Kurt Russell was an established, highly paid actor and Harrison Ford was a relatively unknown actor. I'm sure Kurt would have done a fantastic job, but I think it was all about economics. Harrison was cheaper than Kurt. In the end, Harrison was the best choice as he wasn't really known for that much and could really become the character.
@emilyanderson63916 жыл бұрын
Spot on. George Lucas had ulterior motives in his casting. First of all he was well aware that he was a relative newcomer as a director and neither had to experience nor the status to go against established actors. He knew that established actors would be more difficult to work with since they could just threat to quit if they didn't get their way or ridicule him for his lack of experience directing. Choosing unknowns would make them a lot easier to work with - though even Hamill, Ford and Fisher *all* complained to George Lucas the dialogue was clunky and virtually impossible to say. Like you said they were cheaper too and since the movie was going to be seriously expensive ($11 million was big budget back in 1977) hiring cheap actors meant all money could be poured into the production of the movie. Fact is the only actor that demanded a "special contract" for Star Wars was Sir Alec Guinness. His contract stipulated he could earn a certain fixed percent of the movies total box office income and he also managed to get George Lucas to kill off his career in the first movie. Originally Lucas had intended to keep Obi-Wan as Luke's mentor in all three movies. Ford, Hamill and Fisher certainly didn't have the power to make such demands and they were well aware they were easily replaceable should Lucas find them "difficult to work with". Another factor that decided Harrison Ford landed the role. Originally he was just hired to read the roles against the other actors being considered for Luke and Leia. Eventually he had read the lines so many times he essentially "became the part" and since Lucas had seen him "grow into the role" with his reading he decided Ford was surprisingly good as Han Solo and cast him. It was never Lucas's plan from the very beginning but suddenly dawned on him. On top of that Harrison Ford was easy to work with, always assisted with the carpentry on the sets and was generally highly adaptable to any changes. As such all those factors contributed to Ford being signed to the role.
@moviesgalore99473 жыл бұрын
@@emilyanderson6391 Yep he was making good money as a carpenter to the stars and producers he was really good its why Indy says "the cup of a carpenter" in the cave at the end of Last Crusade that was an inside joke about the Holy Grail being a simple "cup of a carpenter" which is what Christ was. And for Alec Guiness he did the movie because he needed the money at the time he was very low on money so he did Obi Wan for the easy money but he brought so much greatness to the part it was crazy lucky George got Guiness to play Obi Wan.
@RobotRebelCinema3 жыл бұрын

@cocodakilla8 жыл бұрын
Not so many people actually! Fisher could not cope with fame and became depressed. Do you not know this? Hamill had an accident and I really do not know why he did not get more roles! BTW Ford married the ET writer who was far more talented than he. Obvious how he used her for connections ! Because then his acting went downhill when he traded her in for gold diggers. Oh and he is not one of the biggest stars. Indiana is a big iconic character but Stephen should be praised for that.. And the writers. Because ANYONE could have done indiana. Sean Connery is an icon. He has charisma and something which you can see and tell it is him. Hamill is now getting into voice acting. Ford became a flop actor after the big indiana hit. And now he should really retire because he seems FAR older than he really is. Arrogant man who has used many people.

I am glad to see this little piece of history. Personally, I think Russell is a terrific actor, but so is Harrison Ford. I do think Harrison is more subtle, however, and did not overshadow Luke or Obijuan, which made that original film so memorable. Back in 1977 nobody knew much of Harrison Ford, or the other actors in the show, which made its impressive story so much more visible. Hiring top of he line actors would probably have distracted too much, methinks. Russell has had a fine career.

+AcceptYourDeath Russel had more swagger later in his career. He could have made a good Han Solo had he been directed to bring that out. Harrison Ford on other hand, clearly brought that with him to all the audition readings he performed. He created the character to the dialogue and perhaps that is what was realized when he was selected?
@AcceptYourDeath9 жыл бұрын
1400IntruderVS For me personally Harrison Fords stature at this time, being this tall and slim guy is a big part of what makes this character one of the best in history. The second you see him appear you buy the story of a sleek, selfish, clever survivalist in the galaxies He always looks somewhat weak without much physical strength but relying on outsmarting everybody, which is pretty much the character he plays as we all know.
@1400IntruderVS8 жыл бұрын
AcceptYourDeath Han Solo was also the anti-hero of A New Hope. He was cunning and resourceful as well as ruthless when necessary. Which is why the re edit of the scene where he kills Greedo is probably the worst decision Lucas made when re-releasing the original trilogy in the late 1990s. The original movie introduced his character as some one who is not trust worthy and may be dangerous when cornered. His interest in getting payed above all reasons isn't brushed over lightly. The character's story has a redemption arc, which makes him that much cooler.

I like Kurt, but Harrison Ford WAS Han Solo...:) Perfectly cast for Han. He nailed it - slick, 'me-first', but in the end, heroic.
@kungfooligan14 жыл бұрын
If you want to see Kurt as Han Solo, just watch Big Trouble in Little China. Jack Burton certainly carries the torch pretty well.

Spot on and he played super fantastic as snake in (Escape from New York). IF KURT DID GET TO BE HAN SOLO, WE WOULD HAVE LOVED IT JUST AS MUCH.

Russel was too expensive those days, he was a star already. Lucas has so little money for actors, so he used to choose the cheapest ones.

Ironically, Star Wars ended up at Disney. He already did GotG2 which was a Disney/MCU movie. Who knows? Kurt might end up being on a Star Wars show down the road.

Who was more expensive in that moment?. I think Ford was cheaper and resulted an excellent Hans Solo.

I'm not sure how I feel about his audition, but there's something oddly satisfying about it
@metalmorgan10 жыл бұрын
Harrison's audition is MILES better than Russel's
@WishItWas198413 жыл бұрын
@VultureLives The auditions were from the 3rd draft. I believe it got to a revised 4th draft before shooting (at the least). The Huycks were hired to write snappy one-liners and do an overall polish of the final script. They didn't do massive edits or chop off verbose dialogue. What they added was important, but subtle. They deserve credit, but the vast majority of the words on the screen are from Lucas. Which is why he is the sole credited writer of the movie.

He definitely could have been Han Solo, EASILY

It certainly seems a complicated business to do the right casting, have a good script, good producing and good editing. Ford has been good for some roles and seriously miscast for others. We can certainly enjoy some of both actors work.

Kurt Russell wouldn't have made a good Han Solo. Neither would have the other guy have made a good luke...
@kamdan20113 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t have worked if Luke and Han were the same age.

Harrison Ford was made for Han Solo

Yes but Kurt would have made a good one too

Kurt would have been amazing in that part along with all the other actors that were lined up.

Harrison Ford is better than him!!! more expressive than Kurt!!
@jpowell18010 жыл бұрын
Not really. Ford is really underwhelming in the role, like he was just phoning it in - he really wasn't too thrilled to be there. Russell, otoh, had it played the roll like Jack Burton, would have ruled!
@TrOllinM4sTEr10 жыл бұрын
jpowell180 I agree. if anything cost Kurt the part was the fact that his face is too young looking. Kurt Russell still looks very young for his age. always has. Kurt's audition>Harrison's
@okitasan16 жыл бұрын
I agree. I'm sure if they all got the rolls and we were watching auditions with Ford and Hamill, we'd probably be saying the same thing about them
@Englishdosser8616 жыл бұрын
I like Kurt Russell, and he was AWESOME in Big Trouble in Little China. But this is definately a cut below Hamil and Ford's audition.

@Jaderlif Lucas wrote the script by himself for A New Hope. They are auditioning w/ a chunk of one of the rough drafts.

solid actor. fascinating

Kurt Russel sounds here like Luke who spent too much time with Han. That would have been such a nice spin off. Imagine him calling anybody "kid" at that age. Also, the Luke person is wonderfully silly.

He's a kick ass actor, he would've made a great Han Solo

I wished he had had the role. But I'm no Harrison Ford fan generally but some of his films are really great. So now that you've read my post it surely changed your whole life and made you a great deal smarter right?

I see someone posted that Used Cars is one of the best movies of the 20th Century. I would say that he is pretty much correct. I saw that movie twice in the theater and it was hilarious. Kurt did a great job.
