Hi Kurt. I like your short, step by step, clearly articulated vids. I am picking up my "new" old 1971 Z on the 27th of Jan in New Mexico. Not that I need to rebuild the engine in it or anything yet, but it's been a few years since I did any motor work, and your videos and approach remind me of how much I enjoy that kind of thing and I'm kind of looking forward to the opportunity to do it myself again someday! Thanks for the vids. Outstanding!

One thing I did was remove the oil filter bypass ball and spring and plug the passage, insuring all oil goes through the filter. And put a k&n filter on it. Also you can prime the whole system with a drill, remove oil pump drive spindle ,put the pump back on and get a long flat wood drill bit ,file it down dull chuck it in a drill and set it to reverse. Be sure to hold the drill with both hands so when the pressure hits it won't spin out of your hand. I love Z-cars!

+Mark Robinson interesting idea on the bypass ball delete. Curious what you used to plug it. In regards to priming, yes in a later video did just that, worked awesome! Thanks for watching!

If at all possible, when installing oil seals use an arbor press. In a pinch a drill press works as well. The seal will go straight in. Plus it will be square to the centerline of the seal bore. 45+ years rebuilding industrial machinery. One note on stainless steel screws. Stainless screws are not stronger than carbon steel screws. My last 12 years before I retired I was employed rebuilding industrial centrifuges for waste treatment plants. Stainless screws have a lower torque rating than carbon steel. Stainless in this case is fine for non structural applications. 2) When installing something like this front cover or any other part where you have a gasket that must be kept in alignment. Take a couple of long screws and cut the heads off. Use a cut-off wheel in a Dremel or die grinder to cut a cross slot across the top of the screw. The screws will hold the gasket in place while you slip the part over the screws. Put two screws in and use a screw driver to remove the guide studs.

When using Anti-Sieze on stainless use food grade. It's no where near as messy. And always use anti-sieze on stainless. Dealing with galled threads at a future point is not fun.

These videos are excellent. Just one suggestion, if instead of cutting music entirely when you're speaking, you just faded the volume down a bit to be background noise while you speak. It would make the transition back to the time-lapse or montage sections where the music comes back much less jarring. Also the little bit of background music just makes even the speaking portions of the video sound nice. Also, as a side note, I heard you refer to the belt pulley as a harmonic balancer. I think almost all engines of the l28's era are externally balanced, but the l28 is a bit of an exception. The inline six doesn't have a lot of the harmonic issues that v engines and i4s have, and the rotating assemblies are balanced internally, (if you look, the counter weights on your crank will have been drilled at the factory to remove mass and balance the assembly). So where as you don't want to toss any balancer or flywheel onto most v8's of that era (since they're matched to a specific rotating assembly at the factory to bring the whole deal into balance), the flywheels and pulleys are swappable between L-series engines, as all of those individual parts are neutrally balanced. Long story short, that's just a pulley my man, no balancing happening there. Keep up the great videos, and your choice of background music is on point, super relaxing.
@CarsBikesandCoffee

Thanks so much for your feedback! I will make that change for the next video. Let me know of any other suggestions, as I appreciate it. Good info on the pulley, thanks for that too. You are correct all of he Datsun L engines are internally balanced. Crazy too as my crankshaft being as old as it is was close to original spec! Crazy! Thanks for watching!!
