Believe it or not that's all from improper Kumi Kata. I can tell by the way he tapes his fingers he never trained in proper gripping techniques. Kurt is nevertheless an outstanding champion!

Nice sequence. Although, I'm not a fan of how tani otoshi is taught in BJJ. The misconception is that it's some kind of backwards trip, but in reality a proper one uses the backwards momentum from falling back to leverage the throw.

I'm starting to work with throws now (white belt here), and I confess I'm a little overwhelmed. I understand not every throw is for everyone, and you have to find what suits your body type, strength, etc. I notice throwing guy is taller than Kurt, could you post some example showing the "thrower" being smaller than the "throwee", please? I will still experiment with these today, though. Thank you for the video!

Once you grab behind the opponent, a great Judo guy would instantly go for the hip toss. It's just instinct to us. Great move, but I wouldn't risk it.

Yes, but hopefully you've broken the other guy's posture so he can't. Every throw can be countered, the trick is to make sure your opponent's momentum and posture are already doing what you want him to do. Or better, do what his momentum and posture want *you* to do.
