. Det var helt topp å høre han her nå. Bøllen Simon var mye mindre urettferdig og stygg mot Kurt Nielsen enn hva eg husk - Toji`s sang Stay i eurovision 2011 hadde mest fytt og tempo og absolute en konkurent til Loreèn sang. I watched World Idol back then & I was wrapped that Kurt won. He has an amazing voice. Kyle & Simon was harsh on his looks & he ain't bad looking at all. Brenda - I always found Leonard Cohen to be very good looking. To each their own! :) He was also very humble. Here in Canada, we have the Juno Awards and when Cohen won best male vocalist he laughed and graciously said something like "Only in a Canada could I get male vocalist of the year." However, when it came to raw emotion, painfully beautiful poetry, and the honest deliverance of a song, no one could hold a candle to him.

The thing is that when the Norwegian judges made him such an underdog by those comments they made the Norwegian people determined to prove them wrong. Kurt had sold fewer records if it weren`t for those comments. So the irony is that if the judges hadn`t said it out loud they may would`ve been right (or at least "righter"). Simon Cowell did just that too. Don`t get me wrong, with a voice like that Kurt probably would`ve sold records anyway, but i definately think the comments helped him.

I remember watching this World Idol 2004 audition years ago, and there was absolutely no doubt whatsoever, that Kurt Nilsen had the best voice in the whole competition. I was so happy that he won.........and yes, he sounds BETTER than BONO! The judges' comments about his appearance were very negative........he is not ugly, he is just a normal looking Norwegian guy, and in the end, it's TALENT that takes you places!!
