Continuing on with our college study ball series, I'm gonna jump into Caleb Williams today. Now, I'll be the first one to say that I didn't feel like the system helped him out a great deal in the tape that I watched. It didn't feel like the playmakers around him were necessarily as good there as he's had in the past. So we're gonna take a look at one of his games from this year against Washington. Take a look at the good, the bad, each and every pass play like I did last week with my son. We'll come back and play these as we get closer to the draft. So there'll be one a week on these different guys so you can compare them all, and then we'll put them all together before the draft is, we're leading up to it, so you can kind of binge-watch all of them and see where we're at. But let's go ahead and dive into the tape right now. #calebwilliams #nfldraft #nfl

Watching these breakdowns not only gives me some insight on qb play, but also on offensive or passing game coordinators. If I was looking to hire an offensive coordinator in the nfl, I'd consult with Kurt for his evaluations of coaches from a play design, concept & scheme perspective.

Dude throws into triple coverage and got rolled by KC. He's has some great games but no where close to elite at passing. He only has 6 300 yard games in 6 seasons Herbert has 27 in 4 season. The Fields trade made sense, but this does not mean that the Bears are for sure pulling the trigger on Caleb....trading down to Washington would net a massive trove of picks now and future, go after Marvin Harrisonjr and take one of the other 5 great QB's left at 9. With MHjr, Allen and Moore at WR bears now become a top prospect for ANY free agent qb in the next several years, they dont need to take a chance on caleb being a bust a wasting a #1 overall....also Williams has shown nothing that separates his talents from a pack of talented QB prospects.

just wait until he gets to see the plays the bears draw up for him behind that joke of a line they got. still no center. two injury prone guards. LT is at best the 26th best LT in the league. and without fields, the run game is about to be mid, especially behind that joke of a line. by week 3 when jenkins and davis are both hurt already, and they are already in scramble mode upfront, hes gonna be wishing he was still at USC, or that he wasnt so concerned about giving people more reason to dislike him. and he just forced his way out of the bears drafting him.

@@PeteZam And yet most Justin Fields cultists believe that drafting MHJ is the way to go… Boy you guys have made every excuse possible for why JF has failed except for the wind blowing in the wrong direction 🙄… Have you ever thought that maybe the reason Justin Fields running as much as he does is because he is a slow reader and doesn’t pull the trigger even when his receivers are open?? Or maybe because he refuses to throw the ball down the middle of the field?? Or that he is THE SLOWEST drop back from under center?? Compare that with the SLOWEST release in the NFL because he throws like shortstop in baseball and you combine those things with slow reader and you get a QB who runs more then he throws 🤦‍♂️… And yes the Bears had their issues at The Offensive line and play calling but yall act that JF has no flaws at all 🤨

People were saying the same things about Patrick Mahomes, which is why he was drafted so low at 10th. The fact is nobody really knows how a guy will play at the NFL level until they have played for at least a year, if not 2 years. Some of the best QB's to ever play the game had terrible 1st years in the NFL, and they went on to be great and get into the hall of fame. When you draft any QB it's a coin flip if they will be great in the NFL or not, so you get who you want, and hope they are great.

Imo I believe Poles is way past a coin flip odds QB evaluation. I believe he has studied relentlessly the latest evolving intelligence on exactly what to look for. He wants a guy whos mentally tough beyond the norm, money means much less to them over winning, their standard of putting in work is much higher than the norm. They can take criticism in a productive way, seeing the big picture in everything, refusing to see factors with finality as their thought process is always putting even unknown outside factors in to create more clarity. A player whos true happiness as a person is mostly predicated on getting better at football much more than the norm, will have a deeply embedded thought process with a ridiculous amount of layers to have a ruthless life or death thinking that they would kill themselves in a second if they made millions at their position and didn't have everything down in terms of what the coaches want down to the tiniest detail. There's a lot to it and ways to find this stuff out. The real problem is guys who fit most of this criteria along with having special physical and mental tools is rare. Some times coaches have a gauge on the riak level for qbs to a higher degree but have limited options, all week see is the surface so just assume it's just pick and see what happens

It's the air raid offense. Lincoln Riley special. How will this transfer to the NFL? Dont see RB reps, TEs or long balls requiring touch. And he could have taken a lot of sacks where the other team like didn't even tackle him. He drops back and doesn't set his feet on occasion, he doesn't run for first downs. And he's 6 ft tall. Makes zero sense. Play calls are pick right or left and he didn't even consistently pick right against mostly mid defenses. Yikes

Thanks Kurt!! I always love your analyses. Question re: the play at 25:40, shouldn’t he have recognized the number and leverage advantage his receivers had on his left? Seems to me USC had a built in 2 on 1 advantage and, if that didn’t work out, there’s no way the linebacker or a drop edge could cover the quick out. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think so.

You generally don't need to worry about sticking to the progression if you can read pre-snap, many times it comes down to watching one defender break and then throwing it away from him. If your WR is running a go route, and your TE (or slot) runs a post over the middle, most of the time all you're doing is reading one safety.

Why don't we don't see much progression (feet & eyes processing by Caleb 1 to 2 to 3). If we ask - why is Caleb throwing so many short passes and off schedule? My assessment would be that very poor pass blocking by USC Offensive line was getting beat constantly and demanded those two responses by Caleb. Offensive Line is left with throw it now or scramble plays. Do you agree Off schedule or dump off is product of offensive line. Its one game but it was a constant problem.

Can we all admit that Lincoln Riley is really good at finding and recruiting very talented QBs but is a terrible coach that eventually ends up being what holds his teams back? He just calls some made up plays like he’s playing a version of Madden where you design your own route concepts and he just puts them in a randomizer and goes with what it tells him? No rhyme or reason for what he’s doing. He is great at finding talented QBs and riding on their coat tails as far as they can take him. That’s the extent of it. He literally can’t even buy a competent defense with USCs massive booster funded NIL collective and his entire Rolodex of defensive coaches. At Oklahoma he had a small excuse, you couldn’t pay players. He could literally afford the best team in the country with USCs boosters. Still can’t put a defense together that can hold a high school team below 40 points, for 2 years in a row.

Dude, the reason we don't need to watch Justin film is because we watched it for the last three years. There's a reason it's 99.99 percent consensus the Bears should move off of Fields. He doesn't read a defense well, he doesn't throw to open receivers WITHIN HIS PROGRESSIONS, doesn't throw with anticipation, at times can be inaccurate, has some of the worst QB stats in the league, is injury prone, fumbles a lot, his dropback is slow, his release is slow, he has the highest TTT in the NFL by a country mile, and if all of that is not enough... we have to pay him a LOT of money soon... 1.There isn't a flat route run on this play. 2. #8 Is USC's safety, so I don't think he is on the field.

@@92Vreid88 then whatever the number, the read here is slot, which is what CW is looking at...the defense sees it so the left side of the field is 3 v 2, the outlet is the delay route.. Are we really going to be pendantic about the number what is is it 6 instead of 8 or whartever...The RB/WR or whoever, blocks for a second and releases...thats WHY the guy seemingly ran free.... CW held the ball too long looking for the big play splitting the safety's... which was covered, obviously from the start when they droppped the LB into the hook zone. I can go back and find the exact number and exact player, but if you don't see the very basic release on this play, as his out.... I don't know what to say to you other than learn more

Im just not sold on this guy at all. I have lost count of how many 'athletic' qb's were going to be the answer, but they cant do more than one read. I need to see him progress through reads, against NFL defenses, before I can buy in. I also have major questions about the mental and personality side of Caleb. He seems overly confident so I wonder how he will react to adversity. I dont think he will be a bust or anything extreme, but I find myself not seeing the supposed massive gap between Williams and Daniels/McCarthy.

Not a QB - should there be any concern with Caleb Williams lack of experience with being under center? That would obviously effect the physicality of a play, but is there a concern re: reading a defense? Calling an audible to a better play?

Nice to see a thorough breakdown like this one. I'm no QB expert, but Williams seems like his floor is a better Zach Wilson, and ceiling is Tyrod Taylor (minus the injuries). So a bust, but only because the expectations are ridiculous and he won't be able to meet them.

If he's smart he won't. Bears may not get an opportunity like this again. The biggest difference between 1985 and 2005 teams was the franchise QB was covered in 1985. If the Bears had Drew Brees on that team in 2005 do you think they lose in the Superbowl? Not a chance that they lose. Williams gives the Bears an actual shot to win a Superbowl. JF will be gone from the team due to payroll hit in two years at the most.

Not impressed by his ability to see thru the progressions. I think the great QBs have a sense of where to go for the open receiver before the play unfolds just by where the Defense lines up. Like Curt says he doesn't see it ! This was USC's Biggest Conference game of the year & special QB is missing here. Generational ? Statue outside the new stadium ? Stop giving yourself accolades without taking a Pro snap. What I liked about JF was his head down get to work. No HYPE BS like CW !
